Having had our JCW Clubman for eight months it was finally time to make it legal in the eyes of the law. In the state of Illinois that meant finally mounting a front license plate. However like most of you, we have a reluctance to drill holes in our MINI. Enter the CravenSpeed Platypus License Plate Mount.

If you’re used to getting MINI accessories from Amazon or worse Temu, you’ll hate CravenSpeed. They offer a range of beautifully designed, over engineered accessories, made in Oregon and built to likely outlast your MINI. That last part is key when you’re cross-shopping as CravenSpeed parts may not be the cheapest, but they are by designed to be nothing less than the best quality products on the market. Case in point their Gemini Mount we reviewed last year.

Our goals with a front license plate mount was simple. Something that could be inserted into the tow-hook, was minimally designed, incredibly robust and was made locally. The Platypus License Plate Mount appeared to check all of those boxes.

The mount is made from 12 gauge steel, powder coated to protect against the elements and stand-up to collisions. And the second you get it in hand, you understand just how robust that 12 gauge steel makes this mount. In other words this is the opposite of buying a MINI accessory from Amazon or Temu.

The first thing you see when you open the box is thoughtfully designed packaging that includes almost everything you need for installation. While install is very straightforward, CravenSpeed links out to online instructions that fill any gaps you might have.

One thing you notice right away is that this thing is designed for MINIs. Unlike universal mounts, the Platypus is custom-designed for specific makes and models, ensuring a snug and stable fit. This precision reduces the likelihood of issues such as plate vibrations or covering front sensors or even air intakes.

Speaking of parking distance control (PDC), the Clubman’s are uniquely positioned and force the plate to be mounted a little higher than most MINIs unless you use one of CravenSpeed’s “blinder” which switches off the offending sensor. Ultimately we chose to keep it higher as we liked the production it offered in the hand-to-hand combat that is Chicago parking.

Also of note is the quick-release mechanism allows users to remove the plate in under a minute, making it practical for car washes or other scenarios where the plate might get in the way. It’s also compatible with most MINIs in the same generation. Case in point, our F54 mount works perfectly on all F56 models.

Early Verdict

If you’re looking for an ultimate, over-engineered license plate mount that’s built to withstand the elements, is easily removable, and boasts a minimalist design, the CravenSpeed Platypus License Plate Mount is an excellent choice. Priced at $100, it’s not the cheapest option on the market, but it’s undoubtedly the best license plate mount we’ve seen firsthand.

You can find the Platypus Mount at CravenSpeed.com for $100.
