2010 MINI Hardtop

Official Release: The MINI Experience Continues: Go-kart-driving fun, an interior that provides the maximum amount of car in the minimum amount of space and a myriad of personalization possibilities keep the 2010 MINI Cooper and Cooper S Hardtops on top of the small-car premium segment as sales continue to be strong.

The body of the latest-generation MINI – introduced in 2007 – boasts evolutionary development from the iconic 1959 Classic Mini, while the interior includes styling cues that are evocative of the original and contain the latest technological advances found today. And powering the 2010 MINI Cooper Hardtop and MINI Cooper S Hardtop are a pair of 1.6 liter, four-cylinder engines resembling the original MINI’s in cylinder number and placement, transversely over the front axle, but far more efficient, cleaner and powerful.

The turbocharged 1.6-liter version in the Cooper S produces 172 horsepower, which translates into 0-to-60 mph acceleration in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 139 mph. The naturally-aspirated engine in the Cooper, also 1.6 liters, features fully-variable valve timing and control and accelerates to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds, with top speed of 126 mph.

Compared with the MINI Cooper Hardtop, the MINI Cooper S Hardtop has a more sporting suspension set-up, and as an option both models are available with a sport suspension for an even higher standard of driving pleasure.
Despite their much higher level of dynamic performance and sporting character, both MINIs return superior fuel economy, with the Cooper S Hardtop having a 2010 EPA fuel economy estimate of 26 City/34 Highway mpg for a combined EPA estimate of 29 mpg. The Cooper Hardtop is even more efficient with EPA 2010 estimates of 28/37 City/Highway for a combined rating of 32 mpg. Both fuel economy numbers are for models equipped with manual transmission.

The MINI Cooper and Cooper S Hardtops both come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. Both models can be ordered with an optional six-speed automatic transmission that features a sport mode and includes steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters on the Cooper S, allowing the driver to keep both hands on the wheel even during gearshifts.

The EPS Electric Power-assisted Steering helps make the MINI even more nimble and agile on the road, by delivering speed-related assistance ensuring low steering forces when parking and precise control at high speeds. And when the standard Sport button is depressed, EPAS offers a sportier mode that specifically increases steering forces for an even more direct driving experience.
MacPherson-style spring struts on the front axle ensure precise wheel guidance, keeping the steering almost entirely free of drive forces in fast bends, when accelerating and when applying the brakes. The multi-link rear axle, a concept unique in the MINI segment, ensures optimum tire contact with the road at all times through its kinematics.

Celebrating MINI Heritage – MINI 50 Mayfair and Camden.

In August 2009, MINI celebrated the brand’s 50th birthday and marked the occasion with two anniversary packages for MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S Hardtops, the Camden and the Mayfair. Both anniversary vehicles offer unique interiors, mirror caps, side scuttles, grille badges, 17-inch alloy wheels and several other special features. They will be available for a limited time, beginning in September 2009 through July 2010.

The Mayfair package looks back proudly on half a century of motoring history.
As the name suggests, the MINI 50 Mayfair exudes the style and elegance expected from London’s most traditional district – complete with astounding get-up-and-go.

The Camden looks forward eagerly to the next 50 years. Like its London namesake, the Camden is bursting with energy, spirit and an in-your-face attitude.

A unique feature included in the Camden package is Mission Control, an interface with the vehicle that enables the MINI to literally speak to the driver. The technology uses a variety of car condition and environmental information to provide the driver in a MINI typical, entertaining way, with situation related information and advises. This feature gives the Camden a real personality, and offers the driver a sense of direct interaction with the vehicle. Signals from the vehicle are used to create over and over again different situation related dialogs. In addition to the entertainment value, the functional benefit is that it can support the driver to interpret information from the vehicle correctly.

MINI Cooper and Cooper S Hardtop Design – Clear look and a friendly face.
“From the original to the original” – this was the philosophy in creating the body design of the second-generation modern MINI. The entire car was redesigned from the ground up, with many details and features being modified and enhanced in the process. But in its outer look, the MINI remains unmistakable, the radiator grill and large circular headlights characterizing the front end of the car and giving it the traditional, “bulldog,” friendly appearance.

The front end and front design of the car also serves to distinguish the individual model variants. One significant difference setting the two variants apart is the more powerful and muscular looking hood, which includes an exclusive air-intake scoop on the Cooper S, is some 0.8-inches higher than that of the smooth one on the Cooper.

Seen from the side, the MINI is firm, taut and striking, resting powerfully on its wheels in a look well-known to friends and aficionados of the brand as the “stance on the wheels.” Another characteristic is the seemingly uninterrupted “flow” of windows around the car, adorning the new MINI with a visual of having a, 360-degree band of glass.

The distinct “shoulders” at the rear of the new MINI form a counter-element to the longer front end of the car. The well-known MINI proportions are maintained and are faithful to the original Classic Mini.

Combined with the horizontal geometry of the interior and, in particular, the dashboard, the instrument displays in their purist, round design characterize the overall design theme of the cockpit. The central element is the MINI-signature center speedometer, which for 2010 features a new maximum speed of 160 mph. The displays and controls for the entertainment systems as well as the display for the optional navigation systems are integrated in the speedometer, while the tachometer remains a separate unit positioned, as befits a sporting car, behind the steering wheel in the driver’s line of sight.

A round transmitter finished in typical MINI style replaces the conventional door and ignition key, with the driver controlling engine operation with a start/stop button. All instruments and controls are very smooth and easy to operate, positioned at the right point for optimum ergonomics.

