Ian of GBMINI fame completed paperwork for the purchase of his Monterey Delivered GP today; this included getting a copy of the “certificate of origin” which reports the GP horsepower as 214 and also the GP shipped weight as 2580lbs. Ians C.O. for GBMINI#3 shows a shipped weight of 2723lbs – for a MINI with no sunroof and stock 16″ wheels.
So we have very early confirmation of a weight saving of 143lbs for a GP over Ian’s earlier MINI The first question is, how could this be? Ian’s other MCS is an automatic so that may account for some of it. And surely there will be some interesting theories in the comment section as well. But nonetheless it’s an impressive that some make the GP’s weight savings a bit more real than just numbers on a page.
MINIUSA.com lists the R53 as 2678, so even that would be a 98 lbs reduction.
Very interesting news.
That’s cool. Though I’m not sure about the shipping weight of my MINI. It weighed in at 2610lbs with a 1/4 tank of gas at the local recycling plant. The only major options are leather and the JCW kit. Before weighing, I replaced the s-heavies with 17″ rims that are 16lbs each.
Also, my previous MCS with no sunroof, 16″ wheels and lighter exhaust weighed in at 2590lbs. If the shipping weight shows that much for a MINI with those options. The shipping weight is apparently more than what the car actually weighs. If true. It is a good thing considering 2580lbs showing for the GP shipping weight.
I think it’s only a matter of time before MINI enthusiasts have a weigh-in to get an accurate measure. They’ll also verify things like fuel (about 6 pounds per gallon), oil, washer fluid, accessories and options, etc. Until then I’m somewhat skeptical.
There must be a truck stop with a scale along the MTTS route.
Ther are several between vegas and flagstaff
NOW i’m envious.
Ian,
Doesn’t GBMINI have an auto? Could that be the bigger part o f that weight savings? Thought that automatic trannys added wome weight…
Doug,
Yes GBMINI#3 has an automatic – that no doubt explains some weight, but I’d expect maybe 20-30lbs, rather than 100!
OK … so I found this MINI USA info suggesting 45lbs for the automatic … which thus means a 98lb saving for the GP against a manual MCS, still impressive!
How about we go a diet, you could lose more weight then your MINI:)
Sounds good. Recent commentators on the GP have mentioned that they can feel the extra speed in comparision to the JCW and it cannot all bbe down to just the extra BHP.
Just received the UK press release from the recent motorshow – according to that, the GP is 1120/1195kg (DIN/EU values) and the MCS is 1140/1215kg, so those figures suggest only 20kg = 44lb difference.
The apparent real world difference of nearly 100lb is much better!
(the press release also confirms that the automatic is 20kg = 44lb heavier)
Great number.. now if you put some lightweight wheels on it that fit the brakes, you may be able to loss another 30 or 40 lbs…
I like the GP wheels – but maybe non-runflat tires (Gabe has some advice here!)
