The four door MINI. Or is it the five door MINI? It depends on which side of the pond you’re from it seems. But the bigger question is, just how big is this thing? We’ve seen publications (who have yet to see it in person) devote entire articles to it being too big and at least one that has driven it write about it being too small. Which is it?
While we won’t be driving it for another month, we can now give you plenty of detail on MINI’s latest four door five seater. For one it’s 4005 mm long, 105 mm less than the Countryman. The wheelbase has been extended in the MINI 5 door by 72 millimetres to 2 567 millimetres, while the track is identical to that of the 3-door model. Unlike the Countryman, MINI has created a four door that should handle for the most part like a MINI. Consider this more inline with the R55 Clubman in the way it had 95% of the R56’s gokart feel.
Interior comfort has been enhanced due to the longer wheelbase. Rear passengers now have 72 millimetres foot space and legroom available to them, while the increased space also provides for a third seat in the back row as well as more comfortable access. The increased vehicle height can be felt in an additional 15 mm of headroom. Meanwhile the car’s interior width at elbow height is now increased by 61 millimetres. The luggage compartment has a volume of 278 litres – an increase of 67 litres or around 30 per cent as compared to the 3-door model.
From a packaging stand-point the F55 isn’t going to be MINI’s family hauler. That honor will go to the redesigned (and noticeably larger and wider) Clubman that starts production next June. Instead this is MINI’s answer to those who’ve wanted just a little more utility out of the standard MINI without resorting to something like the Countryman.
We’ll have much more on the new F55 Four Door MINI including a massive 340 photo gallery and videos shortly. In the meantime click through for the full press release and our best look at the new MINI.

Who measures a car in millimeters? :-)

Those back door openings look pretty tiny.

MM to inches….just multiply the MM by 25.4 to get inches. If you compare those back door openings on the F55 to the entrance space between the seat & door jam entrance to the back seat on a 3 door F56, they becomes very large. And the extra 2.5″ more rear leg room is also a plus.

Spin it however you want, all those doors still have framed windows and that’s icky.

When the doors are closed, those framed windows look the same as the unframed ones. So unless you’re driving around with open doors, I don’t see a problem with framed windows. Being a 4 door, are the windows on the Countryman framed or unframed?

Ask those that need the use of the back seats but hate the lousy access on the 3 door, what they think of having an F55 5 door, most might prefer it…especially if they want to stay with a smaller MINI than upsizing to a Countryman.

Found it interesting that the length of the roofs on the F56 & F55 are the same. The only difference is the increase rake of the back hatch on the F55 which adds to the boot space & rear seat legroom…both positive moves. You may hate the car, but I predict many will go for it over the F56 for the extra room without having to jump up to the Countryman.

When the doors are closed, those framed windows look the same as the unframed ones.

Yeah, but frameless windows is about the feel getting in and out with the doors open, not the visual aesthetics while the doors are closed.

who measures in mm’s – most of the World except USA and UK.

I was thinking of a dark blue w/color matching roof, but that black-over-red with the Roulette wheels looks pretty nice.

“SHOULD I BUY ONE?
I wouldn’t in this specification. Whether you should at lesser specifications and price points is TBC.”
-AUTOCAR

I didn’t think I’d like this, but it does look better than the coupe. I still think the clubman will look best, bigger ones look better with that huge front end.

Reposting this from a while back… probably useful again now.

Visual comparison of F56 and F55 4-door:
http://imgur.com/a/1P04V

Interesting that the only profile difference between the 2 is the increased rake to the rear hatch for the added rear seat & boot space room.

Side note:
You know how leaving off the “www.” in the address bar for Motoringfile used to give an “Error establishing database connection”? Well, it’s back… but this time it happens when you leave the “www.” on the URL; not off.

yes, now the error is backwards, wtf!

Too small? or too big? Seems you can’t please everyone. I can get in and out of the rear doors better than a 1 series BMW – in fact I think the MINI has more legroom.
Now a 4-dr has finally arrived, out come the naysayers.
The USA is the biggest MINI market, so design is being tailored to you the USA buyers.
So vote with your check books…

I’ve seen a fair amount of F56’s in person now. I can confidently say, how much i like the 3cyl Cooper front-end but truly dislike the Cooper S front. in every other generation i’ve preferred the S,… does anyone else feel the 3cyl cooper is the better design?

I have always preferred the slat grill on every generation of the MINI.

Unquestionably. It’s been that way since the R53 for me.
