MINI USA has collaborated with the extreme California based tuner FIREBALL TIM RACING (FTR) to create a one-of-a-kind record-breaking dragster. The extreme MINI made its show debut, beating 300 competitors to win the “Best Engineered” award at the Hot Import Nights in Phoenix, Arizona Saturday, October 15th.
The outrageous MINI dragster stood out in an atmosphere thick with music, models and impressive custom cars as the crowd of over 15,000 carved their way through the best of the best. From the coolest Japanese and German tuners to high end exotic wonder cars, the MINI dragster wowed judges and onlookers with its polished under-hood hardware and eye-catching graphics.
MINI USA provided FTR with a carbon-fiber bodied, 1700lb MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works and an assortment of parts and accessories to create the 500 horsepower + twin-charged drag monster. The car will appear at select events through the end of 2005, making its performance debut at the NHRA Sport Compact World Finals in Pomona, October 22 followed by an appearance at SEMA in Las Vegas, November 1 – 4.
Hollywood car designer and constructor Fireball Tim (Lawrence), and partner, import drag racer and tuner, Hubie Fuh have built the show-stopping MINI dragster. The two specialize in creating all forms of extreme, record-setting street and race cars. FTR currently holds the title “World’s Fastest Street MINI” with a turbo, supercharged and nitrous powered MINI Cooper S pulling 12 second quarter-mile track times.
“MINI USA is excited to collaborate with Fireball Tim Racing to help us promote MINI’s prowess in the import drag world.” said Jeff Stracco, MINI Product Manager. “With its compact dimensions and lightweight carbon fiber body, this MINI project car will be a true David amongst Goliaths on the drag strip. And of course winning an award right out of the gate is a pretty impressive way to start.”
“As MINI enthusiasts we are very excited to be partnering with MINI USA to create a unique one-of-a-kind rocket,” said Fireball Tim. “To have this car beat out 300 others for “Best Engineered” is not only an awesome testament to the platform but to all the hard work everyone has put into the project so far – just wait till we get it on the strip!”

Eh? 500hp and only a 12 sec quarter mile? Is the front wheel drive the bottleneck here?

I wonder how fast that Qvick RWD E36 powered MINI is..

try this fyi

Don’t worry, Allan, plans are in the works to flip the bodywork front to back, add 6 speeds to reverse and install big slix. That oughta do it!

Allan,

The 12-second quarter mile time is for another car built by FTR. That time belongs to “a turbo, supercharged and nitrous powered MINI Cooper S,” not the new 500 HP dragster, which hasn’t been raced yet.

I’m just wondering what the torque steer on the 500 HP car will be like :-)

I BET THIS VOIDED THE WARRANTY!:

Ahh, thanks for clearing that up.

L-O-V-E those big-ass wheels and tires on the FRONT END!!!

Hot, hot, hot.

Someone should let them know his car is a MINI and not a Mini. ;-)

Sweet! Is there anything this car cannot do???!

Errrm…. Since you asked:

Tote a live elephant.

Swim.

Produce more fuel than it consumes.

:D Sorry, I couldn’t resist! :-P

Anyhoo, very cool FTR!

HAHAHA!!! I KNEW IT!!! I JUST KNEW IT!!! Someone was going to reply cheeky to my post! Hahaha…the sweet personalities of MINI-people…werd! ;-)

Let me continue:

Hit a home run. (this is still debateable)

Make a bolgona sandwich.

Wave glowsticks at a rave.

Don’t the aerodynamics of the MINI hurt it when trying for these sort of major league 1/4 mi times?

Anyways, yeah, impressive. Probably not the greatest daily driver in the world. 1700lb though.. GAH… That’s nice.

I shot quite a few pictures of the little beast. Many are still in RAW format but they should be ready for publication/posting by this weekend. (That’s ’cause I need burn them onto CD and give them to Tim at Pomona Dragstrip this Sunday.)

Seen Fireball Tim in person and his amazing daily driver MINI…thing sounds so mean with dual 3″ cans coming out of the back, engine bay filled with so much horsepower its unbelievable really…very nice guy though and fun to talk to…congrats to him on the drag MINI. He has been talking about it for a while now!

I was in Santa Monica, Ca., for my B’Day last Thursday. After eating at a place called Chez Jay my wife and I took a walk on Ocean Blvd and saw a bunch of MINI’s and MINI style banners at this hotel called the Viceroy. Didn’t have time to stop or take pics.

After a little investigation I later found out, through Juan Calderon, that is was a MINIUSA Group who was out here in California for the MINI sponsored Drag Car. I wondered why, or maybe it’s coming, MF didn’t show any of Juan Calderon’s pics, as he photographed the car, for this article.

I also wondered why they [MINI USA] were in Santa Monica as Pomona is quite a long drive from there but Juan tells me it may be because FTR is located in the west end.