The interior lighting reflects typical MINI style and class, with the addition of ambient lighting which can be varied in stages from warm orange to sporting blue. Serving as discreet “waterfall illumination” from above and as indirect illumination of the roof lining, the door storage bins and the door handle recesses, this illumination scheme creates a unique atmosphere inside the 2010 MINI.

The 2010 MINI continues to offer a wide range of options and special equipment to meet the demands and personal preferences of virtually any buyer. Wood, leather, various trim-and-color combinations mean the interior can be tailored for an “exact” customer fit.

The 2010 MINI is offered in 11 body colors with eight metallics available on the Cooper and Cooper S. The external look is further customizable thanks to additional color and graphic options for the roof and mirror caps. Optionally, both the MINI Cooper S and the MINI Cooper are available with Chrome line interior and exterior options.

Complete range of safety equipment.

The modified structure of the body shell, as well as a wide range of safety features, in turn, help to ensure the 2010 MINI meets or exceeds all accident-protection requirements. In a recent NHTSA test, MINI excelled in all aspects with four- and five-star ratings.

Reflecting the premium standard of the MINI, both models come with a wide range of safety equipment, including six standard airbags to enhance occupant safety. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is standard on all models and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) is optional on both models. DTC also includes an EDLC (Electronic Differential Lock Control) function that controls wheelspin on the drive wheels during acceleration by using front brake force to manage the speed and torque differential between the wheels.

Active safety is enhanced in critical driving situations by the standard Anti-lock Brakes System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC)

Brake Assist on both models detects emergency operation of the brakes and builds up maximum brake pressure very quickly. Hill Assist start-off assistance, in conjunction with DSC, maintains brake pressure for up to 3 seconds after the brake pedal has been released and before the clutch has been engaged, to prevent the car from rolling back when setting off on an uphill gradient.

Runflat tires standard on the MINI Cooper S.

The MINI Cooper comes standard with 15-inch light-alloy rims and 175/65 R 15 tires. The MINI Cooper S, in turn, is equipped with 16-inch light-alloy rims and 195/55 R 16 tires. Even larger 17-inch rims running on 205/45 R 17 tires are optionally available.

The MINI Cooper S boasts runflat tires as yet another standard feature, modified in this case to reflect the suspension set-up of the MINI. Thanks to their failsafe running characteristics, these tires allow the driver to go on motoring even when a tire is completely flat, covering a distance of up to 90 miles at a maximum speed of 50 mph.

And every 2010 MINI is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring system (TPM) that permanently monitors air pressure and informs the driver in the event of an emergency.

Entertainment and Navigation system

Cutting-edge entertainment and navigation systems can be specified by the MINI buyer. The optional navigation system features a 6.5-inch TFT color display housed within the center speedometer; the corners on the monitor are rounded off and thus adjusted to the circular shape of the center speedometer.

TFT monitor technology provides an easy-to-read display, free of glare even in bright sunlight; display brightness is driver adjustable. In the dark, background illumination ensures optimum clarity and readability. And the presentation of navigation graphics also reflects the MINI style in both its configuration and color scheme.

The optional navigation system comes complete with a CD player positioned above the removable control panel that houses the DVD drive for the navigation disc. A joystick on the center console, enables the driver to easily and conveniently control navigation, entertainment and communications functions in conjunction with menus displayed on the screen.

External music systems such as an MP3 player are easy to connect to the audio system through the standard AUX IN port, allowing the driver and passengers to enjoy their personal music archives in the MINI at any time. A specific USB-enabled adapter for an Apple iPod is optional, providing convenient control of the player via the MINI’s entertainment system.

Sporting highlights from John Cooper Works Tuning.

Components from John Cooper Works provide the latest road-going MINI with classic motorsport technology. The wide range of Works Accessories named after the legendary Formula 1 car maker and MINI tuner includes enhancements like the 12.4-inch, cross-drilled front-brake discs for the MINI Cooper S. To match these larger brakes, John Cooper Works offers 18-inch double-spoke light-alloy wheels, the largest wheels approved for MINI (7J x 18), mounting 205/40X18 low-profile, tires (and featuring runflat technology). The Dealer installed John Cooper Works Tuning Kit available for manual and automatic transmission raises the output of the MINI Cooper S to 189hp and the maximum torque to 185 lb-ft (with the over boost function temporary to 200 lb-ft). The kit enables the car to accelerate from 0-60mph in 6.5sec.

Another highlight of the John Cooper Works accessory line is the Aerodynamic Kit with the front and rear air dam, an all-black hood grille and new side skirts, providing a sporty and aggressive look to the MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S. This aero kit can also be supplemented by two roof spoilers: The John Cooper Works roof spoiler with a carbon surface approved for both the MINI Cooper S and MINI Cooper; and the single-piece roof spoiler finished on request in body color. The youthful appearance of the package is enhanced by multi-spoke 17-inch light-alloy wheels carrying 205/45X17 tires.

By tradition, special roof graphics and mirror caps play an important role in customizing the MINI. The 2010 MINI offers the Union Jack, Checkered Flag and the letters “MINI” amongst its roof graphics.

Mirror caps and door handle trim with the Union Jack and Checkered Flag motifs highlight the British heritage and sporting DNA of the MINI. And to add to this, the 2010 MINI is also available with exterior components from the John Cooper Works Tuning Range made by hand from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. These include panels for the front air scoop, the exterior mirrors, and the grab handle on the tailgate.

The 2010 MINI Convertible embodies the thrill of open-air motoring in unmistakably MINI style. Raising the high standard set by its predecessor, the MINI Convertible features improvements in the areas of design, quality, handling, performance, efficiency, and functionality.

