Outside the US MINI Connected has been available for over a month now. The hardware is out there and the iPhone app is downloadable from the European and UK iTunes store. As we’ve reported the hold-up in the US revolves around further refining the software for a US specific version of the app. At this point MINI USA is telling us that December production (January deliveries) will be the first time the US sees it.
So we thought we’d whet your appetite another sneak peak at the hardware and software with this official Euro market MINI Connected guide. Now it’s worth noting that the US release will feature more functionality than is listed in this PDF. We’ve already gone over the option in details but we’ve got a full rundown of features after the break.
MINI Connected Manual / Official MINI PDF
For a refresher, lets take a look a closer look at the option. MINI Connected allows your iPhone to Connected the outside world to your MINI. The option adds a new 6.5†hi-resolution screen (the same as on the 2011 Nav system), Comfort Bluetooth (6NE) with Smartphone prep (6NF), a Combox control box (interface the iPhone with the car), Voice recognition (620), and a joystick controller to access all features just as the MINI Navigation uses. Currently, only the iPhone is supported, but the Android and Blackberry Smartphones are being planned as well for a later launch.
Also, you can disconnect your iPhone or iPod from the cable and still listen to your music via Bluetooth wirelessly. This means you can literally walk away from the car and control your music with your iPhone from 20 feet away. And with the new system, the only cable you need is the standard iPhone cable that came from Apple.
Diving deeper into MINI Connected’s online functions, let’s take a look at what can come through to your car. A audio feature called Webradio allows you to search for radio stations around the world by country, genre and so forth. From there just select the station and it’s streamed into the car.
You can also access RSS feeds (like MotoringFile’s for instance) with MINI Connected. Simply select playback and voice recognition will read out the text to you and continue on beyond what you see, playing back the entire article. While stopped, you can also read the whole news article.
The much maligned Mission Control is also a part of MINI Connected and features over 3,500 sayings. You can pick and choose what you want to hear and adjust the “enthusiasm level†by selecting your driving theme. In addition, the upgraded system will have a “MINIMALISM†Analyzer that gives you real-time hints for optimum fuel efficiency. Perhaps the most important feature of Mission Control? You can turn it off.
Another new feature is Dynamic Music. It allows you to choose from several beats and based on your driving conditions, can increase or decrease the intensity and rhythm, allowing you to literally create your own track while driving.
Also incorporated is Google Local Search. Here, you can search for common items such as restaurants, fuel stations and even post offices by location, type and even business name. When a result is found you can select it and if they have a phone number and address listed online, Google will display it right in your car.
And if you are a Facebook and Twitter fan, you can read recent posts just like the news feeds where limited text is shown while driving, but can be played back to you thanks to text-to-voice technology. If you are stopped, then you can read more. If you need to respond, MINI Connected can help you post with pre-populated responses based on information that it knows. For instance, you can simply choose from several sentences that will include things like temperature and vehicle speed. And if you have NAV, MINI Connected can even include your destination and current location. You could post something like this with just one twist and one click- “Hey guys, it’s 3:00 PM and I’m in my MINI driving Southbound to Main Street on this warm 74 degree day.â€
Lastly, there’s option 7L5, MINI Connected with Navigation that also features Real Time Traffic Information. The new NAV system uses an internal solid state memory so DVDs are not needed. Maps can be updated through a USB port in the glovebox. Best part? It’s going to be only $1,750, which is cheaper than last year, but adds everything mentioned above with MINI Connected.

It sounds nifty, but I’m not on board with the utility of the feature list. I’m hoping that 3rd party apps can tap into this to provide something that I would find valuable – data from the ECU, leveraging the phones built in GPS rather than the mini gps…etc. Cause otherwise there does not seem to be much really worthwhile to what its offering now. If it was open to outside apps I’m sure a lot of creativity would be applied to it.

Ugh, the continuing delays in shipping this to the US are frustrating. We were willing to wait for the 2011s to arrive, but I’m not sure we can hold out for another four months just to get Connected. We may end up skipping this option and getting our 2011 sooner.

Dealership in Washington State, we have already been receiving vehicles with option fitted.

