2025 MINI Cooper’s Three Cylinder Engine May Be Dead

The costs of offering both an all new electric model range next to revised ICE models means MINI is having to make some compromises. One of them might just be the number of engines available within the MINI line-up. More specifically the MINI’s 3 cylinder petrol powered engine. Our sources are telling us that it may be eliminated in an effort to simplify the line-up and reduce costs.

Of course there will be a standard Cooper or Countryman so what will replace it? According to sources MINI will only offer the 2.0L B48 engine in all of its petrol powered models moving forward. This will allow for greater economies of scale as it readies the B48 to become Euro 7 compliant for 2025.
Along with the single engine, MINI will also be offering a single transmission. Dead is the much loved manual and in its place is a revised dual clutch that MINI currently offers. The revised dual clutch transmission is just like the one offered in current Cooper and Cooper S models combining two partial transmissions in a single housing to create smooth and quick shifts.

The good news is that this will mean more power. The 134 hp F56 Cooper will be heavily revised (as the F66) for 2024 and will get 155 hp. Torque figures are unknown at this time but expect that to rise as well. The downside will likely be more weight as the 1.5 liter 3 cylinder enjoyed a small but important weight advantage over the 2.0 liter 4 cylinder MINIs.

And as you can see below in our exclusive look at the next generation MINI Cooper models, there will still be a lot to choose from across the internal combustion range from MINI – as long as you like 2.0 liter engines. Most models will receive a notable power increase with the exception of the Euro Countryman JCW and the F66 JCW. Also note that the US will not be getting the Countryman C and will only receive the S and JCW.
