Before you start snickering, MF reader Andy G. just purchased an ’02 MINI that is looking for some help connecting up his Zune.
>Hello, I just purchased a Pre Owned 2002 Mini Cooper S in Dark Silver with White Roof. I own a Zune Media Player and am looking for a way to connect it to the radio. I live in the New York area so the number of stations has made my FM Modulator useless. I have no tape player so cannot use a Tape Adapter. I have a 2002 so cannot have the auxillary jack installed. Also, I have the CD based navigation. Any ideas how I can connect my mp3 player?
I know there has be at least one of you out there that was able to get your your iPod or similiar device connected to your ’02. How did you do it? Did you replace the head unit with one from an ’03 to ’06 so you could use the Aux Port Adapter? Something custom? A crazy part you found an your local auto parts store? Let us know in the comment below!
There are several options for early MINI owners in terms of adding iPod functionality. The one I used was the Dension Ice-Link. While it’s not available in the US anymore, there are other options like Dice that should do the trick.
Not sure about the Zune however.
I search Google and a number of Dension Ice-Links are for sale on Ebay:

HAHA you own a Zune
What’s a Zune? 🙂 J/K
I think you might have missed this at the top of the article.

So please, if you can’t be helpful, then move along.
Also, the Dension won’t work with a Zune. The only connection would be through the headphone jack as far as I know. Something more like a Aux Port adapter is what he would need.
I would start checking the boards or my local club for someone with an ’03 – ’06 head unit laying around after they upgraded, then install the Aux Port adapter. Bonus if you can find a deck from an ’04 or later as it will play mp3 CD’s too.
I agree. A used ’05 or later MINI headunit may be the cheapest route. Get the headunit and then add the Aux port.

It’s the perfect storm.
doesn’t the dice adapter have an aux in port? I am in NC and my Mini is in OK or I would look.
just looked it up online and it says it has an aux input
I third the idea of locating a second hand 03 or later head unit.
Yes it’s a lot of work to get an MP3 player connected (Zune or otherwise), but as you’re discovering there aren’t a whole lot of options for a 2002 build MINI.
and for the price that DICE is going for, you can probably find a used stock head unit. and i second DB’s idea of trying to find a newer one that plays MP3 CDs too.
Mikey the MINI has a part for this specifically:

or

They are a bit pricey at between $80 and $150 US, but at least one of them should work.
Blitzsafe makes an interface that uses the CD Changer port as well. It might be the same thing Mikey is offering. http://www.blitzsafe.com/blitz_catalog/blitz_aux/blitz_aux_list/blitz_mini/blitz_mini.html
I used one on my ’02 and continue to use it on my ’05. Many people distribute blitzsafe stuff, so you can shop around.
àhave never meet anyone that has bought a Zune…
I know you may be weary of buying an fm transmitter, as was I, after owning (and tossing out the window) two iTrips.
However, consider the iPop. It is and extremely powerful fm transmitter, that blows the iTrip out the window.
I love mine, and have never looked back. A plus is that it is portable.

Found an english website of the manufacturer:

perhaps it would be easier to find an ’02 with a factory installed tape deck… 🙂
