JCW GP Photography

With all the excitement over MTTS and the release of the US GPs, there really hasn’t been many decent pictures (with the exception of TC & ed100′s) of the car out in the wild. However with the MTTS caravan passing through southern California, Dave Bunting (of Motoringphotography.com fame & frequent MF contributor) had a chance to spend some quality time with Todd’s GP. The results are simply the best photos we’ve seen yet of the car. Have a look:

What is the reddish thing on the driver’s side airdam a bit lower than the fog lights? Is it a JCW emblem?

  • Lee L

When is that David Bunting going to learn how to take a good picture!? ;-)

already upset i wasn’t able to buy one so these pics are just piling on. maybe a “lightly” used one a few years down the road.

  • Dave

I just want to thank Todd for his help in making these photos.

    Yes

So, in image 3, how did you get so much motion at the back of the car and very little on the front? Was the GP going over a bump or are you working the camera to do that while keeping everything in the shot together?

I really like that one as it tends to convey the motion really well.

beautiful pictures as always, Dave. However, I can’t decide if I should be inspired or if I should just hang up my camera. ;-)

    Lee,

number 3 is just a basic pan with the shutterspeed dragged out.

I place the focus point on the front of the car and then pan with that. The back end is following a slightly different trajectory over that same time period, so it gets a bit blurred, since its arc with respect to the lens isn’t quite the same as the arc the front of the car is following.

Here’s another example with the same end effect from the BSSP Ad Agency Drive

The pan with more blur (the one in the center – number 5 or 6 depending on how you count), had a longer shutterspeed, so both the front and back ends wound up showing more movement.

beautiful pictures as always, Dave. However, I can’t decide if I should be inspired or if I should just hang up my camera. ;-)

Thanks, that’s very kind. You’re far from needing to hang up your camera though.

I saw a 5 of these in “person,” and they were awesome, but didn’t look nearly as good as this!

  • http://www.showcargarage.com Richard Lin

Really nice shots as always Dave!

  • Frank

Nice ride Todd! Enjoy it, you really deserve it after a very long wait!

  • Dave

Looking at the photos of Todd’s GP again, I just noticed that the U.S. GP’s didn’t get the rear windows tinted.

  • Mario

    Good job Dave!

    Cheers, Mario

These are the best shots of the GP I’ve seen, and after following and leading a couple of ‘em on MTTS, these capture the real look of the car, something I was missing in the other shots of GPs. The GP, more than other MINIs, has to be seen in the flesh, so to speak, to appreciate it, IMO, but now these shots come awful damn close. Great pictures, Dave!

Dave, I have been privledged to see you work up close (AMVIV 2006 photo shoot) and I hope to see you work again, this time shooting my new GP coming in September. Perhaps a dual shoot with the MJO MINI and the GP!

Juan Calderon (blu iguana), a very fine photographer whom I’ve admired for some time, has some beautiful artistic photos of the GP: http://www.blu-iguana.us/archives/000840.html
