Now that we’ve read all the details, seen all the pictures, and even watched the car in action, MotoringFile wants to hear your opinions. What do you like about the new car? What do you dislike? What do you think will grow on you? Today is your day to use the site as your own personal podium. And remember, MINI is reading…
The interior is looking a little strange to me, and I want to know about aftermarket HU in that. Unless they fix the issues with the iPod hookup, I am going to want a different HU. I do like the lighting options, that seems really slick.
I like the new features in general, however what I think they have done best of all is maintain the ‘classic’ look of the current model. Sure, it looks different, particulalrly to the initiated, and yet they have kept the basic styling that has become so iconic to the brand MINI. I think it will be a great success and maybe even make the existing model a classic in its own right.
As an owner of an ’02 MC – the required are: no rattles, doors that don’t freeze shut, improved seat comfort, a/c that doesn’t bog down the engine but is effective [gets warm in ks], intuitive controls, reliability, and value – while remaining “MINIesque”.
I had to adjust to what I perceived as a ‘huge’ center speedo in ’02 – so can probably do so again. But MINI has gone overboard on their wings thing and the prominent use of circles. I’d echo the ‘less is more’ mantra heard over the past few days – but also know that change won’t occur until the next variant. [kind of like painting the whole house pink & chartreuse and then asking the neighbor for an opinion].
And speaking of color – MINI needs to partner with Disney and get some help – no way to say it – other than BMW is color challanged.
I like everything about the car except the center stack. The current controls are much more classy, the new ones look like they told their 6 year old to design it. Also why not just get rid of the nonfunctional scoop. The new MC bonnet is actually better looking than the MCS.
I like the black honeycomb grill on the MCS as it reminds me of the old ERA turbos. Power increase and better mpg are definite pluses as well.
The badge-shaped climate controls ruin an otherwise nicely updated interior. The design of it is almost comical. If I can get past it then I will be ordering an MCS soon as they’re available.
I was initially going to get an MCS, but the styling of the MC may have won me over. Oh, and that luscious rust color that is MC only too. I’ll probably spend the same amount at the dealer, but with an MC I can afford to get more options. Oh, and I DESPISE fake performance appearance trim. If the hood scoop isn’t real, leave it off. If there was a hood-scoop delete option and the MCS could be had in any MC color, I’d spring for the S.
I agree with all about the center stack though. Everything else, from the rear fender to the overhead toggles seems a step forward, but the center stack seems… I really need to see it in person. Could it be a deal breaker? Probably not, but if I did buy a S40 instead of a MC, you can blame the center stacks.
First off, I had planned to purchase a 2006 or 2007 for some time because of some money burdens disappearing (kids leaving college) and when I heard about the new engine I decided on the 2007 without seeing the final finished look. I put my deposit down a few months ago for a 2007 MCS.
I love the front and rear looks. I always like the black grill of the aero-kit and now I’ll have some of the look without the expense. I only have a small issue with the wipers tray, I think the current model with the vents looks mighty fine. However I understand the need for the change in Europe. The non-functional hood scoop is a mistake, although I have some fun planned for that.
The interior is definitely growing on me. The center console was a little odd to me when I first saw it but I like the look of the manual A/C with the knob. I would prefer the radio controls be on the console but I don’t change the factory units on my cars anyway.
I absolutely hate the center stack. I have always hated all the silver bits inside the Mini because they look so cheap. The new center stack looks even cheaper.
I think the exterior is fine but we still need more bright & bold colors. Come on Mini…these are Minis. They are meant to be bright & bold not muted like my grandma’s caddy : )
R53, R56, which one looks like new one?
I like new engine of R56 Cooper S, but more like R53 better looking!
well….maybe classical mini is the best choice for minimad.
no it’s not the mini we have all become so obsessed with over the last five years, and because of that i think there has been an enormous amount of “reaction.” i don’t think any of us will be able to fairly judge the car until we are able to drive it, but knowing bmw and mini i would highly doubt it will be anything short of a brilliant drive. that said, there are a number of cosmetic issues which do indeed bug the #*$% out of me. If you are in fact reading this MINI, please note the following:
1. the center stack instrument cluster looks like a child’s play set. how to fix it? black plastic. the grey is just really, really cheap looking. switch it to black and i think you may have your problem solved.
2. the front end of both cars is now much more “inflated” or what i would call bubbly. this in connection with the fact that car now sits up much higher (i’ve seen one in person – i know how high) makes for a less than sleek stance and almost makes the car feel like a shrunken down porsche cayenne to me. i would suggest lowering the car as much as possible to integrate the body back to the chassis and fill those wheel wells. as it stands now the car looks like it sits up too high to my eye.
3. the rear spoiler looks a bit cheapy too. perhaps it’s just the pictures, but it seems a bit plastic-y with its two piece design. it also squares off the back of the s too much and adds to a boxy feel in the rear.
on a positive note, i think the new nav looks amazing, the new 16″ star wheel shown on the s in all the press photos looks great, the center twin exhaust alos looks fantastic, keyless entry/start/stop is a great touch and the new seats also seem like a real step up.
you’ve got a really great problem on your hands MINI: you designed and built a car that people have a real relationship with and a genuine attachment to. i don’t think you could revise this car in any way, shape or form and not get some backlash – but many of these changes are pretty drastic and your user base are the most obsessive group around! as long as the car is a blast to drive i am sure many of these complaints will fade…..quickly. until then, think black plastic for that center stack! ; )
Do you really think the spoiler makes and difference to the stability of the car? Hello – this ain’t no Porsche GT2 mega wing spoiler. So why no complaints about the ‘non-functional’ spoiler?
Or how about 17 inch alloys? Do you really think they improve grip? Hmmm…yet no complaints about ‘non-functional’ enlarged alloys!
The new MINI crushes the current one. Yes – all your MINIs are now obsolete – enough nit-picking, just get over it!
I think I also approve overall. I’m not sure I like the more wrap-around style of the headlights now that the turn signals are integrated, but it’s mostly good. I also don’t like the size of the black plastic on the fenders and agree that the car looks way too high off the ground. I still prefer my ’03 Chili Red MCS, I think it looks more aggressive.
As far as the interior goes, I think it looks great — aside from the cartoonish logo-shaped plastic buttons. It looks like most of us are in agreement about what we like and don’t like. Perhaps MINI should have done some testing with the MF crowd.
Looks nice but I have no plans to change from my MCS JCW – everytime I get in my car, I smile. The R56 styling looks a little less ‘tight’, especially at the front (I know they blame the new crash test requirements) and the interior just looks over-styled.
I have no interest in the new features – the idea of putting a key and then pushing a separate button to start is plain stupid. Keyless go makes more sense but is pointless. Bluetooth is nice but why talk when you can drive? The interior lighting looks neat but I am not sure how it makes the car handle better/go faster.
I am sure we will have an R56 in our garage at some point though – my 11 year old daughter LOVES the Mini and she drives in just 5 years. I see a 2007/2008 Cooper in her future…
Exterior: Really Cool. I like this Stephenson concept not of ‘Retro’ but ‘Evolution’. I think MINI had achieved this once again with the 2007 model.
Interior: The interior lightning color selection is a great feature. Changing the buttons for dome and map lights to toogle switches enhances that helicopter/plane/control-panel feeling (and doubles the ‘how cool those switches’ expression of passengers). Not trying to be the dissident voice in here, but I kind of like the wing-mini-logo-shaped A/C buttons. I just hope that when ordering the Autoclimate option they keep the dot matrix reading in the center instead of the dial.
i’ve bought 2 MCS’s, an early 03 which was traded in for an 06. i think MINI did a decent job evoloving the design. i really do. excellent job updating the interior and retaining the design themes from the current model.
my criticisms will echo much of what i expect will be listed by other’s.
the biggest mistake is the fake hood scoop. it’s absolutley the worst thing BMW could have done to the car. it’s contrived and doesn’t belong if it doesn’t serve a purpose. the MINI has sunk to “ricer” levels of aesthetic and i HATE it. unless the new “JCW” car is an absolute stormer i will not buy another S because of the scoop.
ideas i feel less strong about are, the center stack and the grill on the S. i like the body color slats on the current model and will miss them on the S. the large swaths of black plastic in the center stack looks tacky. the NAV helps a lot but i certainly hope there’s an alloy or body color type trim option in the ala carte list. also in the center stack the “wing” HVAC controls look like a caricature of the current design, that’s NOT a good thing.
I’ve really grown to like the R56 now that we are seeing the undisguised car. I think the externals of the car look great and show a continued progression rather than having the car never change for 40 years. I don’t think that MINI could get away with what was done with the Mini.
I like the changes on the inside as well. I think the interior stands out, especially with all the color options that will be available.
I don’t have a MINI, so I don’t know if my opinions would be different if I was a current owner, but I have been interested in MINIs for several years, and the design changes will not cause me to get a slightly used car versus a new.
My primary interest in the MINI is the handling characteristics and the factory customization options. There are plenty of small cars out there, but few that can carve a road like a MINI.
In general I think they did a good job with the exterior in response to the new government regulations. Very glad to see that they kept the same wheelbase. I would not want to see the size creep up as it does on any other car. Part of the uniqueness and charm of the Mini was that it didn’t change over the years yet it still remained popular. The MINI needs to do the same thing.