The two-door body style and soft-top roof deliver unique proportions, sleek lines, and truly individual style. Design cues clearly link the convertible to the MINI family of vehicles and show an evolutionary development of the car’s design.

Refined overall appearance highlights the stretched silhouette and ensures enhanced presence from both front and rear. Expertly modeled body surfaces, low-roofline for roadster-like flair, concealed rollover protection bar and signature MINI headlamps and taillights complete the look. Four-pivot joints for the luggage compartment lid are mounted inside the car to ensure a harmonious and sleek appearance.

An electrohydraulically-powered soft top with sliding roof function comes standard, and allows the driver to open and close the soft top in 15 seconds, even while the car is in motion, up to 18 mph. The standard Openometer is a special feature that records the time spent travelling with the roof down. A wider range of paint colors, roof colors, wheel choices, upholstery and interior trim choices provide endless opportunities for personalization. Also, model-specific optional extras and special equipment are available.
The electromechanically-operated Active Rollover Protection Bar situated behind the rear seats, is activated by the car’s central safety electronics in the event of a rollover. The innovative, single rollover protection bar allows for optimum visibility to the rear and sides of the car. Standard through-loading storage between the luggage and passenger compartments expands the cargo space.

The flexible storage system delivers outstanding functionality. The easy-load system includes: an expanded luggage compartment opening, rear seat backrests that can be folded down and locked into position, and a pivoting, two-position shelf for packages. Luggage compartment capacity increases from 6.0 cu ft with the roof closed and rear seats, up to 23.3 cu ft with the rear-seats folded down.

Two four-cylinder gasoline engines are available. Engine capacity is 1,598 cc, with maximum output of 118 hp on the MINI Cooper Convertible and 172 turbocharged horses on the MINI Cooper S Convertible with a top speed of 124 and 138 mph, respectively. Both engine variants are equipped with a number of technical features that maximize fuel economy and minimize emissions.

The MINI Cooper S Convertible and the MINI Cooper Convertible are equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with a six-speed automatic transmission available. Its sophisticated wheel suspension, precise electromechanical power steering, powerful brake system and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) – all standard features – allow the MINI Convertible to set a new standard for agility and safety.

While offering sporty performance and power, the MINI Convertible is very competitive when it comes to fuel consumption. EPA estimates of fuel consumption for the Cooper S Convertible are (city/highway/combined) 26/34/29 mpg (manual). MINI’s signature front-wheel drive, go-kart-like handling and refined suspension technology are tuned specifically to the MINI Convertible. The MINI Convertible provides significant safety features, including a crash-optimized body structure with reinforced A-pillars and side-sills, three-point inertia-reel seat belts on all seats with belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters at the front, frontal airbags, front head/thorax airbags integrated in the side of the seat’s backrest and a rollover sensor masterminding the rollover safety system. In addition, runflat tires and a Tire Pressure Monitor system are also standard.

The design of the MINI Convertible is the result of an evolutionary development process. The MINI Convertible’s chiseled body panels impart a powerful and dynamic look. The rear window is connected to the soft top by interior seals, allowing it to close flush with the surface of the roof. Made of glass, the rear window may be heated electrically whenever required to avoid any misting or icing effect.

Muscular, fast-revving and extremely efficient – these are the fortes of the two four-cylinder gasoline engines available in the MINI Convertible. Both power units are made of light alloy and come with a displacement of 1,598 cc and benefit from the latest in innovation and technology.

The four-cylinder light-alloy power units are built at the BMW Group’s Hams Hall Engine Plant in Great Britain.

MINI Cooper S Convertible: superior power and performance thanks to the Twin-Scroll turbocharger and direct gasoline injection.

The MINI Cooper S Convertible offers a more intense and thrilling experience of performance than ever before. As the more powerful of the two models, the MINI Cooper S Convertible comes with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 172 hp at 5,500 rpm with the help of a Twin-Scroll turbocharger and direct gasoline injection. In the range between 1,600 and 5,000 rpm, this unique power plant develops maximum torque of 177 lb ft that may be further increased briefly by the Overboost function to 192 lb ft.
The Twin-Scroll turbocharger effectively delivers a boost to the power and performance on the MINI Cooper S Convertible. The ducts of two cylinders at a time are separated from one another in the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger, serving to reduce exhaust gas counterpressure at low engine speeds in order to capitalize on the pulsating gas columns in the manifold. This enhances the turbocharger’s response and delivers a particularly spontaneous build-up of engine power.

As a result, the MINI Cooper S Convertible is virtually free of the “turbo lag” that used to be typical of a conventionally-designed turbocharged engine. Acceleration to 60 mph comes in just 7.0 seconds with the manual gearbox and 7.2 seconds with the automatic. Engine flexibility and response is truly impressive at high speeds, and the top speed of the car is an equally impressive 138 mph with the manual six-speed transmission.
The turbocharged engine featured in the MINI Cooper S Convertible benefits from the extra power of direct fuel injection using the common-rail principle. The stainless-steel common rail linking all cylinders is filled with fuel by a high-pressure pump driven by the intake camshaft. Injection valves positioned at the side of the cylinder head then deliver fuel within fractions of a second and in an exact dose from the common rail directly to the combustion chamber.

MINI Cooper Convertible: fully variable valve management for fresh performance.
The normally-aspirated power unit in the MINI Cooper Convertible combines fresh and sporting performance with truly outstanding economy. In this case maximum output of 118 hp comes at 6,000 rpm, with torque peaking at 114 lb-ft at 4,250 rpm.
The innovative technical features of this engine include fully variable valve management using VALVETRONIC technology.

