Grassroots Motorsports is running a fantastic series of articles (aka a blog) on their 2007 Cooper S. The numbers they’ve seen are plenty impressive so far: 174 horsepower, 197 lb.-ft. of torque and a 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds.

GRM is a great magazine. The numbers for the ’07-S look good…real good. I can’t wait to drive one.
Took delivery of a cooper s on monday. Bloody awesome piece of kit. Has ferocious accelaration with the 18 inch works alloys. I didn’t think it was as fast as that however. Crazy machine. Can’t wait for the upgrade to see what happens to that time.
No surprise to me. My last JCW(2005) with a UNICHIP didn’t feel much different from the two ’07 MCSs I’ve driven. The stage one JCW will be great and stage two should be off the hook!
ummm…0-60 in 5.7s generally puts a car in the low 14sec range in the 1/4-mi. somehow i severely doubt that 0-60 stat.
maybe they meant 6.7s?

I don’t doubt the stat. Per from Grassroots races on a regular basis (usually a top PAX’ing autocrosser) and he knows how to launch, having done ProSolo.
Good read, rather fun chronicle of a new R57 owner. It will be interesting to read the continuation of the entries on that url.
maybe if he had drag slicks on. i’ve still never heard of a 5.7s 0-60 car that does a 1/4mi in over 14.5s–even if this thing is a torque monster compared to the 53…
anyone have any real world 1/4-mi times for the ’07?
i could care less about the 1/4mi time (like most of us here), just using it as a discrepancy reference.
0-60 in 5.7 seconds…really!? I thought the factory never told the true 0-60!
here’s more discussion:

5.4s? i think someone’s stopwatch is broken.
I just counted the issues of GRM that I’ve received. I’m going to have to renew my subscription now.
I am a bit confused. Is it 174 wheel horsepower or is it dyno corrected back to the flywheel? If so, what is the drivetrain loss percentage that people are using for the MCS?
It’s definitely got some power. Took a test-drive yesterday. I was surprised at the torque-steer, actually. But over-all, I like it. Not sure I like it enough to trade-in my ’03 MCS, though.
Could GRM have received a “ringer”–a car that by just random variability has a very high HP?
quick calc’s suggest an r56 would need 210+hp for a time that fast.
that’d be a little more than a ‘ringer’, imo.
but, i’ll eat my words when someone else can post a realworld time that quick.
doubtful, considering the many other r56 reviews w/ 6.2+s 0-60’s.
If you want people to take notice then publish a 0-60 time that no other reviewer magazine has published.
In my 1400 miles w/ the 07′ turbo: It is certainally as fast (or more) than either of my two former MCS Works car’s. Based on informal timing from many years driving very familar remote backroads (driving several BMW,s Audi’s & Mini’s) the R56 is exceptional. Rolling acceleration: the torque is very impressive & in fact overwhelms the car to a certain extent (torque steer & loss of traction.)
The good news IMO the turbo Mini more than makes up for the annoying T steer w/ shear viseral pleasure. Getting the tires to hook-up is a bit more challenging, slowish learning curve, but worth the wait.
Now the punch line: in almost every sense the R56 is a better car than the one it replaced ( I am a 2x MCS owner w/ lot’s of serious behind the wheel experience and I LOVED my former Mini’s.) Not that everyone is going to like the new car, it is more akin to a BMW than it’s old brother. Perhaps too refined for its own good but I could never go back. The R56 is fast & handles like a champ.
I agree and am on my second R53. My first was a 2003 and my current one is of 2006 vintage. My 2007 R56 is on it’s way very shortly and I was very very close to keeping my 2006. After getting back into the R56 I always seem to really want it more. The refinement and much more aggressive low end torque make it even more of a blast to drive. I have had customers say that they like their 2006’s better though even though none of those people have driven an R56. I wonder what would happen if they did?
The surface, temp and humidity have a lot of to do with it. It was a nice, pleasant low humidity day (65 degrees, 40%) and I tested the car on a piece of asphalt that has a good amount of grip. I retested there (once again using my Vericom VC2000) on a warmer/more humid day (80/80%) and it was low 6’s. Low 6’s also on a cooler day, but on a worse piece of asphalt…the key to all of it is the first 60ft, getting the FWD car to hook up takes some delicate footwork and just the right RPM.
Our car dyno’ed at 174 at the wheels, which is what it’s rated at the crank (not counting that “overboost” function)