Sorry to see the supercharged go and I guess I will adjust to the new turbocharged motor. I sure love the whine of the supercharger.
Some parts of the interior I find a little strange. The door panels for one. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is about them that I do not like. One of the articles about the R56 mentioned that some of the storage areas have been changed, reduced or eliminated. This has me concerned since the car is small and has so little storarage anyway it isn’t good to lose any space.
The storage area in each door is important. The first 4 years had the most usable space, I am not nearly as happy with the door storage in my ’06 MCS as I was with my ’02 MCS. Much more difficult to access and retrieve articles from as they are now. I understand that the door storage space has been made smaller in the R56. Not good.
In the boot there used to be 2 nice storage areas, one on either side with nice covers. These areas worked well to store a small air compressor, bottle of “Slime”, tire plugging kit, and load straps. The covers kept what was inside out of the way and out of sight. I am really disappointed to see those go. Now, inorder to carry these items they will have to take up precious boot floor space. This is a really bad move of the re-design team and should be changed back.
I need to carry these items as I have run-flat tires in the summer and conventional tires in the winter. The load straps I use all of the time to fasten items to the MINI roof rack system. Speaking of fastening loads.
Would it be possible to provide some anchor points inside the rear area so that when the seats are folded down loads could be secured safely? I worry about having to make a panic stop and having the cargo come flying forward. Some nice permanent anchor points placed strategically around the back area so that loads could be strapped down would be nice. Maybe 4 points located on the backs of the rear seats, recessed into the seat back so the cargo would still sit flat. The 4 points in the boot are not adaquate for this.
Thinking about the seat backs. Why did they relocate the seat back release levers to the center? If they are raised above the surface, as the current design is, then they will interfer with cargo storage more than the current design.
As for the dash/center column. That is a whole other ball of worms. I do not care for putting the radio controls in the speedo unit. Straight and squared-off shapes do not belong in round a opening. Didn’t anyone over there hear of square pegs in round holes? You aren’t supposed to do that. Give us back the plain round speedo without any embellishment. This is the only reason that I did not get the factory GPS unit. I hated the rectangular screen in the round speedo bezel.
I noticed that the number of toggle switches has been changed in the lower area. I haven’t seen any good pictures of the upper area, by the rear view mirror so I do not know what is going on there. But I sure hope that they have put the clock back up above the mirror. That was so much easier to read, especially for people wearing “progressive” lense glasses.
In ’05 the inside mirror was enlarged. Why? I do need to see more of the “C” pillars or my passengers ear, or my ear for that matter. It gives taller drivers a huge blind spot as it is now. Would it be possible to go back to the ’02-’04 style mirror? I am having vehicles appear out from behind the mirror all the time. I have to be sure to move my head and look under the mirror at all intersections, even corners to the right cause vision loss behind the new larger mirror.
I guess that is enough for now. Thanks for asking.
I am not a fan of the side markers on either model… they look huge and out of place. I also don’t care for the fact the lower black trim is thicker and taller. Please offer those pieces painted from the factory to fix that issue.
Interior controls look cheap, I agree with the black plastics idea over silver. I can just envision they silver paint wearing off after a few years, making the whole interior look shoddy. I really dislike that the steering wheel controls are on the front of the spokes. The 2 spoke MFSW on the ’02-’03 Minis are much more intuitive and easy to use, whilst keeping my eyes on the road. I can assure you more eyes are pulled off the road searching for the proper buttons on the 3 spoke.
More opportunities for storage should have been taken, or perhaps offered as options. I also really don’t like stereo systems as integrated as this new one is. Part of the Mini’s appeal is our ability to add aftermarket options, and this severely limits or adds expense to these endeavors.
The things I like: Lighter weight, improved power in stock form, interior lighting options, new seats and dash/door materials look nicer and more up market. Gas mileage looks to be improved, which is always a big plus.
Colors: While I’m pleased with some of the new colors (the blues, mellow yellow), I really wish Mini would listen to the people (us) regarding color options. I would like to see an Alpine White, Jet Black, True BRG, and more than anything, an increase in the number of bright bold colors. The 2006 color palette is just awful, and really is the deciding factor in me not purchasing one this year.
So far, so good. While all the spy photos had me doubting, the final touched that were covered up till this week were done right. I still reserve my full opinion, which could go either way (better or worse than the current mini), till I see and hear one in person.
I remenmber when the current MINI first appeared in a small area just outside the main showroom of the NY Auto Show some years back. The overall look of the car impressed me; the interior I wasn’t so sure about.
Having driven an 04 All Pure Silter/Blue Lapis Leather MCS now for 46,000+ miles that interior has been easy on the eyes and very easy to live with.
Some of the more recent interior dash and door color options offered by MINI really don’t blend harmoniously with the overall interior design.
With that said, the new MINI interior designers have very successfully used color accents to make the overall look inside the car spectacular! While not a fan of the new combo speedo/radio unit and center stack, the interior does retain the spirit of the current car.
The same can be said for the exterior design. The look and spirit of the current car has been retained. Many of you will micro-criticize some elements of the redesign but you should feel good about what BMW/MINI has done with this latest iteration.
I’m actually tempted to risk getting a first year production car!
I like nearly all of what the R56 is and I would be excited about the new option packages being offered if not for one solitary concern. The center stack issue. I find it hard to believe that an apparently tallented and knowledgeable team of designers somehow convinced an apparently tallented and knowledgeable team of executives to install that grade-school-level, paint-by-numbers, Mickey Mouse, Fisher-Price, abomination they call a center stack. If that center stack EVER “grows on me” …. I will promtly have it surgicaly removed and undergo clinical hypnotherapy to have any rememberance of it erased from my memory. I understand the folks at Webster’s are considering a photo of the R56 center stack to be included in their latest edition under the phrase “deal-breaker”. The car is not good enough to have a console that bad. Bump the horsepower an extra 75 ponies, give it all-wheel drive, drop the price by five grand, and offer free 100K mile bumper to bumper warranty …. then …. then I might buy one (if I can drape a towel over the center stack). Have I been too vague?
I think I’d give the exterior on the MCS an A minus. It’s a pretty nice job at evolution, and I’m hoping a few things – side markers, giant wheel wells – will grow on me. And as the only fan of having all blacks and grays for paint, I’m good to go.
Inside, it’s love or hate. Love the new seats, new nav, starter button, colorline, and I know I am going to love watching the speedo needle fly around the outside of the nav.
I’m witholding judgment on the HVAC controls until I see them in person. Enough said.
Likes:
-Interior; the entire interior looks great to me, including the much maligned center stack.
-The interior materials used look improved in quality.
-The rear end with the split fogs.
-The new engine potential and technology implemented in it. Low end torque, increased power.
-That it’s lost a 22, plus or minus pounds.
Dislikes:
-The front end, and more specifically, the nose and headlamps. The hood looks like it’s been smashed in a little as a result of the Euro pedestrian safety standards. The Cooper S helps break this up a little bit with it’s fake scoop. I don’t like the round headlamps and how they are angled out instead of facing straight ahead.
-The fake scoop.
-The conventional hood.
I’d buy one for sure. Overall, I like it more than the current gen. MINI.
Overall, it is a nice evolution. If you squint at it sideways, the new and old look pretty close. The greenhouse could be a bit taller in relation to the fender line, and I hope no head-room was sacrificed – stats are one thing, but real-time is another, and us tall blokes don’t need scrunching down.
My rear corner rant is my constant companion, however, as I think it’s a a bad styling caprice that interrupts the flow at that area – what’s with all these weird-ass ass ends lately? Nice to have orange signals again, tho. The front grille area is much improved, with a hint of Beemer here and there, but nothing obtrusive. If the bonnets can be swapped, I’d ditch the center scoop – always reminded me of one of those unfortunately ugly Fairthorpe cars from back in the day. The colors have been improved in some ways, especially the yellow, which is much closer to Ferrari’s Fly Yellow, always a fave of mine – it looks deeper and less washed-out, and very Screaming Yellow Zonker.
The interior has gotten gimmicky, or more gimmicky if you will, and I’m holding out judgement until I sit in one. That said, it looks like a more expensive car inside, which is, I’m sure, a planned optical illusion; much less large plastic yardage, and anything small and yucky could prolly be aftermarketed in the right direction. My butt will decide if the seats are better, and a higher quality leather would be nice.
All in all a big maybe, but it improves on constant veiwing.
As a owner of a 63 ad 67 Mini Cooper when I saw the first “new” minis I was about horrified with what they did to the soul of my little cars. Flashing to the present I still have both of my classics but I ended up driving a 02 mini and was impressed. So since that time I have purchased a 02 Cooper, a 03 Cooper S, then replaced the 02 with a 04 JCW Cooper S,and finally replaced the 03 with a late production 06 JCW Cooper S. I have already put my money down on a order spot for a JCW R56 and for the possible evolution of the JCW that Gabe was hinting about in 08.