Perhaps I’m just an old luddite, but I fail to see any utility in this very expensive system. I’ve got an HK radio, my iPhone, my gas pedal, brake pedal, clutch, shifter, etc. Why do I need to have a distracting item in my car which will cause my insurance rates to rise. this MINI Connected is part of the this generations need to be always connected to something or someone. Get a life people.

p>@Micheal</p

They do have a life….That’s the point!

The release says that your phone stops the app when you get a phone call, the it restarts after the phone call is over. What is going to happen on the screen in the MINI? How long will it take to restart? It would be nice if the app didn’t shut down, and keep running while the phone is active. Like the iPhone.

Dealership in Washington State, we have already been receiving vehicles with option fitted.

Any of you tried it out? Your impressions?

It doesn’t work unless you have the iPhone app which won’t be out until late fall. That’s why it’s officially delayed in the US.

I think they should make Mission Control as part of the alarm system, or active if the wrong key is used. That should annoy any would be thief enough to give the car back.

While I’m not totally sold on this approach, this is the start of a lot of stuff that is coming. Really, there are two ways to do it: Build it into the car like OnStar or Ford Sync, or integrate the existing device into the car via some application etc. There is a great article in Wards about some stuff that Delphi is working on….

http://wardsauto.com/ar/delphi_smart_phone_100826/index.html

I like this approach better, but then again, it’s just vaporware….

Anyway, the current list of features is a bit underwhelming for Connect. But it’s very obvious that this is just the beginning for what is planned to be a more complete offering.

Matt

@ Jo. Read Bulletin # M-30-0910-0012. Your cars that have come in do not have MINI Connected. Trust me. Read the bulletin for clarification.

There’s way too much hype surrounding MINI Connected. After reading the brochure, I’m not convinced this is a feature I would want. I’m about burnt out on Facebook and certainly don’t need Twitter in my car. But wait, does this mean I can play Angry Birds on my MINI’s touch screen?

That’s WHET not wet as in your article,,, Good Stuff otherwise

Moving things from the phone to the car like reading RSS, twitter, or facebook is just without value IMO. Leveraging the connection to have a multi configuration data display on the iphone showing you oil pressure and temperature, or plain english explanations of display warnings, or current tire pressure, just displaying stuff you can’t otherwise see – those are things that would add value.

Definitely sounds underwhelming. Why could I not use TomTom or similar on the iPhone instead of more cost for car nav? No mention of Pandora. Sad.

Will it be possible to connect a iPod in the glove box USB and a smartphone (iphone or later Blackberry) via armrest or console located USB port (or Blue Tooth) and use the glove box ipod for music and the smart phone for voice and connect (and maybe music too)?

Also, my girlfriend has an iphone and I have a blackberry. How easy will it be to change devices? Will the armrest adapter handle either? Or, maybe there could be an armrest that either can sit in and connect via usb?

Thanks.

I’m happy we can tell that the audio streaming via bluetooth is A2DP. This feature was not included in prior models with the bluetooth option. This alone can have many phones other than the iphone be able to play music via bluetooth.

Quote: “And with the new system, the only cable you need is the standard iPhone cable that came from Apple.” Do you need to have Mini Connected for this to work?

I saw several 2011s at a local dealer today that looked like they had this installed – there was a big screen in the speedo like the press photos we’ve seen here on MF, but the window stickers had no mention of Connected or Navigation. They did list Bluetooth/USB, Visual Boost, and Combox controller. So if it’s not MINI Connected or Navigation, what’s installed in these cars?

The large screen can be ordered independent of Connected outside the US – it’s called Visual Boost radio. There were some car that slipped into the US with this option.

Apologies if this is obvious…but why can’t we order the 2011 Mini now with Nav? Is that delayed along with Mini Connected?

@JLT If you order Nav I believe you are also getting Connected, which is on hold.

Visual Boost Radio sounds cool. The biggest thing I would want with MINI Connected is to play Pandora with a nice interface on the display. That’s all I want.

Gabe, do you know why the US version of Mini connected is different? And which functions are missing in the EU version compared to the US version?
