Official MINI Press Release: In the face of continuing high demand for the new model generation, MINI brand dealers sold 24.0% more vehicles to customers in August (14,452) than in the same month last year (11,832). For the year to the end of August 2007, the number of MINI sold thus reached 141,082 units (prev.yr.: 128,711/+9.6%).
Cuz the motor in the R56t rocks!
Of course, it could also be because all the owners of R50-R53 are trading in to get a 2006 before they’re gone. Does MINI publish a breakdown of the models sold?

35 R50 and 53s in august – your theory does not seem true.

It said sales are up 24% in August. How many leftover 2006 models do you think were so new in august 07? LoL
I doubt very much there are brand new, unsold 2006 R50 Cooper hardtops sitting in some dealer lot. perhaps there is at least a handful of unsold/new R53 inventory somewhere.
However, most buyers are not even aware that these cars exist. Besides, R50/53 tintop production eneded 10 months ago.
Funny how R56 loyalists harp on “20”or “10” R53s sold last month.
Nifty trick to deviate from the sales reality of the R56, but it doesn’t work.
MINI is cutting back on R56 coupe production beginning this month and I wonder why…..?
“harp on” – you have to be kidding Frank – you are the king of “harp on”.
The sales reality is that they are selling record amounts, no nifty tricks included.
And we all know that production now includes building the intro fleet of Clubman, which means there is less capacity available for coupes. There, now you know why.
jeeze Nigel,
fact is mini sold over 14,000 2007 models this month. Last year same month they sold 11,800 06 models. What is hard to figure out about that? Some people can’t stand that MINI continues to grow despite the fact that r53s are no longer made.

ing back on R56 coupe production beginning this month and I wonder why…..?

because they didn’t build a new plant for the clubman. They can only produce so many cars per month. Throw in a few thousand clubmans and it takes away from production slots from everything else.
the formatting on that last comment got messed up but I think you can still figure it out.
I’m a little puzzled by these sales posts. Last year during late spring and summer, the MINI plant in Oxford was preparing to begin production on the R56, so production of R50 & R53 production was slowly reduced.
In this post: MINI sales down 11% in August 2006, there are even posts commenting towards the reduction in production. Why is there now surprise when sales are up over the numbers that were in decline last year?
Taking away the 11% decrease in sales last year from the 24% increase reported this year over last, and we do have a 13% increase in sales over the R50/R53, which is more relevant in comparing sales of R50/R53 production in full swing versus R56 production.
Eto, great post. While my detractors choose to recite the MINI press releases until they are blue in the face, someone decides to do the math and confirm what I (and others) have been saying all along….
The R56 is selling but not significantly better than its predecessor. This should be terribly dissapointing for BMW who tauted the new car as the best thing since the invention of sliced bread. The math does not lie!
And this ties perfectly into MINÒs decision to cut back production of the R56 coupe. They know well that they are flooding the market and that supply has finally met demand.
Uhhmmm… I don’t think they are disappointed. You have not caught on to that yet, huh?