So all in all I can tell you that when the BMW Minis came out I was solidly against them, until I drove one and began to fall in love with the current car. While I do have some reservations about the new car I can only imagine that once I slide into the seat behind the wheel that my views will begin to change
Things I would like to change:
1. The color palate for the release of the R56 is rather boring. I do like the new Lighting Blue and Nightfire red, but I feel that mini has somewhat forgotten that the owners of these cars go out of their way to not blend into the crowd.
2. The wing shapped AC controls are still making me a bit crazy. I think they will do ok in person but they do really stand out on the dash as being visually out of place.
3. I would also have to say that the plastic trim around the wheel arches is out of scale to my eye to the rest of the car
Things I like:
1. They did a good job evolving our minis without losing the character of the auto in the process.
2. The interior feels like it has been refined decently.
As for the hood scoop, I am not to worried about it being just for looks as I have no idea what mini may be thinking about its future possible usuage.
I’m sorry, MINI, but I can’t stand the new center stack.
I especially dislike the speedo-radio combo, and how in it’s utter hugeness it appears to be ‘stuck on’ to the dash rather than incorporated into it. It bugs me so much, I know it’s going to be a game breaker for me… no more MINIs until it’s corrected.
I also somewhat dislike the turn signals being included in the headlights, the lower rear bumper area on the S, and the shape of the new taillights.
I’m sorry for sounding so negative, I don’t dislike everything new about it, but the dash is just killing me.
I’m very happy that they’ve restored some brightness to the color lineup. I’m happy that they’re agressively exploring interior design choices, even if I don’t like the current results. I do wish the clock would go back to its proper position.
I’m a little saddened by the move to turbo, but am willing to wait and see how it drives. I have very mixed feelings about the hill assist. On the one hand, it’s convinient, on the other, I like rolling backwards; its often useful if you’re on a small incline, like my driveway.
all in all i like it. i cant wait to see/drive one. but:
-a non functional hood scoop is just stupid. they dont trust us as consumers. they think we need an outward (now vestigial) sign of higher horsepower. the jcw better have a totally bitchin air intake there.
-please offer the trim painted body color from the factory. everybody wants it; in other cars it is how we distinguish lower trim levels from their sportier brothers.
-same with the giant chrome “sports badge”. that will be the first thing i rip off the car, shave of s emblem, and paint body color.
-the wing is not an improvement. give me a subtle lip spoiler or a spoiler delete option.
-i’ll echo the color thing. if bmw needs to give us lots of dark/unexciting colors, offer us a bright color that changes every year. more limited editions, more color choices. scion has done it (with pretty boring colors). green, orange, apline white!!.
-and to beat a dead horse, the center stack doesnt look good at all without the nav and only partially passable with it. what’s wrong with the current stack? if the speedo is to be that big, then fine. why stick the radio in it? to make sure that none of the ICE guys can play? that just doesnt seem right. it has been said before, someone will make a lot of money designing a new center stack.
i know a lot of things mini does are a la carte DONT CHANGE THAT, but it’d be nice to see maybe a jcw appearance package that we could add that matches the trim, downplays the chrome sports badge, includes the aerokit, and changes the spoiler a bit.
i can’t wait to see the rear shoulders in person. i think they’re going to be the bees knees.
Overall the car is a big downgrade, it looks cheaper and wussier. Who want’s MINI to bring back the white tail lights? It was one of my favorite parts of the original car. They were a very classy touch, the big red tail lights throw off the color symmetry. My biggest problem with the car is new cheap looking exhaust. It looks like one of those big weld on cans from a Japanese tuning shop. You can see the whole thing from behind the car, not just the big tips like the JCW model.
Overall I’m buying one… and based on what I’ve seen and read:
Like:
I like how the interior has been improved. Some of the large close-ups of the new interior show some nice finishes. I can’t wait to see one in person to see if it’s carried throughout. The old bulging glossy plastic dash trim and other bits kept me from buying one of those. It already looks dated compared to the new interior. Unlike some others, at 6’4″ tall, I like how they have made more people room at the expense of storage room. One man’s storage in another man’s pain. Exterior is minimally different than old, no better or worse and still distinctive and stylish. Mechanicals are improved across the board for better performance, comfort and economy.
Dislike:
Worried a bit about the feel and up-close look of the center stack controls. The design is fine except it would be nice to find a way to fit a standard replacement radio into the design, though this issue is not unique to MINI. I could go without a hood scoop though it’s very subtle as scoops go. I may want some exterior chrome in combinations not offered. All minor issues.
Please, oh PLEASE bring back the 2-spoke MFSW with the controls on the back of the wheel. The original controls are so much easier and safer to use. Very intuitive. Much better than the current “nintendo style” buttons.
The new style buttons are so difficult to work. I have to take my eyes off the road to operate them every time. Even if you just incorporate the original, rear mounted, buttons in the 3-spoke wheel would be a definite safety improvement.
The rear mounted buttons were so much easier to use. Your fingers could easily identify and operate the buttons without having to look at your hands.
I like the rear of the car and the new rear fog lights on the MCS.
I’ll reserve opinions on the wheels until I learn what their weights are. Hope they selected some light wheels instead of those slugs they chose before.
-no weight gain
-better weight distribution with advanced, more efficient alloy-block engine (but will it be as bomber as the current one?)
-straight-through exhaust (with a great sound if that clip is truly representative)
-extra suspension travel
-improved seats (still waiting to see US spec, however)
Dislikes:
-integrated turn signals into headlights, looks really bad IMO ($100 says MINI will go back to the non-integrated look just like Porsche did from the 996 to 997)
-cheesy looking center stack with an even bigger speedo (who actually looks there while driving?!)
-lack of non-metallic exterior color choices
I’m 15, and i’m going to be buying my first car soon. I’v convinced my parents on the mini, and will probably be buying one within the next year or two. The new engines look great, i’m sure the styling would grow on me. The interior is an improvment, but I agree with the others on the basis that the grey/silver plastic looks cheap. It’s not a deal breaker, but athricite buttons and knobs would be a nice option. Also, Active head restraints would be a great saftey feature to have. Over all i’m quite pleased with the new model.
The R56 has a kind of “not that there’s anything wrong with that” feel to it. Well, other than that interior center column (looks unfinished, really cheap, and the controls are out of proportion to their space) and fake hood scoop (it is still fake, right?).
There have already been a lot of good comments posted so I don’t feel a need to repeat them. But I do think the development of the new Mini has a good parallel with the past development of the Miata. Mazda was careful to try and keep the feel and experience of newer cars through light weight and similar styling. But now that the MX-5 is in it’s 3rd generation, the original is still the best thought-out and has a purity of performance and design that the later cars could not seem to continue, despite increased performance. Trying to be more comfortable and offer more options/power/luxury has hurt the car. Another case of design by commitee or being everyting to everyone hurting the original.
Following up on such popular cars is a very hard thing to do and I’m glad I was not responsible! I’ll be interested to see what we think of the R53 versus R56 comparison 10 years from now. I think the car will sell well and I’ll wish I had the improved performance, but I’m glad I got my ’06 JCW when I did!

Oh come on man…I learned how to use my 3 spoke controls ten minutes after rolling out of the dealership.
I liked the 2 spoke wheel as well…but it ain’t coming back. Ever. I’m suprised we’re still even talking about it. You might as well ask them to bring back Seafoam Green…lol.
Have to see that centre stack before making up my mind, but don’t like it in the photos.
Looks like a toy car.
The ability to change the colour might be cool, but I’m not sure I want a car with so many ‘cute’ features.
The drives the thing though, and will be considering the next JCW package, hopefully fall ’08.
I was going to get a ’06 MCS, but as more details came out about the ’07 model, I decided to hold off. So here are my thoughts on the R56:
Likes:
– more modern engine with much improved low rpm torque
– higher grade plastic inside
– red leather inset interior trim is sweet
– improved fuel economy
– adjustable ambient lighting
– center speedo with navi looks cool
– no more awkward giant cup holder
Dis-likes:
– navi is still not touch-screen
– AC control are toyish looking
– the evolutionary reskin of the exterior too timid
– the wheel options shown so far not very exciting
– marginal increase of horsepower on MCS
– marginal weight reduction
At first, there were a few things I wasn’t crazy on, especially the centre console, but everything’s grown on me. Everything except… those awful amber indicator lenses in the headlights! They should have been clear – they stick out like sore thumbs!
I like the interior but the exterior just does nothing for me. The nose has become too bulbous and looks a lot like a pot belly (I have one so I can say that). I love the lines of the front end of my 05- the way the lights flow into the hood, the sexy cleavage between the light and the grill… the nice hump where the hood scoop is….. ahhh I need a cigarette.
As for the rear? My jury is still out, not real please with the solid line below the bumper.
While Gabe has provided us with many juicy details we won’t REALLY know until we can see it in the flesh and drive it. That said, so far the exterior of the car looks fine to me; it has lost a little “something” but is still unmistakenly a MINI. The new engine remains an unknown however. It “sounds” pretty good but we’ll just have to wait for the details. That leaves the interior. Here, I’m really nervous; from what I can see in the photos I really don’t like it. We’ve heard that the materials are upgraded (and that is a good thing) but the design, inspite of the benefits it provides, looks very questionable.