Light, innovative, efficient: most advanced drive technology for reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

Both engines featured in the MINI Convertible are fitted crosswise at the front and convey their superior power to the front wheels. Composite (instead of cast) camshafts and the crankshaft are optimized for weight and part of the lightweight concept boasted by these all-aluminum power units.

Fuel consumption is further optimized by an oil pump with volume flow control and an electronically activated water pump for the coolant circuit, and both the Cooper and Cooper S are equipped standard with the latest innovations for reducing both fuel consumption and emissions.

Suspension technology on the MINI Convertible: go-kart feeling of the highest standard.
To a large extent, the unique position of the MINI Convertible in its segment is the result of the car’s exceptional driving characteristics. The open-air MINI offers the go-kart feeling so typical of the brand, now raised to an even higher standard of excellence.
The car’s suspension technology safely and smoothly converts the raw power of the engines into enhanced agility and precise handling—offering even greater driving pleasure in dynamic bends, on winding country roads and in city traffic. Apart from front-wheel drive and the low center of gravity, a relatively long wheelbase of 97.1″ and wide track measuring 57.4″ up front and 57.8″ at the rear also contribute to the agile and safe driving behavior of the MINI Convertible.

On the front axle, MacPherson struts ensure excellent wheel guidance at all times. The multi-link axle at the rear consistently guarantees optimum tire contact with the road through its elaborate kinematics, with aluminum longitudinal arms helping to keep weight to a minimum. Likewise, anti-rollbars reduce body sway to a very low level, again contributing to the agile and safe behavior of the car.

Electrical Power Steering (EPS) makes a significant contribution to the agility of the MINI Convertible, enhancing it to an even higher standard. Power assistance geared to road speed guarantees low steering forces when parking as well as a precise response at high speeds on the freeway. At the same time, EPS also enhances the efficiency of the car by consuming energy only when power assistance is really required or desired by the driver.

Apart from the sports-tuned suspension and powerful brakes, the MINI Convertible also comes with the most sophisticated driving stability systems. Sophisticated suspension technology and the most advanced driving stability systems in the MINI Convertible significantly reduce the risk of an accident. Suitable precautions are also taken for situations the driver is not able to influence. Passive safety measures include an increase in passenger cell stiffness by 10 percent over the former model, high load-resistant carrier structures and precisely defined deformation zones, which ensure appropriate diversion and absorption of impact energy in the event of a head-on, side or rear-end collision.

To meet the specific needs of an open-air car, the newly constructed floorpan, as well as A-pillars and rocker sills, are reinforced to an even higher standard than on the hardtop MINI—providing additional strength and stability.

The MINI Convertible comes as standard with frontal airbags and side head/torso airbags integrated in the outer flanks of the front seat backrest and protecting the head, the upper body and the hips of the occupants from injury in the event of a side-on collision. All four seats feature three-point inertia-reel seat belts with additional belt force limiters and optimized belt tensioners on the front seats.

All restraint systems are controlled by the car’s central safety electronics and are activated as a function of the type and severity of a collision. The safety system in the MINI Convertible also comprises a rollover sensor activating the newly-developed rollover protection bar as well as the belt latch tensioners and the head/torso airbags in the event of a rollover.

The interior: spacious, variable, sophisticated.

Depending on requirements, the rear seat backrests—50/50 split down the middle—can be folded completely. With the roof closed, this increases luggage compartment capacity to 23.3 cubic, feet. The maximum load, in turn, is 948 lb.

Like its predecessor, the MINI Convertible again comes with an Easy-Load system. With the rear lid swiveling down conveniently, the entire lid also serves as a storage tray able to carry a load of up to 176 lb.

A further important point is that the rear roof frame swivels up by approximately 35°, creating a generous luggage compartment opening for much easier loading of bulky objects.

Even in standard trim, the MINI Convertible clearly expresses its exceptional position as the world’s only premium convertible in its segment. Optional automatic air conditioning with a Convertible mode.

The MINI Convertible comes with either manual air conditioning (standard) or automatic climate control (optional). The automatic unit even comprises a special Convertible mode activated automatically as soon as the roof is opened. In this mode, the temperature set by the driver and passengers is consistently maintained even under the influence of the wind rushing by.

Whenever the a/c compressor is not used it is automatically switched off in the interest of enhanced efficiency. And in low outside temperatures the heating in the footwells is automatically intensified to provide a pleasant climate inside the car as quickly as possible. The Convertible mode is deactivated as soon as the driver closes the roof and the interior temperature required is set automatically through the usual process.

Top-end audio and navigation systems, integration of the Apple iPod and Apple iPhone.
Like the MINI Hardtop and the MINI Clubman, the MINI Convertible may also be upgraded with particularly sophisticated entertainment and navigation systems. The controls for the audio system and the 6.5-inch TFT colored display for the optional navigation unit are housed in the central circular instrument.

The audio system featured as standard comes with a CD player and six loudspeakers. When equipped with a navigation system, the display is positioned within the centrally-located speedometer. To choose the functions presented in the display the driver uses a special joystick on the center console.

External music players may be integrated without problems in the audio systems of the MINI Convertible. Using the standard AUX IN port featured, the driver or passengers are able, for example, to play music saved on an MP3 player via the audio system. A special interface for full integration of an Apple iPod is likewise available as an option, allowing the user to select music files via the audio controls.

