Nothing new to most MF readers but MINI USA officially rolled out JCW pricing at the NYC auto show. Including destination the JCW coupe will start at $29,200. The Clubman will be priced a little more at $31,450. This is the same preliminary pricing we had reported last month but this time it includes the $650 destination fee.
Target date for the North America configurator web site?
CHA CHING!
What are the unique styling bits that are referred as being included in the base model? (Leftlane News)
Extortion.
$30K…
Woj, mis-information from Mini since they insist to only show the R56 in a fully optioned state. Really looking forward to the reviews that start coming out when a writers see that their original stories where well off the mark.
Just a part of the confusion that a great number of automotive writers are having problems with. The only bits that are unique to this visually is the Borbet wheels, 4 pot front brakes, new jcw logo, a higher speed speedo.
Ever happier with my GP 🙂
I thought it would be much more than expensive. People who say that this is extortion… get over it because MINI’s are expensive to begin with for such a small car.
Ok. If not extortion, then rape.
Well, I paid about $36-$37k for my MINI… I’ve been raped badly, and I enjoy it 😀
I paid $22K for my S. At $24K, I don’t think, GTI is $2K better than my MCS. WRX might be $3K better than my MCS. MCS at $22K is not bad.
A couple of options later, your JCW is the same price as a 135i. That’s kookoo krazy.
Keen to see what Australian pricing will be. Market positioning should see it somewhere around AU$55K and given that the Aussie dollar is currently buying US$0.90+ you guys should stop your complaining, haha!
But If they’re not complaining they won’t have anything else to do.
MCS JCW $30
Cross coilovers $2.5
18″ wheels/tires $2.5
real base vehicle $35
135i $37
value?
I believe that MINI will sell precious few of these at this price. Then again, some folks have more $$ than sense.
Hell, I paid $27,800 for my 2005 MCS. I guess I fit into the category that I was describing… Nevermind.
I have no issue with the cost of this build at all. I do have issues with the partial build that was executed on it. Needs to be visually unique and have a performance suspensions in it. For me this car is as tempting as buying a M car with the stock suspension, shows me a mentality that leaves me cold on the offering.
Mini Cooper S: $22.3K
18 Inch JCW Wheels: $3K
Dealer JCW Kit Installed: $2.5K
DSC (Standard on JCW Factory): $0.5K
Total: $28.3K
So for the extra $900 ($29.2K in total) you get 15HP and an upgraded transmission. I think the black headliner and piano black finish is also standard on the JCW ($500 in options on an S). Lastly, you also get an electronic differential when DSC is turned off. That’s a LOT for $900. If you think this car is overpriced then the Cooper S is REALLY overpriced in comparison (should be $20K in my eyes).
The only thing I wish they had done was to not make the wheels required. Lower the price to $26.2K and no wheel upgrade. That way I could get the JCW Aero Kit, the sport suspension and this car as is for $29.2K. Then I could get after market rims and tires for about $1500 and have a JCW Factory Mini with body kit, rims and suspension for $31K in total.
Actually the tweaks on the engine, the upgraded clutch and transmission should be interesting to see what after market developers can do with it. All in all you buying a drive train that has been strengthened, something that I think contributed significantly to the cost of this.

One of the problems I see with this approach is, by taking away the most visually unique aspect of the JCW, it would make an already fairly indistinguishable car less unique from the Cooper S.
Can someone explain to me why the JCW “Factory” car requires ANY “Dealer Kits”???
Chris forgot to include suspension upgrade in his calculations. Either way, you are looking at low 30s for a car that still can’t outrun my GTI.
I like my current MCS, but when I want to go fast…
In this case we are being charged $7000 – a 30%(!!) premium on the base price – for a performance package. Please. A couple of options later and you are well over $30k. Once I’m there, I have to look at options like the 135, Evo, R32, etc. Or at that sweet, sweet used Elise with 9k miles that my neighbor is selling… Actually, I just can’t stop looking at that car.
Can’t outrun my GTI??? You giving odds on that?!!
Own MCS and GTI. GTI runs 1/4 mile in the low 14s consistently. JCW MCS can’t do that at the same price point. Get over it!
This “performance package” adds $7k or 30%(!!!) to the price of the base car. Insane. Add a couple of options and you are well over $30k. Once you are there, you have to look at the 135, Evo, R32, S2K, etc. Or that sweet, sweet used Elise that my neighbor is selling…
Any word yet on CAD pricing or did I miss it?
Get over what DH? No one’s even driven this car yet. You have no idea what it can do. Besides, I’d rather have a base MC than ANY VW. Can you say ” chic car”?
Do the math, einstein. Power/weight ratio is not pretty.
Having said that, I had been planning on buying one, but the price is getting too close to 135i territory for comfort.
If someone is interested in mere speed bang for buck then a Evo or Suburu might be the best bet. Even uglier and geekier that VWs. My Porsche blows all of them away but doesn’t have the the fun factor ofmy Cooper.
Agreed. That’s why my daily driver is a MCS…..the problem is that the “factory” JCW makes no performance or economic sense.
I think you guys are right, the config of this car is not a home-run. The fact that wheels are bundled into the price? Should be optional, yes.
Does the look / idea of the JCW Clubman seems a little strange? The red & black combo screams on the hardtop, but the Clubman has such a station-wagon stance that I don’t see it as a natural for this JCW styling.
About the price vs. a 135i… do you think you’ll find a 135i at MSRP in the foreseeable future? Heck, they marked up an M3 thirty-grand here in SoCal.
I’m not planning to buy either right out of the gate, but ordering a stripped 135i equates to a reasonably equipped “F” JCW. I really think that the hype that BMW has placed in the 135i is misguided.
If the economy keeps on tanking, then BMW will have to re-consider their lofty attitude. As they might have to with the “F” JCW…
Not really a huge price difference vs. the R53 JCW (factory version)… I’ll make a final judgement when the website lets me build one… I didn’t think the GP was worth it either until I was able to really see what the package consisted of.
Ian F. I agree with you. Hard to justify it until you see it. But I think that this car will have SO much stuff that you cannot SEE that people will quickly say it’s not worth it.
Performance cars should not be ALL about the shiney bits.
Doug, 135i’s are pretty much going for MSRP. A few dealers have marked them up, but the majority are going straight MSRP. There are even some dealers giving $500 below MSRP. Granted, it’s a niche car, but there is/will be enough available that you can find one at least at MSRP.
Personally I’m going to wait another year, maybe two, as there is a rumor of a 135i performance variant (although not tii) in the works; time will see. I really, really wanted to like the JCW, and have that as my next car, but frankly I’m underwhelmed at present. Haven’t driven the 135i yet, but everything I’ve heard is that its a real kick in the pants. Doubt it will have the character of a MINI, but the performance is going to be hard to pass on.
Ok, I’m late to the game as the discussion on this topic has tapered off for about a month now… but I wanted to say, I just want the engine…and ask. Anyone have any opinion as to whether MINI USA will offer just the engine upgrades as an option to the R56 S?