<blockquote>You really need to bring back the 2 spoke sterring wheel with the controls on the back!!!!!!</blockquote>
This is something I love about my current ’04 Cooper, the controls on the back are so much easier to use – after all that’s where your finger tips are.
I like everything I’ve heard about the new engines, suspension, seats but I’m not impressed with the interior changes or the exterior to the Cooper. Prior to ’07 I preferred the styling of the Cooper over the MCS, now I prefer the MCS. Of course my opinion may change after I’ve actually seen and test driven the cars myself!
All the test drive reviews I’ve read so far have been for the MCS, does anyone when we can expect a review of the Cooper?
Likes; Any real improvements in quality, comfort, performance/mileage and safety!
Dislikes: Stupid statements, such as our current Minis are obsolete from someone who has only looked at some photos or read something in print!Get Serious!!
Overall I like it. It’s still a MINI. But I see some choices and moreover some philosophical shifts in this new car that I very much dislike.
I’m going to cast my enthusiastic “nay” vote on the center stack for all of the reasons mentioned up to now, but furthermore the center stack is the culmination of everything that I think is wrong with the new car. At some point in the development process, the designers and developers stopped <em>designing</em> and started <em>decorating</em>. They haven’t so much evolved the car, as they’ve mostly needlessly added to it. Some of the choices are positive, such as the chrome surrounds on the lower grill on the nose, or the new rear fog light. But others are simply awful – the size of the speedo, integrating the CD player into it and totally screwing everybody out of their audio choices (a major tenet of MINI up to now). It’s almost as though they’ve gotten super insecure all of the sudden – as though if they don’t flood the car with “features” it won’t sell. I am simply baffled by this. Why are we trying to turn the MINI into a BMW?
It’s become all about “features”, not about utilitarian, premium, high-performance, small-car motoring. And sadly, this attitude seems evident throughout the car. The new engine has an on/off water and oil pump. Why? What purpose of necessity does that serve? I haven’t driven it in winter yet, but my MCS warms up next to instantly in moderate temperatures. Is it that big a problem? They’ve kept the hood scoop, which serves no purpose. I think it looks great and I’m glad it’s still there, but the design imperative that’s made MINI such a aesthetically strong marque is fading quickly. It seems to have been replaced with gimmick. Why not route the intake through that nostril? The last Corvette I saw under the hood of had an intake that style.
The center stack is again, the culmination of this shift away from utilitarian design. The CD player has been moved to the display. Why? Is that somehow more convenient? Of course not. It’s just trying to be “nifty.” Where the auto A/C controls were subtly repetitive of the MINI logo while still keeping very intuitive function, the new controls are trying entirely too hard. If I wanted Fisher Price controls, I’d buy a Ford. Keyless go? Are you kidding me? Again, why are they trying to make a BMW out of it? We MF folk have criticized VW over and over again for losing touch with its utilitarian, “people’s car” roots and I see MINI headed in that same direction.
The driving experience will still be there, and probably even better. I can take solace in that. But the purity of the design of the current car is what made me completely fall in love with it. With that now polluted, and much of that charm gone, I’m hoping that MINI will learn this lesson quickly and put some soul back in the car – by taking some of the decoration back out of it. And yes, the center stack IS a deal-breaker for me. I’m going to kiss his silver roof when I see Winston next.
I think the new design is good, inside and out. It seems that Mini has addressed all of the issues I had with the current car.
Here are the things that made up my mind to put a deposit for a ’07 MCS:
-Better Gas Mileage
-I love turbocharged engines
-From the looks/initial reports more comfortable seats. I test drove the last mini, and found myself never able to get comfy (I have an audi with Recaros right now)
-I do really like the new interior. Since the stereo is now integrated I’d really be disappointed if it doesn’t sound good. Please make sure the Hi Fi option actually is Hi Fi.
-Some people see the new interior looking like a toy, but I see it as being more simple and to the point. I like that. I don’t think you should change it.
I’m also buying the car for autocross.. I hope you’ve maintained the same agility, and handling the current car has which allows people to clean up in G Stock. I think the complainers will be shut up if the car drives better than the current car.
I also think the hood scoop is not a bad thing if it does actually feed air into the engine bay. If that is the case it actually is performing a function even though it is not feeding an intercooler. If the hood scoop is sealed I think you should just consider removing it. Or offer an option for people to delete the hood scoop from the MCS.
I’d be happy to test drive the car and check it out if you guys ever plan on having a focus group in the SFBay area.. motoring file feel free to give my email to mini.
I think the bottom line is that visually EVERYONE fell in love with the current generation instantly … with ZERO complaints. It was just perfect in so many ways.
This one tries a bit too hard …
And really we all know its about cost cutting in the end, which is business as usual.
I think I am over it. I was expecting a more radical re-design and Mini didn’t at all deliver on their promise to improve the interior quality. I am going with an Audi A3.
Exterior: Love it. Ok, the non-functional hood scoop on the S is a bit much, but I can over look that. I even like most of the new wheels (those bridge spokes look awesome!).
Interior: Love it. Yes, even the center stack. Yes, even the larger speedo. The idea of keyless go? Love it too. Bluetooth? Yep yep, especially if it works. I think the interior really pops now, or can with the extra colors and has a gadget-y look that I really like.
The extra options look swell if not a bit pricey. I’m not a fan of anything in the new convenience package except keyless go and bluetooth. Hopefully those will be available ala carte.
I’m no designer, but I know what I like. I love my ’03…rattles, stumble and all, but I think MINI has done a great job in updating the car.
I will not waste anyones time here rewriting what’s already been said. Except one thing I need to say, just to say it. That side marker is UGLY… So ugly as it would divert me towards another marque.
I’d give the 07’s a C MINUS based on the Plastic Fantastic approach they’ve taken with … everything.
To me, the motor is, based on literature thusfar, looking to be an A MINUS.
I would have hoped and expected an upgrade within the cockpit. Not a plastic fantastic fantasy of cheap and shiny. I was hoping there’d be a classy direction taken to wrap ourselves in.
The most important criteria for me will be initial build quality since I will be an early owner of a 2007 MCS next March. I have done this before with a BMW 3 series in 1992 and with an Audi A6 in 1999, both of which had little or no problems.
I like the plethora of choices for the interior, and find the photos of the inside components to be of a high quality standard. The center stack is the most controversial, and I hope that the through the better use of materials and color it will be more acceptable once it can be seen in the flesh, after the Paris Auto Show.
Mini has raised the bar with this new generation of car, but competitors such as Honda and VW seem to offer better value; however, in case of VW there are troublesome quality issues and poor residuals.
The use of a turbo charger will prove to be a real improvement along with the new technology that Mini has incorporated into the suspension puts this brand at the top. Once out in November, sales should go through the roof.
I’m surprised that Mini has chosen to leave a gloss black out of their color palette.
I love my 03 MCS with pulley, Vee spokes non run flats, zenons, computer, two spoke wheeel, patina dash, auto air, heated leather,DSC, and custom speakers drivers/and extra amps. My car is rattle free. Wonderful to drive with no problems in 45K.
I would love to have the Peugeot aluminum turbo engine, it will be a tuners dream and we will see tons of power from it. I would like the LSD. Other than that my car is pretty good. Too fast sometimes.
I like the fact that it is the original. Every part is integrated in to a common theme of some thinking or another. Designed before the world had a chance to comment. The design attitude was what would be good, good looking and fun. Lots of thought went into it.
Enter the design team.
Now we have wrap around tail lights to elimnate a side marker. C pillar air foils instead of the wrap around glass. Change for change. Change for cost. More leg room, take out the console pillers. What’s with the funky side panel vent/indicators? The integrated sound system better be good. I can’t see any aftermarket copies of that format. Did the door tweeters get lowered? Small bitches.
I will be standing in line to drive the new S when it hits the States. I think it might be like sneeking a date with your girl friend’s sister. Go BMW MINI.
When I started looking to replace my current car (original 2-door Rav4 – 10 years and still going!) with a MINI, I was very much on the fence about whether to go with an R53, which I liked quite a bit, or hold out for the R56, mostly for the improved gas mileage and initial potential for more rear passenger space. After having seen and read everything that Gabe has so nicely provided, I decided to lease an ’06 MC and wait to see how the R56 does over the first model year or so (not to mention wait and see what the Traveler version will look like in ’08). In part, though, my decision to order an ’06 instead of waiting on the R56, was that after being exposed to passion of the owners on the Motorfile and Mini2 pages, I couldn’t wait to join the club and drive my own MINI!
My opinion as it is right now without actually sitting or obviously riding in one:
– I’m sure i’ll love the motor
– and I bet those seats are better
other than that, the car does nothing for me.
I would also stress the fact as to why you guys (MINI) are so afraid to go out more on a limb with color options? (very bland and far to many blues) Not to mention, bring back Jet Black!… and also offer more roof colors! If nothing else, bring back the silver roof.
Things i can tell you i definitely don’t like
– rear bumper
– the fatter plastic body trim (cheapens it to me)
– a/c – heat (Mini logo look) controls.