The 2010 MINI Clubman

Stretching the wheelbase nearly nine and a half inches in comparison to the MINI Hardtop significantly enhances interior room and utility, as well as driver/passenger comfort and convenience for those who want more of this iconic British brand. And – in true MINI fashion – mixing the traditional with the modern results in both the car’s unmistakably MINI appearance and unique ways to access this interior: The tailgate carries forward the twin, outwardly hinged “Split Rear Barn Doors” found on the Clubman’s ancestors, while rear-seat passenger ingress and egress is eased through the rear-hinged “Clubdoor” incorporated in the car’s right side.

The 2010 MINI Cooper Clubman mirrors the latest MINI Cooper hardtop – both inside and out, in terms of equipment – from the radiator grill to the B pillars. This means the two variants share the 172-horsepower turbocharged engine of the MINI Cooper S and the 118-hp, naturally aspirated four-cylinder powerplant of the MINI Cooper, both driving the front wheels. Inside, the instrument panel, seats (with the exception of some upholstery colors and materials as well as interior trim colors), comfort and convenience features and switch gear that have already been made familiar. And they share the chassis components, as well as the soul, which have earned the MINI accolades on its fun-to-drive, go-kart-like handling characteristics.

Exclusive to the MINI Clubman is the area behind the front seats and the number of doors providing access to the interior. Stretching the Clubman 9.4 inches and the wheelbase 3.2 inches results in a very different environment for passengers and all of life’s precious cargo. Almost all of the extra wheelbase is translated into additional leg room for rear passengers, and the revised body work provides a bit more shoulder room for them as well. The most dramatic transformation comes in terms of luggage space: the Clubman offers 61 percent more space (9.18 versus 5.7 cubic feet) with the rear seats up, or 37 percent more (32.8 versus 24 cubic feet) with both seats folded. And the Clubman offers an optional flat-luggage-floor system which also brings a covered storage bin between the Split Rear Barn Doors and the seatbacks.

Those rear split-doors offer the most striking visual differentiator for the Clubman from the MINI Hardtop. In keeping with the marque’s heritage, the 2010 MINI Clubman’s rear look is modeled along the design of the rear doors found in the Austin Mini Countryman, Morris Minor Traveller and the Mini Clubman Estate from the 1960s. The MINI Clubman eschews the more common hatch for a pair of Split Rear Barn Doors hinged on the outer edge of the C-pillars, thus providing a wide, open access to the luggage area. Opening/closing operation of the doors is very specific: the right, or main, door must be opened prior to the left one (and closed in reverse order) and the doors effortlessly glide open with the aid of a pair of gas struts.

A similar sequential operation allows for the opening/closing of the Clubdoor which provides a more convenient means for rear passengers to enter or leave the MINI Clubman cabin. Hinged at the rear on the right side, the Clubdoor is integrated into the right-side B-pillar. Compared to the MINI hardtop, with the Clubdoor open, passengers have four times more space to enter the rear seats of the Clubman (when the front seat is in the easy-entry position).

Once inside, all four occupants have their own three-point seatbelts and are further protected by six standard airbags. Strong, stable body construction provides the MINI Clubman with a platform for a high level of crash protection. In the event of a collision, optimized load paths within the body structure serve to effectively divert forces acting on the car, despite the short overhangs front and rear.

Active safety is enhanced in critical driving situations by the standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Corner Brake Control (CBC) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), standard on both Clubman models. Additionally, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), a sportier mode of DSC, is optional on both models.

The Brake Assist on both models detects emergency operation of the brakes and builds up maximum brake pressure very quickly. MINI’s Hill Assist start-off assistance is featured in conjunction with DSC. The system continues to hold the brakes for a maximum of three seconds after letting off the brake pedal and before the clutch is engaged. This feature is beneficial when setting off on an uphill gradient to prevent the car from rolling back.

Driving Fun Remains Centerpiece of MINI Clubman’s Mission

A low center of gravity, wide track and the wheels moved to the extreme corners of the car guarantee agile and nimble driving behavior. The structure of the body shell, beyond providing the basis for superior crash protection in this segment, creates a solid platform for the suspension pieces. The front suspension features MacPherson-type springs over struts, ensuring excellent wheel guidance, keeping the steering smooth and responsive, and remain unaffected by engine power both in accelerating or braking. The five-link central-arm rear axle offers optimum road contact, again regardless of conditions.
Compared with the MINI Cooper Clubman, the MINI Cooper S Clubman has a more sporting suspension, and as an option, both models are available with sports suspension for an even higher standard of driving enjoyment.

The EPS (Electrical Power Steering) helps to make the MINI Clubman even more nimble and agile on the road. Speed-related assistance ensures low steering forces when parking and precise control at high speeds. In conjunction with the standard Sport button, EPS even offers a special sport mode specifically increasing steering feedback for an even more direct driving experience.

The two four-cylinder engines carried over from the hardtops provide the performance to enhance the driving experience. The turbocharged 1.6-liter version in the Cooper S Clubman produces 172 horsepower, eclipsing the magical “100-hp-per-liter” measure revered by enthusiasts. This translates into zero-to-60-miles-per-hour acceleration in 7.0 seconds and the same top speed, 139 miles per hour, as the six-speed manual hardtop version. The naturally-aspirated engine in the Cooper Clubman, also 1.6 liters, features variable valve control and accelerates this agile athlete to 60 mph in 8.9 seconds with a top speed of 125 mph.

