One of the worst kept secrets of the MINI world has been the Cooper SD. We reported on it almost a year ago and have even shown you pictures of the engine. Now MINI has been caught red-handed by Worldcarfans.com with a pre-production model out on the streets of Munich.
First some facts. This engine is a modified version of the 2.0 turbo diesel found in the BMW 1 and 3 Series. We expect that it will produce around 141 hp (143 PS) and 221 ft lbs of torque. That’s around 20 ft lbs more than a JCW. Most news outlets are reporting that it will have some unique bodywork. We believe (based on photos and sources) that there will be no difference in the way this car looks over the standard Cooper S with the exception of the lower plastic grille. In an effort to allow for more cooling MINI has opened the mesh pattern up further. Otherwise the little “D” badge on the back will be the only way to tell the two apart.
Like all other flavors of MINI diesels, don’t expect this one to make it to the US.

Having driven a R56 Cooper diesel for a while, I can say that the torque is better than a R53 Cooper S. My only reservation about diesels is that when they get to peak revs the acceleration dies – this makes an automatic shift more sense especially in sport mode.
If you can put up with the different engine noise and smell of the exhaust fumes (especially in your garage),
the diesel S should be a little rocket.
But you got to do the math of purchase price, cost per gallon, any road taxes for licenses or fuel, and compare that to petrol costs.

Knowing BMW/MIN overlords (love that!) keep an ear to the ground, I’m chiming in again with the obligatory request: Please bring the diesel engine to the States.

We’ve had a TDI in the family since 2003. Incredible engine.

Over the course of the last 5-6 years we’ve detailed many of the reasons why diesels won’t be coming to MINI in the US anytime soon. There’s detailed info from MINI themselves as well as some insider info by us. Doa search or look at the “diesel” category on MF.

@Jas, link for the MINI Tattoo?

There are several tatoo options and they all look equally bad. They should now be on the MINI USA Configurator.

According to our contact person, Mini NL! It will be the same. 1.6 diesel engine which is recently introduced. The DS will get approx. 160 hp. No figures about the torque yet.

@Jerry… I think you will find that the diesel engine emits less of the bad naughty stuff than the petrol engine.
One of the things apart from the smell I don’t like is the slow revving engine that diesels sound like. Don’t expect the exhaust note to be all inspiring.
I am always amazed at the number of MF readers who say that they have a VW TDI in their garage as well.
If its good enough for VW and others to bring diesel cars to the USA, why not the BMW Group?

My 2009 US-spec VW TDI engine (with particulate filter) has ZERO smell, even with engine running in a garage.

If BMW imports into the US eventually they will have a particulate filter. Finding room for these emissions devices is one reason I don’t expect to see these here until the next body redesign.

@Jerry, there might be a green component to a diesel MINI, but there are a lot of other reasons to love diesels. The torque makes a turbo diesel a monster in the mountains of Colorado and the fuel-efficiency can’t be ignored.

Just like there’s not one carmaker to chose from, not all of us want the same motor.

One of the main (and most dissapointing) reasons this will not come stateside is the lack of technician machinery support (IE service mechanics) for diesel at Mini dealerships. I wish that was different and that they could use BMW support for now, but they won’t. I’d love a diesel Mini to go with my diesel jeep. Where is the love BMW?

Like others have done here, I’ll reiterate my desire for a diesel powered mini in the U.S. I understand the reasons why these won’t make it across the pond, but I certainly think there is a HUGE market for it that’s only been partially tapped by VW.

Having abandoned my R56 for an Audi A3 TDI, I have only a few regrets — speed and engine performance are not one of them. One, I missed the stick shift (the A3 TDI only comes with DSG). Two is the go-cart handling characteristics and agility of the MINI.

Otherwise, the fuel economy is great, engine performance is great (too bad A3 is a very heavy car), handling is above average. It does have a slight diesel exhaust smell, but not anything less pleasant than gasoline exhaust smell. There is no black smoke or anything like that — in fact, I noticed the other day that the chrome exhaust tip doesn’t ever get any black residue on it like my R56 did. It does sound/feel a bit out of breath on the highways, but nothing that would prevent it from quickly accelerating way past the speed limit.

Anyways, if BMW/MINI does decide to bring diesel MINIs here, I will run out and get one right NOW. I’ll keep praying for one….

USA! USA! USA!

Whats the decal sticker on the boot and rf wing? I want one.

I want that decal on the boot for my Checkmate.

That is the new mini tattoo. There are two different designs. Like bonnet stripes

Yo quiero 135d hatch por favor. Es mejor!

I wonder what the exhaust note will be like on this, I guess no where near as nice, or as sporty sounding, as the S or JCW.

Overlords > oberherren.
Oberherren > upper mens.
Lost in translation somewhere.

I’ll say it again, too…MINI, please bring it over here! I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

For those of us that get our high-RPM kicks elsewhere, it would be the ultimate commuter car.

lollers.. what if someone just stuck that badge on there and it’s a regular S.

Just like sticking a type R sticker on a honda civic =P

(I know it probably is real – but what if?)

So what’s faster? This or a gasoline powered “S”?

“So what’s faster? This or a gasoline powered “Sâ€?”

maybe this up until 30mph. Torque rules at lower speeds but the HP is gonna take over at higher speeds.

BMW just posted information about the MINI D’s fuel efficiency. The MINI Cooper D gets about 61MPG US, 73MPG Imperial. Other models mentioned:
