World Premier: MINI Augmented Vision Glasses

MINI just dropped a prototype – an augmented reality pair of drive glasses that blends the functionality of the car with the outside world. Will they remain a prototype or will MINI build them? Will they succeed where something more macro like Google Glass failed? So many questions. We should have more (including videos) shortly.
Official Release: MINI is revealing the shape of things to come at the Auto Shanghai show with a pioneering innovation. “MINI Augmented Vision gives an insight into how intelligent connectivity between a MINI car and eyewear into which relevant content is projected might work in the future,” explains Dr. Jörg Preißinger, project-manager MINI Augmented Vision, BMW Group research and technology. “Working with several Qualcomm companies, we have created an interlinked system and augmented reality eyewear with a characteristic MINI design that revolutionise the experience both in and outside the vehicle. This prototype with its customised, interactive functions succeeds in fusing augmented reality with the brand’s trademark sense of lifestyle.”
Using see-through technology, the AR eyewear shows relevant information in the driver’s direct field of vision but without concealing other road users, thereby serving to increase safety and comfort while driving.
The following functions will be projected into the field of view with MINI Augmented Vision:
– Destination entry for navigation and transfer to vehicle: Selecting destination points when outside the vehicle, then transferring them to the vehicle.
– First Mile / Last Mile: Navigation display from the current location to the vehicle or from the vehicle to the final destination.
– Head-up display functions: Display of speed, speed limits etc. in the eyewear so the information is in the driver’s primary field of view, with data always shown in same place above steering wheel to make sure that no road users are concealed from sight.
– Contact-analogue navigation and points of interest: Reality is enhanced by contact-analogue navigation arrows “on” the road, as well as display of points of interest along the route, such as open parking spaces. The driver´s attention can always stay focused on the traffic.
– Messaging: A small icon is shown in the eyewear when a message is received. The SMS/message can then be read out by the car while driving for safety.
– X-Ray View / transparent vehicle parts: A virtual view through parts of the vehicle (such as A-pillars and doors) serves to render external areas or objects concealed by the car visible.
– Augmented Parking: This facilitates parking by projecting the images from a camera housed in the (farside) mirror into the eyewear. In this way, the distance from the curb can be clearly and easily ascertained.
– Design and color-concept of the eyewear were created by Designworks for MINI.
MINI Augmented Vision has been developed in collaboration with several Qualcomm companies.
“We are proud to have helped develop a breakthrough augmented reality interface between eyewear and the automobile,” says Jay Wright, Vice President, Qualcomm Connected Experiences, Inc. “MINI Augmented Vision offers a compelling example of what’s possible today, and what we can expect in the future.”

April 1st was last Wednesday.

I’ll be honest. That was my first thought too.

Is this a serious thing? It just seems a little, goofy? Heck, many people had issue with Google Glass and that was a pretty slick design! Augmented reality is going to be very big in the near future.

The idea is insanely cool, I hope they follow through with it. I also hope they go back to the drawing board on the design…

Even their April Fools Joke is delayed..

zinger of the month :)

Give it a few weeks and they’ll announce a recall…

Or, they will ignore for a few years and then quietly do a “good will” fix of the joke.

How about you cut all the gimmicks and give us a well designed car that is awesome to drive…

I would like to drive ‘awesomely’ as the video shows. Where can I do it without endangering people, animals, or property, without being sent to a mental institution or state prison?

Multiple tracks available ;)

Agree, I wish MINI’s focus was back on the driving aspect of the car. Too many fluff gadgets, mood rings, and useless tech nonsense.
Please build a drivers’ car instead of one that attracts Camry drivers trying to be cool.

I agree. I like some of the tech but wish MINI would bring back/put back a real Oil dipstick, Engine Temp gauge or a chrono pkg, Also, MINI made all that effort to upgrade the interior with better quality materials but put in a dopy fuel gauge thingy. Cheap plastic too.