These engines are designed for overall efficiency, which means high performance, low weight, low emissions and very competitive fuel economy. Both MINI Clubman models offer superior fuel economy, with the MINI Cooper S Clubman having 2010 fuel economy ratings of 34 mpg Highway, 26 mpg City and a combined rating of 29 mpg. The MINI Cooper Clubman is even more efficient with preliminary ratings of 36 mpg Highway, 28 mpg City and 32 mpg combined.

Composite – instead of conventional cast – camshafts and a weight-optimized crankshaft are part of the lightweight concept of the aluminum alloy power units. Fuel consumption, in turn, is optimized by a volume flow-controlled oil pump and an electronically controlled water pump for the coolant circuit – two technical features previously limited to larger and more expensive model segments.

The MINI Cooper Clubman and the MINI Cooper S Clubman both come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but can be ordered with an optional six-speed automatic transmission controlled by either a console-mounted selector, or on the Cooper S, with Formula 1-style steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Unique, characteristic design with striking MINI features

The two versions of the Clubman are virtually identical in their design and body structure to the MINI Cooper Hardtop up to the B-pillar, all the classic design icons of the MINI coming through in the model. At the front these include the large, round headlights supplemented by the round parking-light units (which include, when fitted, the optional fog lamps) and hexagonal radiator grill. On the front flanks are the distinctive side direction indicators.

Seen from the side, the MINI Cooper Clubman retains the firm, taut and striking look of the Cooper Hardtop, despite the added length and revised C-pillar design, resting powerfully on its wheels in a look well-known to friends and aficionados of the brand as the “stance on the wheels.” Another characteristic is the seemingly uninterrupted “flow” of windows around the car, adorning the MINI with a look of having a complete, 360-degree band of glass, which is accentuated by a chrome band extends around the entire car at shoulder level, helping to create an impression of a greenhouse “floating” above the lower section of the car. Measuring the same width and virtually the same height as the Hardtop, the MINI Cooper Clubman, with its low-slung overall appearance and compact proportions emphasized by the tires-at-the-out-edge design, creates the same nimble and dynamic impression as all other members of the MINI family.

The rear-light clusters are kept as small as possible to maximize the opening of the split-doors as well as complementing the overall style of the car. Thoroughly unique amongst the MINI models, the Cooper Clubman is nonetheless a MINI; there is no other car offered with a rear appearance like it!

MINI Clubman drivers who are looking to transport their sports equipment in style (bicycles, snowboards, surfboards etc.) or simply wish to have an extra sporty look on their car, can include optional factory Clubman Roof Rails or a Rear Roof Spoiler (options cannot be combined together). Based on the MINI Cooper Hardtop with its extremely agile performance and typical go-kart feeling, the MINI Cooper Clubman is a unique and emotional concept taking typical features of MINI design and carrying them to a new and different segment of the market.

Unique proportions underline the individual, sporting, active and masculine character of the MINI Cooper Clubman. The rear-hinged Clubdoor, the two-piece split-door at the rear and wheelbase extended 3.15 inches beyond the standard MINI, make the Clubman quite unmistakable.

A wide track and very short body overhangs underline the typical posture of the car, its “stance on the wheels” characteristic of the brand. Indeed, it is fair to say that the MINI Cooper Clubman “stands like a rock” on its wheels at all four corners. This overall impression is further enhanced by the plastic frame extending around the entire body and bordering on the front and rear air dams as well as the wheel arches and side-sills at the bottom.

The almost vertical C-pillars and the body overhang at the rear extended by 6.3 inches versus the Hardtop highlight the greater functional value of the 2010 MINI Cooper Clubman and create proportions nevertheless still typical of MINI. The C-pillars, in a different and conspicuous color, help create a look of balance throughout the car from front to rear.

The rear end: split-door and rear lights integrated into the body

The rear end of the MINI Cooper Clubman is characterized by parallel, horizontal lines appearing clearly and distinctively from the vertical C-pillars. These lines serve to split the body into individual sections, becoming more slender and narrow, step-by-step as they move up. Such an arrangement of contours, referred to by the designer as a “waterfall line,” highlight the car’s low center of gravity, guiding the eyes of the beholder towards the wheels.

The frame formed by the C-pillars together with the upper edge of the bumper generates a clear visual signal design statement. Complementing the body color, this rear frame or surround is finished in black or silver metallic; the C-pillar frame and the split-door giving the MINI Clubman an absolutely unmistakable look from behind.
The MINI Cooper S Clubman has three distinct rear features differentiating it from the Cooper Clubman. The hood scoop, appliqués flanking each side of the license-plate holder are in a grid pattern (mimicking the radiator grill) and the dual tailpipes are split, with one on either side of the body.

The front end: distinguishing the individual model variants

Seen from the front, the 2010 MINI Cooper Clubman is virtually identical to the MINI Hardtop, the lone difference being the contour of the roofline. This means the MINI Cooper Clubman, complete with the homogeneous hexagon radiator grill and large round headlights, has the distinctive “face” of the brand. Other common features are the direction indicators integrated in the headlights as well as the parking- light units beneath the headlight units, which also accommodate the optional fog lamps.

The front end of the car serves to distinguish the individual Cooper and Cooper S models. The MINI Cooper S Clubman stands out through two design features visualizing the power and performance of its turbocharged engine. First, the powerdome – the curved section of the engine compartment lid – is 20 millimeters or 0.79-inches higher. Second, the size of the bottom air intake is highlighted by a hexagon grid net paralleling the look of the radiator grill with its chrome surround. A further differentiator is the air-intake in the hood of the MINI Cooper S Clubman.