That’s enough for now…I will hang on to my ’06 as long as I can..no rush for me to upgrade (or downgrade as I see it now)…I don’t mean to be so harsh, but what else can I say. I hope those sales come up. :-/
I have an 05 MCS and I am glad I do. I think the new model has given away too much to satisfy other demands and looks more like a Honda than I am comfortable with. It’s too squashed, too inelegant compared with the 1st and 1.5st gen. ok, maybe some fun multicoloured lights would be fun inside the cabin, but I can live without.
I love everything about the car. It will be the next car that I buy. The one thing that would make the car even better, actually two things, would be all wheel drive, and upgraded performance packages. I want to give those Subi’s a run for their money. I appreciate the fact that the designers have not strayed from the original design. If you did it just wouldn’t be a MINI anymore.
I was close to ordering an MCSC this week. After seeing the photos and reading the reviews… I’ve reconsidered. My next MINI will be an R56. My cabrio dreams will have to wait till 2009.
There is only one thing I wish MINI had to offer in the R56: a DSG type transmission.
I’ve been kind of wondering if I should have waited for the ’07….NAH. I know I’ll be happy getting the ’06 this September.
My only rant on the ’07 is the fake hood scoop. It seems it doesn’t to have a GENUINE function other than to distinguish the MCS from the MC.
My biggest raves on the ’07 are:
– the improved fuel economy
– with the slightly higher horsepower.
These improved factors really bothered me about my recent order for an ’06. However, the overall outer ’07 design still looks like a MINI which satifies my order for the current ’06.
So why not wait for the ’07? Nope…I’ve been waiting too long to get a MINI.
The interior is unique, and I’ll give MINI credit for that. However, I do find it to be very ugly, overstyled and cheap looking. It sounds petty, but this could prevent me from purchasing one of these in the future.
I assume the dashboard chrome trim will be offered on the 2007s. If so, I think it would be essential to make the inside look at all respectable. After agonizing for weeks whether or not to shell out the $200 for chrome trim on my ’06, I went with it, and cannot imagine NOT having it!
The outside is attractive; no major complaints. It might be a little too blocky up front–though I understand that MINI has to comply w/ Europe’s new pedestrian safety standards–but it is otherwise a clean design. I like the 2005-06 model a bit more, but the 2007 is still a very sharp car (minus the interior!).
Funny part of this conversation is that if any of you were involved with classic mini’s right as the new 02 mini’s where coming out is that there where a lot of simular complaints about the BMW Mini.
A year later several of my classic mini friends (myself included) where fumbeling over ourselves to get one. The fact is that a massive number of us are happy with our current cars so changes are hard to accept. From my personal experiance I would say before you make up your minds get you hands on the vehicle and let it soak in and see what you think then. I am never wanting to see the “perfect mini” as I take great pleasure on moding mine to make it an origonal, which is the heart of the mini tradition.
<blockquote>After agonizing for weeks whether or not to shell out the $200 for chrome trim on my ‘06, I went with it, and cannot imagine NOT having it!</blockquote>
I second that! My anthricite dash + the chrome looks amazing!
I have been looking at the 2006 Mini for a couple months, I need to get a new car by the mid of February. I read about the 07 changes and have decide to wait for one. I know it will be difficult to get one by Mid Feb but I live in Ft. Lauderdale. I love the changes that have been made to the car. I am getting an 07 because of the upgrade technology. I think the car looks wonderful inside. More polished without losing the Mini feel. I about getting a MC, don’t feel the need for the MCS. My only concern is do they have the quality nailed down? I understand the 06 is near perfect.
I dig it. It seems more masculine than the previous generation, and that’s cool. The only minor negative is the center stack which I’ve never seen in person. I’ll reserve judgement until then. I think the speedo is well done in that it integrates the audio without being too busy. Sure, it’s busier than the current generation, but I think I’ll enjoy the functionality. To me, it seems that the buttons I’d need to touch most often are higher up and more in the line of sight (and also on the steering wheel, of course).
It doesn’t bother me that I’m “stuck” with the MINI’s audio system. My undergrad studies were in music (I spent a good deal of time as a gigging musician), and I’ve never found myself wanting more than a stock stereo system. I’m sure it’ll be more than acceptable.
I’ll live with the fact that the hood scoop isn’t functional. If nothing else it opens possibilities for aftermarket mods or for future in-house iterations. Plus, it just plain looks better with it.
So, afterall, there are no deal-breakers for me. I’ll get one.
Although the new MINI looks very similar to the current model and will probably have enhanced performance, it just doesn’t quite cut it. It looks cheaper inside and out and the fake hood scoop is a deal breaker. I felt the same way in 1977 when the BMW 2002 was replaced with the 320i. Two big thumbs down.
The front end of the new S is just horrific, I try to keep an open mind but the head light angle and the huge lower “mouth” grill have lost the whole Mini thing. The rear tail lights that were such a perfect shape have lost there sex appeal and the new interior looks like Bangle and a bunch of kids got a hold of it. What a shame.
I love the wheel choices and hope to see the Bridge Spokes on NAMs marketplace soon. The only thing I can honestly say that I don’t care for is the center stack and dash. We know it’s a MINI from the outside so there is no need to put the logo into the design of most everything inside.
As an owner of an ’06 and previously an ’02 I’ve got very little to criticize about the first gen MINI. If the next one is just a little lighter, gets a little better gas mileage and still retains the MINI fun-to-drive quality, it can’t be bad. The new body style won’t confuse anyone as to who made it, and the new interior is just as quirky as mine. I do hate that they dropped the supercharger, it’s sad to think there may one day be a world that’s forgotten what full throttle SC whine sounds like. But as long as MINIs are still made, no one will forget how to have a good time.
I do like the toggle switches on the overhead panel, but beyond that there’s not much I like. I’m sure it will grow on me in time, but the first generation was lust at first sight…
Being a motoring advisor since February of ’03, and as an owner of a MY 2003 since July, I’ve seen a fair share of options on the cars. I really like the exterior of the new car and am just a little concerned about the interior. There may be too many mini logos, and I’m sure there are going to be too many interior options, which will result in some tacky matches that we’ll have to carefully avoid. However, I’d like to see it in person before I make a final judgement.
Regarding past changes and future, I prefer the leather sport 2-spoke steering wheel with controls to the 3-spoke. It had a thicker grip, better thumb notches, and I don’t like the finger guides on the back of the 3-spoke. I do like the idea of several steering wheel options, as that instills hope, but I somehow doubt we’ll shortly see a menu button (even though it could be nicely centered in the radio control circle).
The new Nav, however, integrated into the speedo, and incorporating traffic updates and voice commands seems like the way to go.
Nonetheless, I can’t wait to see it, and may be making a swap sometime next year, depending more on the drive and pricing than anything else.
To borrow from “ap’s” qoute from above…”the required are: no rattles, doors that don’t freeze shut, improved seat comfort, a/c that doesn’t bog down the engine but is effective, intuitive controls, reliability, and value – while remaining “MINIesque.”
The most important thing to me is that these things are in order. I prefer a less flashy interior and more substance where it counts. I owned an ’03 MCS, and the quality issues it had completely obliterated any feeling of “fun” that comes from driving around corners quickly.
Styling-wise, I’m not crazy about the grouper-like front end of the Cooper S or the similarly bloated-looking gas cap, side vents, and hatch grab handle designs when compared to the R53.
Most of the criticism I am reading is based on photos. You have to see the real thing before you can tell if it is good or bad, as the photos lack depth. From what I can see, there is not much to criticize, but I will reserve judgement until I see and drive the new car. When the first MINI came out, I saw it at the Toronto auto show. I thought it was cute, maybe a bit overdone, and WAY too expensive. Then I went for a test drive, and that was that! I am now on my second MINI and if the new one drives better, I will get a third. I think one of the problems with updating this car is the fact that with the original, there was a novelty factor, and the new model is no longer as “different”from the crowd as the original was. However, I still like what I have seen so far.
I can’t wait to see the real thing so I can get a full on comparison, but so far my major complaint is that the new car looks like it just stepped out of a cartoon. The headlamps are a little bit too big and set a little bit too far apart (so that the car, from head-on, now looks walleyed) and the wheel wells have grown to comic proportion. I wish the MCS had grills instead of the gaping hole of blackness that it does, and I wish that the hood scoop was placed a little closer in proportion to where the current one is (even if it is a fake), but overall those are small complaints compared to the headlamps.
Despite my initial disgust at the interior from grainy spy photos, I have to say that it looks quite good (with the exception of the climate controls… please just go to something simple and not-too-cute in the future), and the colour line with dash options are extremely exciting. Finally the interior can be as customized as the exterior! Absolutely wonderful!
As for the technical specifications, I am very excited about the fuel consumption listed for the new engines, as well as the promised smoothness of the torque band.
I’m currently looking to get my first Mini. Will it be an ’06 Cooper S with JCW or an ’07 Cooper S? I’m not yet decided. Only more information will tell.
Meanwhile, for those who have this information, some questions:
1. Does the new ‘S’ retain the distinctive backfiring when downshifting?
2. Are there any plans for mirrors that automatically dip when reversing?
3. Will the current wheels fit the new car?
4. Does anyone have a picture of the display in the new tachometer? Is it easier to read the speed in there now?
5. I know that the new car gets around the ‘Ring 15 seconds faster than the old car: does anyone have actual times?
6. It looks as though there is a chrome line exterior package for the new car, and this is what is shown on all the photos (including chrome surrounds for the headlamps). Is this the case, or is that chrome standard? If this chrome is an option, what does the car look like without it?
