The Truth About Cars recently had a chance to spend some time with MINIUSA’s $20,600 Oxford Edition MINI Cooper and came away impressed by the value and overall package.
No, it’s not a performance car. Yet this basic Mini is simply a pleasure to drive. The steering is light and direct, with very little body roll to the suspension. The shifter has similarly light, not-too-long throws. The clutch action is light and progressive. If you’re looking for a car to introduce the beauty of manual transmissions, you’d struggle to do better than a three-cylinder Mini Cooper.
The Truth About Cars
It’s been a long time since there was a MINI Cooper Under $20,000 and unfortunately this isn’t one that most of us can buy.
What is the MINI Cooper Oxford Edition and how do I buy one?
MINIUSA only offers the car to college students and Active Duty Members of any branch of the U.S. Military, as well as recently retired or honorably discharged members (within a 12-months).
“We’re proud to extend the MINI Oxford Edition offer to active and recently retired or honorably discharged members of the U.S. Military,” said Patrick McKenna, Department Head, Product Planning & Events, MINI USA. “We believe the MINI Oxford Edition provides tremendous value to those who have honorably served in our armed forces and who are looking for a fun, stylish, feature-packed car that won’t break the bank.”
Standard equipment includes the MINI Connected Infotainment System with a 6.5 inch high resolution screen, rear-view camera, park distance control and MINI Teleservices and emergency call. The MINI Oxford Edition also comes with upgraded 17” wheels in silver or black, automatic or manual transmission, dual-pane panoramic moonroof, heated seats, and a choice of six exterior body colors.
The MINI Oxford Edition continues to remain available to eligible current full- or part-time students of any two- or four-year accredited college or university, recent college graduates who are within 12 months of their graduation, as well as students enrolled in post-bachelor’s degree programs, such as graduate school, law school, or medical school.
The MINI Oxford Edition is currently available at dealerships across the U.S.
YOU ARE OFF IN WEIGHT. IT IS NOT 3600 pounds in weight. It is around 2700 lbs.
For the record that’s an erroneous number that is in MINIUSA’s press material. We’ve told them to correct it it’s still out there. I also meant to edit that out given that MF readers would have a field day with that incorrect figure.
They do seem to be. I caught several other websites using the erroneous number as well but no way to warm them. I can’t believe MINI still hasn’t fixed it.
I’ll remove my comment on Facebook as it’s created a debate with someone who seems to think the 3600 pounds is correct.
The Oxford is actually available to everyone… It was just available to college students and military members, but MINI opened it up to everyone. The restrictions were complicated.