On the MINI Cooper Clubman, the radiator grill boasts a chrome frame and three horizontal chrome-plated crossbars. The edges of the lower air intake are slightly curved upward slight, almost giving the MINI Cooper Clubman a smile on its face and creating an elegant, likeable touch at the front.

Chrome features emphasizing the premium character of the car are common to both variants of the 2010 MINI Cooper Clubman. These design elements include the headlights, the radiator-grill surround, the strip extending around the entire car at the shoulder line and the door handles.

High-Tech Power Units for Greater Driving Performance
The MINI Cooper S Clubman and MINI Cooper Clubman are powered by two different four-cylinder engines boasting a wide range of innovative details. Both power units are made of lightweight aluminum alloy and displace 1.6 liters, benefiting from the decades of know-how in engine development and racing technology.

The MINI Cooper S Clubman features a 172 hp turbocharged engine with direct gasoline injection, while maximum output of the naturally aspirated power unit in the MINI Cooper Clubman is 118 hp, boasting fully variable valve management based on VALVETRONIC technology.

The 1.6-liter turbocharged power unit featured in the MINI Cooper S Clubman offers impressive performance on the road. The maximum output of 172 hp and specific output of 109.5 hp/liter are impressive figures for a four-cylinder, light-alloy power unit in this class.

The MINI Cooper S Clubman achieves its peak output at an engine speed of 5,500 rpm. Maximum torque is 177 lb-ft and is maintained consistently throughout the speed range from 1,600–5,000 rpm. When accelerating, torque is briefly increased even further to 192 lb-ft by the “overboost” function, an increase in boost pressure (from 0.8 to 1.0 bar), which gives the MINI Cooper S Clubman even more powerful “punch.” And overboost acts exclusively on engine torque, not on overall engine output. The MINI Cooper S Clubman responds instantaneously to the driver’s commands, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds with a top speed of 139 mph.

Like the naturally aspirated version in the MINI Cooper Clubman, the turbocharged power unit offers the highest standard of engine construction. The four valves per cylinder are controlled by two overhead camshafts, roller-type drag arms optimized for minimum friction, and hydraulic valve compensation elements. The outlet valves are filled with sodium in order to meet the greater cooling requirements of a turbocharged power unit. The intake camshaft comes with infinite phase adjustment setting the engine’s valve timing to the driver’s respective power and performance requirements. The result is optimum output and torque on low fuel consumption and emissions reduced to a minimum.
Fuel is injected into the turbocharged four-cylinder by means of common-rail-direct-injection technology. The stainless-steel common rail connecting all cylinders is filled with fuel under high pressure by a pump at the rear of the intake camshaft. Injection valves positioned at the side in the cylinder head deliver fuel within fractions of a second and in exactly the right amounts from the rail directly to the combustion chambers, four valve pockets and the combustion trough in the middle of each piston ensuring optimum stratification of the homogeneous fuel/air mixture with a lambda factor of 1.0. Running in cast-iron sleeves and operating with a compression ratio of 10.5: 1, relatively high for a turbocharged engine, the pistons are cooled by splash oil.

Featuring a twin-scroll turbocharger, the MINI Cooper S Clubman comes with another feature unique in this segment. In both the exhaust gas manifold and the turbocharger itself, the ducts leading to two cylinders at a time are separated from one another. Reducing exhaust-gas counter pressure at low engine speeds, this arrangement capitalizes on the dynamic effect of the pulsating gas columns within the manifold in a special process enhancing the response of the turbocharger and accelerating its charge rotors to an optimum speed of rotation right from the start at low engine speeds.
The charge pressure, limited by a wastegate to 0.8 bar, starts to build at an engine speed of 1,400 rpm, almost eliminating the “turbo lag” typical of conventional turbocharged engines. As a result, the MINI Cooper S Clubman accelerates smoothly and instantaneously; the 1.6-liter turbocharged power unit demonstrating the same kind of response and behavior as a larger normally aspirated engine.

MINI Cooper Clubman: a powerful but fuel-efficient normally-aspirated engine
Also displacing 1.6 liters, the MINI Cooper Clubman engine combines superior driving pleasure with truly outstanding economy. Maximum output of 118 hp comes at 6,000 rpm, with the torque curve reaching a significant 103 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm and continuing to a peak of 114 lb-ft at 4,250 rpm. The wide, useful torque curve is an example this engine combines superior power and performance with equally superior fuel economy in a compact and highly efficient power unit. The 2010 MINI Cooper Clubman accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 8.9 seconds and has a top speed of 125 mph.

Variable-valve control based on VALVETRONIC technology is one of the innovative technical features incorporated into the four-cylinder engine. With this valve management, the stroke and opening period of the intake valves are adjusted within fractions of a second to the power requirements; the camshaft acting on the valves not directly via a drag arm, but rather through an additional intermediate lever adjusted in its pivot point by an eccentric shaft driven by an electric motor. Depending on the position of this lever arm, intake valve lift is varied infinitely between 0.2 and 9.5 millimeters, the entire process of changing over from minimum to maximum valve lift taking about 300 milliseconds.
Over and above variable management of valve lift on the intake side, valve timing on the intake and outlet sides is spread out variably as a function of engine speed. Again, this is also an infinite process switching over when necessary from one extreme to the other in 300 milliseconds. This speed and fast reaction is ensured by a high-performance 32-bit processor integrated in the engine control system. Variable valve lift and speed-dependant camshaft control serve to optimize the torque curve and the engine’s power output.

The engines featured in the MINI Cooper S Clubman and MINI Cooper Clubman are built in the BMW Group’s Engine Plant in Hams Hall, Great Britain.