<blockquote>…but I somehow doubt we’ll shortly see a menu button (even though it could be nicely centered in the radio control circle).</blockquote>
That should say MODE button. Cause that one is awesome and I use it all the time when the radio starts to suck.
Dislikes (assume everything else can live with or like):
1. Big nose (lose the extra 2.7 inches)
2. Why get rid of LED on toggles (what a great innovation on current MINI)
3. Wings AC a bit much, like the wing idea but the subtle AC wing of the current car is better executed for its discreetness.
4. Black plastic trim around the bottom looks awkward and makes the car look too high and the wheels too small.
5. Sits too high.
6. New alloys are horrible, put a little more effort into them.
7. Colors are boring.
8. Getting rid of rear controls on 2-spoke steering wheel (Bring them back!!)
9. Rear hatch grab handle way too big.
10. Black honeycomb “intake” looks unfinished and reminds me of all the cheap and nonfuntional honeycomb on the front of current VWs and Audis.
11. Fake inlet on bonnet a bad mistake, ususally only American cars and some Japanese put that fake stuff on, NOT a BMW product.
12. Fogs too BIG….approaching Pontiac/Cadillac size.
Like the interior w/NAV (as long as option for smaller speedo next to tach) but really thinking I will keep my ’02 forever now and my next car probably won’t be an R56. It is not love at first site like my current MINI. While the car looks basically the same, they missed the details which is what made the R53 so appealing. Too bad.
On the topic of colours: Mini, if you’re listening, why so few? Honestly, do we need so many non-colours (blacks, greys?) These are supposed to be fun cars! If you don’t think that the market will bear a lot more colours, or that it is financially sound, why not offer a program where we can pay a bit more for the colours we want, sort of like BMW exclusive (only Mini priced). Who around here would not smile at a lime green Mini or an orange Mini, or even a nice purple Mini? Let’s REALLY let people have cars as unique as theyh are! Leave the boring colours for the boring luxury cars 🙂
The outside of the car is perfect – a great evolution of the current. The inside looks sharper and the seats better. I love the colour changing lights. I love the red splashes of interior trim.
I can’t stand the centre stack – why WHY did they spoil the car with this? It also seems with the nav integrated into the central speedo there won’t be a twin dial behind the wheel option 🙁 pitty.
Look forward to seeing one in the flesh – hope they subtly change the centre stack….PLEASE MINI!!!
I like reading all the different opinions. It’s good to see a lot of people like it but I’m afraid it’s not for me. Having had an 02 Cooper and currently an 04 MCS and an 05 MCS w/auto transmission I can say that I don’t care for any of the changes, Nope not a single one. I do think the front of the MCS is sort of handsome but still is not as good as the first generation. The first two years of the Cooper were the best with it’s fat chrome bumper inserts. I hate the interior of the new car. The current large speedo is so nicely designed. Why stuff all the audio controls in it? The center stack looks hodge podge. All the exterior lights look too big and i hate the rear bumper lower grill and fog lights. The scale of everything looks a little heavy handed (sorta GM-esque). Too bad. It’s still cute enough and does look like a MINI but our 04 MCS will stick around with us for a long time. It is a wonderful car.
I dont know. I feel like the exterior it too contrived.
Like there were too many people “discussing” and “debating” on what should be done. I see these compromises in the design. especially the exterior. that tension in the meeting room. voting on how angular this and that should be. I can see it. Not good. too much of a compromise. Admittedly, they have new EU regulations to follow..but still I just know that they tried justa little too hard to make it ‘evolutionary’. I hate it when people try too hard.
<blockquote> I wish the MCS had grills instead of the gaping hole of blackness that it does</blockquote>
The question is, how much blacker could the gaping hole be? The answer is none. None blacker.
Seriously though, I’m not a big fan of the new look. The windows are shorter; that combined with the larger bonnet and larger wheel arch trim make the car look smushed–sort of like someone left a Hummer on the roof for a couple of days.
I love the new customization options for the interior, but that center stack looks so tacky.
The new performance is about the only thing that would make me consider one of these; I’ll be interested to see what they do with the JCW, but as for the new MCS with it’s nonfunctional slotted hood–no thank you. I’m so glad I bought a 2006…
The real test of this update will be the public’s reaction. Will people buy the car in great numbers or will it flop? I predict it will be a success. I didn’t think the MINI would fly because of the price, but it really is a premium automobile and a lot of fun. This will not change, in fact I expect the new car will be even more fun. As far as the price, sure, you can get cheaper cars, but none that are as much fun to drive and as much fun to be seen in. There are faster cars, but none that get the attention the MINI does, and I think it was a good move for BMW to keep the changes to a minimum. Most people may not even know it’s a new model, but they will sure know it’s a MINI. I love it. All of it. I will buy it.
I like the 2007 and the engine improvement alone is enough to make me choose a 2007 over a 2006. I would prefer not to have the usual first-model-year issues, but I am going to the MINI dealer tomorrow to talk about getting a 2007.
I just realized why so many people think the center stack looks toylike! It has Mr. Potatohead styling. All the controls look similar to Mr. Potatohead’s features stuck on a flat black panel. To bad they aren’t interchangable, THAT would be cool!
Hear, hear Nathaniel Salzman! I always seem to agree with your general design aesthetic and this post is no different.
Am I deranged to think that the new Toyota Yaris has a more subtle center stack than this gen MINI? All I could do, from the first spy photos until now, is think of ways to tone down the design of that center column. I would personally love to drive this car, but I’d rather have no radio, heat, a/c, or nav at all than this.
How about adding a “Controls Delete†option to the configurator for those of us willing to go without?
…okay,…enough already with the center console. I know that Gabe had stated in this post that we are free to type in our likes and dislikes on the R56;and that the representives of MINI would read it. Therefore,I want to write to any of the MINI reps.(with the power)who might be reading this to CHANGE THE DAMN’ CENTER CONSOLE so that the rest of the world can have some peace…BTW,great job on the R56. No complaints;however,I do have one question: Will their be a JCW package(of any kind)for the R56 MC? Thank you…M. Dillon.
…ooops! meant to type,”…there be a JCW package…”,instead of,”…their be a JCW package…”. Go sleepy and cranky reading all of those,”death to the center console”,comments…

having to get Chrome mirror caps)
3. Front Grill Chrome look
4. Overall shape the same (except the bonet, but ok as
safety was a factor in new design)
5. Sports seat look nice
6. 16″ Bridge Spoke wheels
7. New Yellow Paint Color (Mellow Yellow)
8. New NAV Display (because without it, don’t like
Speedo)
Don’t like:
1. Turnsignal inside headlight aray dome (could grow
into it)
2. New Speedo design & Audio/display control
intergration
3. No more Leatherette upholstery
4. No sperate(stand alone) clock
5. No Two-Spoke Steering wheel for the US Market
6. Mini Logo wings desgin for controls
7. No Chrono Package available
8. New Air vent design, sticking out from dash
9. Anthracite no longer available for dash and trim
10. New Glove box design door opening
11. Elimination of needle gauges and replaced with
“Idiot lights” for Fuel, Engine Temp.
12. Only one option for 15″ Wheels Rims (15″ Star
Spooler – Ugly.)
13. Toogle switches on Roof liner above mirror
14. Too few “Non Metallic Paint” color choices
15. Start/Stop Engine ignition (yes it’s an option, so
I suppose a “dislike” is not needed.
I sure would like to know what that knob is for on the drivers side door. Outside Mirror adjust? If so, add that to the list of “don’t like.”
S Cooper – Like:
1. Twin Turbo
2. Fog light size/design
3. Increased Horsepower
Dislike:
1. All black Radiator Grill (and all black Air intake)
2. Only two 16″ Wheel rims avialable (and S-Winder is
ugly)
3. Interior (Same stuff as the Cooper)
4. Dark Silver Paint color no longer available
5. Very limited choice of Non-metallic colors
6. Rear black apron mesh inserts
7. No chrome boot hatch lift handle
Will the new MINI have Window Up one-touch feature?
Without seeing the R56 in the flesh, I have to worry about some angles not looking good anymore. The current car looks great from every angle. The new one appears to have some shots that make it look awkward- like the directly side profile that emphasizes the larger nose, narrower greenhouse, bulging boot, and jacked up suspension.
It looks like a MINI, just missing something in the proportions…which may be fixed with the “traveller” model…
Interior is nice though. Materials seem much better, spare of course the center stack. Change it to black plastic and I’ll be fully on board. But I’ll meet it in the flesh first.
One question- is leatherette gone? It’s my choice for seats….Gabe?
MINI may have pushed my into a used ’05-’06 MCS or a new 325i… But my 2004 MINI Cooper will be around forever!
Hey, as long as the car is still fun to drive, I love it. When I sit in the driver’s seat, start the engine, put the car in gear, take my foot off the clutch and toe the gas, if my face lights up with a smile reminiscent of a teenager exposed to “truly good driving” for the first time, it’s golden. The first time I ever drove a MINI, the feeling was unforgettable. I went through 2 1/2 tanks of gas in the first two days.