They could have just put the same 1/4 to 1/2 moon size Screen as the Rev gauge is. Include in it, Engine Temp, Oil and fuel gauge. I’d even be ok with the Sonic RS fuel gauge type LCD look.

No need for Twitter or Facebook updates. Also the entry Nav system should include traffic as standard. Shouldn’t have to upgrade to the high end system to get that. Having traffic on a NAV system is one of the reasons to get it.

F56 does have a engine temp readout.

Really? Hmmm. Not what I’ve found in my owners manual or on the gauges located behind steering wheel. If you mean the readout is in the Visual Boost, maybe, but that’s not like the R50/52/53 type gauge/indicator that was in the center speedo (needle engine temp and needle fuel level). That’s what I would like to have back.

It would be easy for MINI to do. Instead of the current fuel indicator 1/8 moon size plastic thingy on the right, just take same size display on left (rev) and add that to the right and include a nice fuel LCD display (like Sonic RS) and a Engine Temp plus some other Data. Would look so much better and add to the “premium” classification and look.

I just find that MINI made all that effort to upgrade the interior materials, quality and changes but put in a cheap plastic looking and feeling fuel gauge level indicator that’s not premium in looks or feel. Not sure why they did that?

It’s in the speedo digital display. Tap the button on the end of the blinker stalk until it shows up. This one just shows a bar with cold on left and hot on right with a dot showing on the bar for engine temp. If you have an upgraded center screen you can can also get actual temp with MINI connected “sport gauges”

Ok thanks. Still figuring it all out. Have only had new MINI for 1 day. Significant changes from my R50/52. Reviewing owners manual and looking at You Tube videos.

Absolutely. Mini needs to get back to being Mini. Goggles won’t help that much.

I would think the glasses would make it hard to pay attention to the Nav, and the head up display, while streaming music in my stick shift and texting in traffic. I guess this is why we need autonomous driving.

I think this would be incredibly distracting. I realize it’s just a concept but look at that image. You have the basic speedo, the hud speedo.. and another big circle with… the speed in it and a pic of your dog because reasons.

Well this explains everything….These are like beer goggles!

If you look at the F56 while wearing these… the car suddenly becomes attractive and you take one home with you….then you wake up the next day and think what a fish face in the driveway.

Do these come with that ridiculous key fob?

Ha ha ha… love it!

I see you working here, but making everything appear mini and have less overhang will have unintended consequences for about half of us.

If this is “real” I doubt many States in the US will allow these to be worn while operating a vehicle. Limited peripheral vision issues and could fall under potential distracted driving issues. It’s bad enough already with drivers not focusing on driving/operating vehicle, I see this gadget making it worse.

R.O. do you have your new ride yet? I love my f56….had it on really curvy road today and couldn’t stop smiling.

Dayna, Just picked it up today from the Dealer. Volcanic Orange with black roof, black mirrors caps w/Gold Union Jack graphics.16″ Black Victory Spokes. Going to take her out for a nice drive on Sunday. I’ve got to learn and get use to the difference between the R50/52 I had (till this afternoon) and this F56 S. I drove it a bit in Eco mode (naaw, won’t be doing that to often). In sport mode – wow. Nice!

Also have to get use to the accelerator. In the R50/52, it required more pressure. In today’s limited drive, I found the the accelerator in the F56 to have a lighter touch.

Liking so far. :-)

Surprised to hear about your 16 inch wheels, thought all the cooper s came with 17s. Anyway, sounds great hope you enjoy it as much as I have mine.

In the US, the F56 S comes with 16″ Tires/Wheels. It’s an upgrade option either via sports pkg or standalone option for 17″ tires/wheels. I didn’t want 17’s and I really liked the Victory Spokes vs. the Tentacle or Cosmos.

This thing is for real (but still in development). A journalist described a hands-on demo:

The Verge just did a nice writeup of MINI’s glasses: http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/19/8447813/mini-augmented-vision-concept-demo