Manual and Automatic Transmission – Precise, Spontaneous

Both the 2010 MINI Cooper Clubman and MINI Cooper S Clubman come with a standard six-speed manual gearbox and offer an optional six-speed automatic transmission.
The manual gearbox comes in two different configurations: on the MINI Cooper S Clubman, the first two gears are synchronized by means of double cones, while the MINI Cooper Clubman uses carbon friction linings for the same purpose. All gears on both versions are in helical design and all – including reverse – feature synchromesh, thus allowing for light, precise and efficient gear changes.

The driver of an automatic-equipped 2010 MINI Cooper S is able to shift gears by means of Formula 1-inspired paddles on the steering wheel, allowing him or her to keep both hands on the wheel even during gearshifts. In the automatic mode, the transmission shifts gears according to the driver’s commands with virtually no interruption of power and pulling force for both the Cooper and Cooper S. This is made possible by a torque converter clutch that closes shortly after the car has started to move – an operating mode combining supreme comfort with a sporting and crisp gearshift. When equipped with the manual transmission, the MINI Cooper S Clubman is available with an optional mechanical limited-slip differential that minimizes the drive wheels from spinning on slippery surfaces or in bends. To set off different frictional coefficients, the differential instantaneously feeds more engine power to the drive wheel with better traction.

Use of aluminum longitudinal arms help keep the components light, while anti-roll bars reduce body sway to a minimum, making additional contribution to the car’s agile and safe driving behavior.

Brake and electronic-driving systems

The braking systems are designed to work in concert with the chassis and engine. Vented front disc brakes, 11.57 inches on the Cooper S Clubman and 11.02 inches on the Cooper Clubman, are complemented by 10.2-inch discs at the rear. The fade-free brakes of both models are enhanced and supported by an anti-lock brake system (ABS), electronic Brakeforce Distribution (BFD) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC). The brake assistant in the MINI recognizes emergency braking maneuvers reliably and in good time, immediately building up maximum brake pressure whenever required to keep stopping distances as short as possible.

Standard on all 2010 MINIs, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) offers additional safety in critical situations. Intervening in the brakes as required or reducing engine power whenever necessary, DSC prevents the car from possibly swerving out of control.

Also available is Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), a sportier mode of DSC. Like DSC, DTC controls wheel spin by reducing engine power or individual brake application as needed, however, it is less intrusive and restores power quicker—allowing more vehicle slide and yaw angle before making corrections. Additionally, part of DTC is the Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC), which works when DSC and DTC are off and only during acceleration. EDLC controls wheel spin while accelerating like DTC, but does not reduce engine power and applies the individual brakes to control the spinning wheel, with no affect vehicle yaw or stability.

Yet another feature is Hill Assist start-off assistance on uphill gradients. In conjunction with DSC, Hill Assist activates the brake system when setting off on an uphill gradient and thus prevents the car from rolling back.

Runflat tires standard on the MINI Cooper S Clubman

The MINI Cooper Clubman comes standard with 15-inch light-alloy rims and 175/65 R 15 tires. The MINI Cooper S Clubman features 16-inch light-alloy wheels and 195/55 R 16 runflat tires standard. Both models are available with optional 16-inch (Cooper) and 17-inch wheels (Cooper S) with a five-star Pace Spoke design exclusive to the MINI Cooper S Clubman.

The MINI Clubman models boast runflat tires as yet another standard feature, modified in this case to reflect the suspension set-up of the MINI. Thanks to their failsafe running characteristics, these tires allow the driver to go on motoring even when a tire is completely flat, covering a distance of up to 90 miles at a maximum speed of 50 mph.

Attention to detail in design of the body, especially on the right side – where the Clubdoor is featured – results in symmetrical crash worthiness on both sides. A further safety feature of the MINI Cooper Clubman is the rear-hinged Clubdoor, which cannot be opened if the right-front door is closed, thus preventing any inadvertent opening of the door from inside.

Six airbags featured standard.

Six airbags come as standard in a package comprising frontal, side and curtain head airbags for both the driver and front passenger. The frontal airbags inflate as a function of the type and severity of an accident. The two side airbags are integrated in the side supports of the front seats and effectively protect the driver and front passenger from thorax injury. The curtain head airbags, as the name indicates, inflate when required as large “curtains” coming down from the roof lining, thus offering the occupants both front and rear protection from head injury. Three-point seat belts are fitted on all four seats, featuring belt latch tensioners, belt-force limiters and belt-warning signals for the front seats.

Crash energy is diverted into the floor through the special design of the front axle subframe. Together with the structure, this system effectively absorbs impact energy, keeping forces acting on the car away from the extremely stiff passenger cell. So in a severe collision or should the car roll over, the passenger cell is able to retain its function as a survival area for the occupants. Effective diversion and absorption of impact energy and the stable passenger cell are the starting point for the optimum safety offered by the restraint systems featured as standard in the MINI, with all of these components and systems interacting for optimum safety under all conditions.

The Mobile Standard Production Cells (Mobi-Cells) developed by the BMW Group, a significant innovation employed in the 15,000-square-meter body shop, increase production flexibly and quickly whenever required. This makes production of the new MINI highly flexible, reflecting the standards of the BMW Group’s Customer-Oriented Sales and Production Process (KOVP). This flexibility allows the customer to change the configuration of his or her car up to six days prior to the start of assembly, despite a choice of more than 370 features and options in the interior, more than 300 variants on the exterior, and the approximately 2,000 components which go into every MINI.