I’ll probably buy one of the new cars, that’s just the way I am. They will still turn heads and make people smile from the sidewalk, they will still growl and buzz like only a MINI can, and from the sound of it, in a more aggressive and less “pissed off bumble bee” way, and they look like they can handle possibly even better than the current car, which is very impressive… kudos, MINI. I love the car, down to the last detail, call me crazy…
That being said… why can’t I still grab a chrome grille with the MCS? That really would clinch the deal for me…
The 07 looks just as sexy as the old. I’d love to trade my 01 Miata on a new drop top but cost, compared to a new Miata, makes that very hard to justify + reliability of 07 will be a question mark based on Mini’s history. And, at $30k for a nicely equiped S convert, one can almost reach a Honda S2000. Maybe I’ll win the Lotto.
My biggest problem with the center console controls are the two silver plastic dials sticking out on either side of the MINI logo-shaped ventilation controls. These tacky-looking ear shaped things are some sort of air temperature/flow dials, but I can’t tell from the pictures.
I will reserve full judgement until I see it in person but I like what I see so far and I know it will be a success. I cannot wait to drive it. My colleague here wants me to trade my SB/S ’06 MCS Quicksilver for one but I haven’t had time to have fun with him yet. So I won’t know until I drive it if I’m going to unti I experience it.
Nothing in the pictures or details is offensive to me, so I’m waiting until I see the car in person to make a final judgement. I am hopeful for improvements in a few areas… mainly the seats.
I had a deposit down before I even saw it. Had to get rid of my ’04 because of the seat lumbar positioning and I miss my Mini! The seats in the R56 look to have much better support.
Assume everyting not listed here as something I like.
Things to consider:
1. Rear fog lights on the S could be improved. I like the Cooper single center light better. Another option would be to have the rear fogs in the same place, but as half circles at either edge to follow the lines. Otherwise they look like an afterthought.
2. Center console… Not liking it so much. It may look better in person.
3. Ditto in the integrated radio into the speedo.
4. Headlights look good except the turn signal could have had clear glass and an orange bulb.
5. LED’s for the rear lights
Potential Options or standard equipment:
1. ARM REST should come with the car, period. Possible upgrade would be for a armrest with storage inside.
2 Could have increased storage under the dash instead of a filler plate.
3. Tail lights could have a “clear” option and/or LED’s see above.
4. a NO CHROME option for the outside. I dunno, the less chrome, the sportier it looks IMHO.
5. Colors? Why not Jet Black and a real White? You are already painting the roofs and mirrors those colors…
6. More stripe options
7. More “standard” wheel options – IE no additional cost, or at the most $500.
8. Camber adjustments for the front and rear.
9. Air conditioned seats for those of us in the hot climates.
10. No or low dust brake pad option. IE: ceramics etc.
11. Rear seats could be removable
12.Rear wheel drive so I can throttle steer around the track.
13. Self service cutomizations. IE: the owner can program daytime running lights or not, auto lock, auto lights on, auto DSC off, auto sport on etc.
14. Remote start option
15. Remote control … Just kidding… kinda. 🙂
16. Seatbelt locking so you can cinch yourself in real tight.
The whole new design disappointed me.
While the cheif designer “Frank Stevson” has gone,
the new team got hard work in modify the original design. But all the modifications were done painstakingly.Especially the interior control interface,it goes to far and loses the tradition of MINI.What we can expect is..the new engine of 07 model.
Deeply hope that BMW MINI group spare no effort in keep the fame of MINI and will last long.
<blockquote>Don’t like:
1. Turnsignal inside headlight aray dome (could grow
into it)</blockquote>
I think that the turn signal is so close to the headlight that oncoming traffic will not be able to see them when the headlights are on. I think that this is a very poor design on MINIs part and a potential safety hazard.
This can be seen in one of the videos here in motoringfile where an R56 is driving towards the camera with the signal on, but you really have to look hard to see it.
I have experienced this same phenomenon many times on the roads with other brands. When at an intersection you have absolutley no idea of the intentions of the other car. That is of course if they choose to use their signals at all.
The MC is soooo much better looking than the MCS. The MCS’ rear is just ugly. Those giant stuck-on fog lights are….well….I just threw up in my mouth a little. I’m not a fan of the large side lights either.
What is with the big bulge in the middle of the seat bottoms? What? Are all MINI drivers male? I think that would really annoy me in practice.
Kudos to MINI for finally giving the Cooper a 6th gear. It really needed it.
All in all though, I’m glad I have an 06 on the way.
I agree that the turn signal will be very difficult to see at night – the headlights being on will blur it out. This is an all too common problem these days. More color choices (other than 3 different silvers) would be a big plus. The new Laser Blue looks terrific. Otherwise, I’m fine with the exterior – nice evolution of the car.
I hate the center stack, like others have said the temperature controls look like a Fisher-Price radio. 🙁 I hope that a chrono package is available as I am not on board with the over done center speedo and I rue the loss of a coolant temperature gauge. The rest of the interior looks fine but I’m hoping that there is still sufficient storage space in the car to pigeon hole smallish items. My MINI is a daily driver, not a garage queen so I need places for various small items. The new seats look great and the ability to change the interior lighting color seems cool. The push button start and having to put the key fob into the dash is just stupid.
I think the turbo will be fantastic and I hold out hope that the Cooper will finally have sufficient hp to get up and go even with the AC on. Hopefully the S will get 35+ MPG US highway and the Cooper 40+.
OK, I’ve changed my mind. I think MINI has done a good job preserving and refining the best features of the car that appeal to me (and everyone else from what I can see here). I could probably own one of these some day if they ever fix the center spedo and goofy looking controls in the center console. That seems to be the only serious mistake they made…so far.
Things I’m looking foreward to:
-A little more HP with a LOT more torque off the bottom (plus the mod potential of a turbo).
-JCW sized brakes come stock on the S.
-GP-style rear suspention compontents on the new cars.
-I like the aero kit look… so I like the black grille on the front.
Bad:
-Center stack (though I actually am one of those who like the big speedo)… the stuff below it looks cheesy. I’m hoping there are some changes here, at least in the silver plastic. Maybe a chrome kit will clean things up a bit. I’m hoping.
-Non-functional (for now) scoop on the hood. There’s gotta be something this slot can eventually do…
-No leatherette! I guess I’ll have to splurge for real leather.
The stuff that doesn’t matter as it will most likely get changed within a week or two of delivery:
-Ride height. The car needs to be dropped an inch or so (looks tall). Hello Eibach… H&R?
-Wheels. I used to like S-lites. The white ones pictured look a little funny. Where are the lug nuts? I’ll bee looking for a nice set of 18″s fairly soon… but I’m now leaning towards web-spokes as stock (or maybe I’ll splurge for the R90’s).
Overall, I like the changes (and sometimes change is tough) with the interior. However I do have some issues.
1. I don’t like the way the two tone dash looks in the one photo of the Red MINI. a) it seams to be backwards; the red should be on top and the gray should be on the bottom. b) have a two tone dash like pictured is strange, it adds too many colors to the interior; it makes it difficult to match a seat with the interior. Having too many too many different colors in the interior is distracting to say the least. Please make sure you allow an owner to have enough options of what they can change and where they can change it with regards to color selections.
2. I don’t like the overhead switches for the windows. I actually like the fact that they are down below in my ‘Vert. If I leave my ‘Vert with the top down, I put up the windows. This prevent unwanted hands from getting into the car. You can’t reach over the window and down to the toggle switches easily (unless you want to impale yourself on glass). Having the toggle switches up high means you can unlock your MINI Vert just by reaching over to the switch? NOT GOOD!!
Is it confirmed what is in fact the function of the overhead switches? Remember there’s still a bunch of these switches down below. Even if you’re right, that doesn’t mean the convertable version of the R56 (which is still at least a year away, I think) will have all the switches in the same place.
Center console is killing me. too much wasted space. Looks like they had a summer intern from the 6th grade design it. Same mistake as with the cupholders from the current version.
Steering wheel is over designed. It’s change for changes sake.
I like the door panels and overall dash design.
the face of the MCS is good. The rear bumper is too busy.
More colors please!
At this point our ’07 will be ordered in the Dark Grey for lack of another color wife and I both like. We’d really like a non-metalic Hyper blue. I’d like a non-metalic BRG. Yellow color’s good, but need more like it.
KILL THE CHAMPAGNE COLOR TODAY. NOW. THIS IS NOT AN 80’S ACURA LEGEND OR A MERC DIESEL.
Drop the Silver too. That was the color of the new Millinium 7 years ago. That boat has sailed, and it was never destined for the Mini anyway. I prefer the Pepper White to the Alpine White being asked for but white’s not in the cards for the S anyway. And while we’re at it, why limit colors to Cooper and Cooper S. BAD IDEA. Dislike the metalic Black. non-metalic would work. Basically, politely ask the colour specialist to retire and hire the guy from Volkswagen who mixed up the R32 blue, New Beetle Deep Yellow, TT Putty Grey -amazing how nobody in recent history figured out that if you drop metal flake from silver it makes a cool color. Those were good colors. Would it help if Gabe started a thread where owners submitted existing colors from other marques? This is what non-purist car restorers do. They go in and tell the PPG guy, I want that yellow off of the 84 Prelude 2.0.
