Today begins what we’re calling DIY week here at MotoringFile. Every day this week we’ll be featuring official retrofit PDFs for new R56 accessories. Today, we’re starting with the much talked about portable MINI/Garmin Navigation system. You may have read our earlier story on this accessory a few weeks ago where we strongly recommended against the accessory. The reason? It comes down to price. However, what we do recommend is the mounting system that is seen in this installation PDF. If you do have a Garmin Nuvi 360 or are planning on getting one, this PDF has your name all over it. And yes, word has it ths mount works with the R50, R52 an R53 as well as the R56.

I’m kinda confused here on what ‘mount’ you’re talking about… This is a box inside of the passenger’s side panel (such as the burshed metal panel) … if you have the iPod adapter installed, this is taken up with that …. how can i use this to mount a Garmin??
I have a 680 and i am currently mounting on the speedo (with the window mount) … and im looking for a better solution … but im not sure if the Wide screen will work with the Mini Mount that comes with the Mini Garmin (the 360/350 Mini model available at the dealers). I can get the mount only for $150 parts … but i think (from the picture) that the widescreen fo the 680 would hit the tachometer.
Any ideas?
PDF link has been fixed – you may want to click again.
Does anyone have pictures of this installed?
Never mind. Just found one in the “Which nav should I get” post.
I believe the brackets differ slightly between the R50/R53 and the R56. There at least different part #’s for them.
MINI R56 (2007 Cooper/Cooper S)
Complete kit (with MINI branded Nuvi)- $750
PN: 65 90 0 429 399
Installation kit only (use your own Nuvi) – $175.
PN: 65 90 0 428 283
MINI R50/R52/R53 (2002-2006 Cooper/Cooper S and 2007 Convertible)
Complete kit – (with MINI branded Nuvi) $750
PN: 65 90 0 429 400
Installation kit only (use your own Nuvi) – $175.
PN: 65 90 0 428 284
I’m not seeing the $300 price premium that Gabe mentions in the original post. If the complete kit is $750 retail, and the Nuvi 360 sells for $450 from reputable sources, and the installation kit is $175, that’s roughly a $125 price premium for the Mini-branded product. That’s assuming no discount on the $750 price — which is unlikely.
🙁 … im really having troubles with this download. I get the PDF on my Mac and every app i try to open it with it says that it is a damaged file … or corrupted. Not fun. Can anyone access this? is it just me? Post a link?
And will this solution in the PDF work for a widescreen Nuvi? Thanks guys!
Thanks for the updated link Gabe!
So any word on the PDF for the R50/52/53 models?
The two part numbers listed in the PDF file 65 90 0 429 056 and 65 90 0 429 058 are not good part numbers according to my local dealer. The dealer tells me the nav. part numbers are 65 90 0 429 399 and 65 90 0 429 400. The numbers listed in the PDF file may be for european models. Some dealers can provide installation instructions if you want to install your own. If the dealer can provide you with the instructions, I am told to ask for the installation instructions for the 65 90 0 429 399 and 65 90 0 429 400 to get the proper instructions.
Does anyone know if the mount will work with us folks who have the chrono pack?
NOTE: this is NOT for the R56 even though it details that it is. I’ve just tried it and there is nothing going into pin 17 or pin 18 as per detailed. Additionally all diagrams are for the R53.
DO NOT pull your R56 apart and then realise that it’s actually the wrong document.

Just to be clear – this is labeled both in the system and on the PDF as the R56 version.
Gabe, but it’s NOT. I have one of these BMW kits, and an R56, and the document is completely wrong. I pulled my car apart yesterday and none of the diagrams or plug numbers matched up.
Considering I work for Garmin – ie the company that makes this GPS, I am sticking with my previous comment.

I guess I should have said that I don’t doubt you. I just wanted to point out that it’s obviously a company wide issue for MINI.
So, is this instruction and diagram not good for the R56? Ill be getting my car soon and don’t want to take it apart if I dont have to. Is there a correct diagram here? Or does anyone know the correct wiring?
Totally agree. I’ve got these instructions but having not taken things apart yet, would certainly like to know if these are accurate or a mistake. I read it was a simple two-wire step which coincides with these notes. Please advise. Many thanks.
Bob, i got the OEM mounting bracket and theres 4 wires on there, but dont know where they would go, hopefully someone will answer our question before my car comes in.
Hi Brian: The PDF document listed above is identical to the one I received directly from Morristown-Mini (online parts) where I purchased this Garmin. I’ve written them with this question today and will let you know what they say. I also wrote this on the NAM (North American Motoring) Mini forum. Hoping for replies. Would rather not dig into the dash unless we are certain.
Anyone have success hooking this up on the R56. I have mine in pieces but I found out the hard way that directions do not match the R56. I can not locate the X9002 wire plug to make the connections. HELP! I too bought my kit from Morristown Mini, I hope they have updated installation instructions.
OK. Just finished installing the Nuvi GPS hardwire & bracket. The PDF instructions are VERY vague. For an R56 there are two plugs that come out of a main wireing harness for the steering wheel. Remove the lower dash (kneepad), the tach, the top of the steering wheel housing, and finally the bottom of the steering wheel houseing. Behind the steering sheel on the bottom there are two wires that are plugged into the steering wheel assembly. The wiring harness comes up the right side of the steering column. There is a small plug on the below the larger plug. The larger plug has a removable housing that exposes the wire pin holders. They are numbered 1 through 18. I used the empty spaces 17 and 18 according to the PDF instructions. Then put the housing back on the wiring plug and plug them both back in where they came out of. Reverse the unassembly process and you should be good to go.
Has anyone tried installing this in an r50? It should be compatible, but I have no idea where to connect the wires.
thanks!!
joe
I bought the bracket from my local BMW Dealer for a RH drive. firstly, they installed it incorrectly, the Nuvi sits in front of the Vent on left of steering, I also believe they ran into wiring problems, as they phoned to say the car will only be ready 3 hours later.
Now when you open the door, the Nuvi switches on! This can’t be right, cause you switch it off, get out of the car and it switches on! I have now rotated the bracket to sit right of the steering wheel, but have not looked into the wiring issue. Surely you can connect it the the cigarette lighter, which switches on & off with the ignition? the other 2 wires are just to loop it back into the system harness again.
I have the same problem as recrudesce.
I found the plug X9002 but there is nothing going into pin 17 or pin 18. Did someone have the same situation?
I had mine installed by Morristown Mini. Mine behaves the exact same way as poster “Lawrence Oli4” describes above. I find it annoying that it will switch on when you open or close a door. I’ve since gotten used to it. Theres a rhythm to keeping it from turning on when you close a door.

Jrammon – glad that you got it working ok. I have just spent 3 hours trying to get my kit fitted and I am struggling.
How do you separate the top and bottom housing / cover on the steering column? I’m reluctant to force it as I don’t want to snap the clips.

No sign of the X9002, so will investigate if I ever get the steering column covers off. Very frustrated and car not drivable.

Please can anyone help!

did anyone ever figure this out??? I have a 2010 R57 and no wires in the 17 and 18 pin. Can someone direct me to the correct installation instructions?
