Convincing James May to Buy an Electric MINI Cooper SE
James May is a curmudgeon. And we love that. All of us who got to know him on Top Gear and now on the Grand Tour (and sometimes at Drive Tribe) know him to be an astute judge of all things cars and always ready with an opinion. So what happens with his colleague decides to convince him to buy an all electric Mini Cooper SE? Fireworks.
Beyond James May finding some faults, this video is another solid review for the electric MINI Cooper SE. In our own review (written and video) we found the car to be a great combination of performance, efficiency and value. Yes that last word might surprise, but that’s been one of its biggest selling points in our eyes (at least with tax incentives).
Speaking of electric MINIs, what happened to the hybrid Countryman? I can find no mention of it on either minusa.com or mini.com, and it’s not available in the online builder. Seems like they’ve swept it under the rug in advance of the Cooper SE launch.
Sorry I disagree on the ride height. It’s very noticeable and once you realize why it was done (they raised the whole chassis, not just the suspension, in order to fit the batteries) it makes you realize just what a compromised design this is.

It’s been a big success and will continue until the end of the model production in 2022.
I looked yesterday as well. It has vanished from the mini USA website.