We’ll likely add wide-assed offset stripes after purchase. Really dislike the new ’06 “U” stipes. What about alternative sunroof decals for the silver roof to match like the white one does.
’07 likes:
Engine (mileage, power, torque, PSA heritage over Chrysler YAY!). No added weight. Looks like rear seats are getting less econo look, right?
’06 dislikes that BMW can still correct for ’07:
Make better sport seats. The wide-butted PlaySchool pattern in the seat back stitching is the hugest of turn offs. This is a place where a Recaro clone would help generate more love by Mini owners, and more well spent money to dealers (they make the money on options, right?). Would love the sport seats from our Z3 in the Mini!!!
Gabe, do you intend to compile the common themes from above, and direct them to Mini? There are a lot constructive criticisms here re new car which BMW et al should be made aware of, or am I naive in thinking BMW’s listening posts will have not picked up on this already? If they have, do you know of any official or unofficial reaction from the company?
Could this be the longest comment section ever for a MF atricle? there sure is a healthly amount of quality comments.
I’ll keep my comments short. like the interior, like the exterior. Center stack could use some work. Like the speedo size with the nav. not a fan of the a/c controls, yet. I look forward to seeing it in person.
There is many nice improvements such as the new engine with its improved mileage and torque. But the speedo and the center stack are foul . The way the speedo is stuck on the dash changes the looks an not for the better. I also prefer a standard radio that can easly be changed if i so desire.
The interior is looking a little strange to me, and I want to know about aftermarket HU in that. Unless they fix the issues with the iPod hookup, I am going to want a different HU. I do like the lighting options, that seems really slick.
You really need to bring back the 2 spoke sterring wheel with the controls on the back!!!!!!
The car is growing on me, minus the wings shaped AC controls … that makes an otherwise solid and great looking interior … well … toy like.
The black trim around the wheels increasing in width do not look good and make the car seem higher off the ground and lose its sex appeal 😉
Otherwise I think all else will grow on me … the MC however came out better looking than the MCS.
But I am sure it will still sell by the bucketload especially now that it has been more Americanized.
All in all, two thumbs way up.
I love everything about the R56, except the center console. I may change my mind once I see it in person.
I just wish they would offer an all black version.
I like new engine of R56 Cooper S, but more like R53 better looking!
well….maybe classical mini is the best choice for minimad.
in general, i like it.
no it’s not the mini we have all become so obsessed with over the last five years, and because of that i think there has been an enormous amount of “reaction.” i don’t think any of us will be able to fairly judge the car until we are able to drive it, but knowing bmw and mini i would highly doubt it will be anything short of a brilliant drive. that said, there are a number of cosmetic issues which do indeed bug the #*$% out of me.
3. the rear spoiler looks a bit cheapy too. perhaps it’s just the pictures, but it seems a bit plastic-y with its two piece design. it also squares off the back of the s too much and adds to a boxy feel in the rear.
on a positive note, i think the new nav looks amazing, the new 16″ star wheel shown on the s in all the press photos looks great, the center twin exhaust alos looks fantastic, keyless entry/start/stop is a great touch and the new seats also seem like a real step up.
you’ve got a really great problem on your hands MINI: you designed and built a car that people have a real relationship with and a genuine attachment to. i don’t think you could revise this car in any way, shape or form and not get some backlash – but many of these changes are pretty drastic and your user base are the most obsessive group around! as long as the car is a blast to drive i am sure many of these complaints will fade…..quickly. until then, think black plastic for that center stack! ; )
Jeez…get over the hood scoop guys.
So it’s a stylistic embellishment – so what??
I just hope that when ordering the Autoclimate option they keep the dot matrix reading in the center instead of the dial.
i’ve bought 2 MCS’s, an early 03 which was traded in for an 06. i think MINI did a decent job evoloving the design. i really do. excellent job updating the interior and retaining the design themes from the current model.
my criticisms will echo much of what i expect will be listed by other’s.
the biggest mistake is the fake hood scoop. it’s absolutley the worst thing BMW could have done to the car. it’s contrived and doesn’t belong if it doesn’t serve a purpose. the MINI has sunk to “ricer” levels of aesthetic and i HATE it. unless the new “JCW” car is an absolute stormer i will not buy another S because of the scoop.
ideas i feel less strong about are, the center stack and the grill on the S. i like the body color slats on the current model and will miss them on the S. the large swaths of black plastic in the center stack looks tacky. the NAV helps a lot but i certainly hope there’s an alloy or body color type trim option in the ala carte list. also in the center stack the “wing” HVAC controls look like a caricature of the current design, that’s NOT a good thing.
i think that’s it.
The dislikes:
BCNU,
Rob in Dago
I guess when I see it in person i’ll comment. It’s hard to truely judge this without seeing it up close.
Some second thoughts.
Likes:

Just my $0.02
While Gabe has provided us with many juicy details we won’t REALLY know until we can see it in the flesh and drive it.
Likes:
1) Opening rear sunroof
2) New dash & interior trim colors
3) New seats & seat colors
4) More refined motor
5) New exhaust tips & bumper exhaust integration
6) New rear spoiler
7) New MCS lower rear facia & bumper (except chrome trim)
8) New switch panel in headliner
9) More power, broader powerband & better MPG
10) Weight loss
11) New NAV layout
12) Bluetooth integration
13) Changeable interior lighting
14) HD Radio
15) Single upper grille & integration into bumper
16) Increased use of technology throughout
Dislikes:
1) Center speedo w/ integrated radio
2) Chrome trim around MCS upper & lower grille
3) Make traditional slatted upper grille an option on MCS
4) New S Lite wheels
5) Less contour/character to hood
6) Non-functional hood scoop
7) Loss of headlights integrated into hood
8) Higher stance
9) Front fogs too large
10) Loss of supercharger
11) Longer front overhang/nose (Booo euro pedestrian standards)
12) HUGE side markers
13) Ugly rear taillights
14) Turn signals integrated into headlights
15) New side mirror shape
16) Center stack!!
17) Separate CD Player
18) Color selection (No flat BRG, solid black, overall lack of color & variety)
19) C pillar design & diffusers
Overall grade a B-
<blockquote>You really need to bring back the 2 spoke sterring wheel with the controls on the back!!!!!!</blockquote>
All the test drive reviews I’ve read so far have been for the MCS, does anyone when we can expect a review of the Cooper?
can someone post a pic of the “giant sports badgeâ€ÂÂ? i can’t seem to find it.
Likes; Any real improvements in quality, comfort, performance/mileage and safety!
Dislikes: Stupid statements, such as our current Minis are obsolete from someone who has only looked at some photos or read something in print!Get Serious!!
i like the things that are cool.
i don’t like the things that suck.
I actually like the car.
Also it’s very ironic that a shark is used on the OK MCS preview site … because in some ways it feels as it is “jumping the shark”
I like it, I want one.
Sadly, I want a JCW to replace my late ’02 MCS and I can’t believe I’m gonna have to wait a year.
Might have to buy something else instead.
I like it…I’ll buy one…a Cooper. We still haven’t seen Oxygen Blue, have we???
I will have to see it in person, then I can tell you:)
I think I am over it. I was expecting a more radical re-design and Mini didn’t at all deliver on their promise to improve the interior quality. I am going with an Audi A3.
I look at the car and only have 3 words:
I. Want. One.
1) I do not like the back esp. the grille & fog lamp layout. I like the previous one.
2) Rear light proportion is okey.
3)I do not like the proportion of the center speedo.I like the previous one.
4) Front is okey.
5) The MCS looks feminish now compared to the previous.
Love that
Hate this
Too cheesy looking
ooooo…must have option
Can that be retro-fitted?

Worst center console ever!
((( Bring back a REAL “BLACK”!!! )))
Astro Black (REALLY DARK BLUE) just doesn’t cut it!
I’ll just keep my obsolete 03…
The thing I wil miss most are the little details that seem to be thrown out for pedestrian safety or whatever (cost cutting).
The cleveage around the headlights, the vents under the wipers, and the slatted grill on the S.
I think the new car has lost some of its character and charm, not a lot but I feel that the attention to detail has been lost.
I appreciate any gesture to create more passenger room and comfort in the car.
Mini (Non-S) Like:
1. New Foglight design/size
2. Return of Chrome Boot Hatch lift handle(without
having to get Chrome mirror caps)
I am sure I will think of more later.
LET’S MOTOR!
The video is located in “2007 MINIs in motion” The best example of turn signal visibility occures at approximately 3:28 into the video.
I’m buying a 2007 S.
We’ll see…
Overall, I like the changes (and sometimes change is tough) with the interior.
Where’s the SMG gearbox?
I look forward to seeing it in person.
another option – keep the ability to get darker wheels – anthracite or black please without a huge markup.
There is many nice improvements such as the new engine with its improved mileage and torque. But the speedo and the center stack are foul . The way the speedo is stuck on the dash changes the looks an not for the better. I also prefer a standard radio that can easly be changed if i so desire.

Mmmmmm turbo!!…That’ll be my key buying factor when it comes time trade up!
