Record Breaking for a Good Cause

The good folks at Seven Cities MINI and Hampton Roads Club MINI are at it again. This time, they mean to not only break the record for longest line of MINIs, then intend to shatter it! Their goal this year is to get 500 MINIs, end-to-end and driving in a straight line by Guiness rules to get into the record book.
Lanexa VA on Saturday July 26, 2008 is where you want to be. The proceeds of this year’s
event will again be donated to the Naval Special Warfare Foundation to benefit
the families of fallen Navy SEALs.
This year’s event will run from 9am until midnight with the Guinness World Record attempt taking place at 2pm. Full details and information below.
>Seven Cities MINI and Hampton Roads Club MINI, along with support from neighboring Mini/MINI clubs in North Carolina, Washington DC and Pennsylvania, will be hosting another attempt at the Guinness World Record for the most MINIs / Minis in a parade in Lanexa Virginia at the Rockahock Campground. Our Official Guinness claim number is 208356. This year, to raise the bar so our fellow MINI enthusiasts from across the pond can’t take it from us, we are going to try for 500 cars so we need your support! All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Naval Special Warfare Foundation in support of the families of fallen Navy SEALs.
> This will be an all-day event starting at 9am and running through midnight! The parade will begin at 2pm. There will be food, beer, live bands, children’s activities, vendors, competitions and car shows. If you still aren’t certain that you would like to attend, please keep in mind that the Williamsburg Pottery Factory, Colonial
Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement, Busch Gardens and several Outlet Malls are within easy driving distance of Rockahock. Why not make a weekend of it?
> We have made a deal with the Ramada Inn at 6493 Richmond Road in Williamsburg. Their telephone number is (757) 565-1111. The Ramada Inn is the closest accommodations to Rockahock Campground at 14.6 miles away. We have secured a special rate of $49 per night. You have to register before June 26 2008 to secure that rate so make your reservations now! You can also camp at Rockahock or reserve a cabin or yurt!
> More details will be posted on the 2008 Guinness World Record Attempt event board on North American Motoring and Seven Cities MINI messageboards as they become available. Come and be a part of something really big and help out the families of our fallen SEALs!
Thanks Jeff for the heads up and good luck!

I participated in this last year, it was fun. 🙂
However, the real question is if it can be done again… because unless I’m mistaken, the current record is actually 868:

If the organizers are still going to try, I’ll be happy to help participate (i.e. not trying to be a bad sport about it!), but the difference between 500 and 868 isn’t to be taken lightly!

Most of them are classic Minis, but there are a few MINIs in there as well.
I’ve seen some of that “parade” on Roberts TwistyBitz video too … I think the Guiness rules require a maximum distance between each car which is quite small – the Holland cars look too spread out to qualify?
Hey, there’s my old Raiders badge.
Go Al Davis! 🙂
Looks like the sign at the gas station says $1.89. Those were the good ol’ days!
MiniBro, FiverDriver, and I made the tail end of last year’s attempt. What a proper scene! Highly recommend it.
Good luck to you folks, I hope you succeed.
Ian, not sure if IMM in Lelystad made the record but I saw where the Guinness people were counting and it was at the start of the parade not farther down the line. They to were asking the MINI/Minis to bunch it up! So not sure if they indeed make the record but they sure did have enough MINI/Minis they some 1700, or so the IMM website says.
Here’s my video made by my son-n-law Martijn after we came back for the Lelystad event.

Sorry DB but I changed a few things… this is the proper link.

So this is the same weekend as MTTS Chicago? Hmm… Not good. That will undoubtedly be pulling away folks that might have otherwise considered making the trip. There aren’t very many comments here either which you might consider an “interest indicator.” Has anyone confirmed what the latest record is and what number needs to be beat?
I’m currently planning to get to this because I can work other travels around it (and because I can’t work MTTS in!), but I don’t want to make the effort if it will be a dud. (Read: someone needs to step up the marketing and PR blitzing to get the buzz going!)
I’ve been trying to generate interest Mini2Go, I really have… I still can’t find any confirmation of the Dutch “record” either. Even if we don’t set a record, the event was a blast last year and it was just a few hours. This year’s event will run from 9am to midnight and there is plenty to do in the region that a family could make a very nice weekend out of the trip to boot! 🙂 There is Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Jamestown Settlement, The Williamsburg Pottery Factory (takes a day just to browse!) and more outlet malls than you can shake a stick at!
There is also King’s Dominion about an hour and fifteen minute drive away. I really do hope that we have a good turnout. I know that people will have a blast!
