We’ve received word from a European source that next week MINI is set to unveil a special edition car for France and some other countries in the EU. Called “The MINI Mat” (we’re not sure about the spelling), the package will feature a checkered interior and mirror covers, plus a special matte black finish. Our source tells us that rather than a ground up custom paint color, the MINI Mat will have a matte layer overlaying the factory black paint. We’re not sure if that’s paint or vinyl, but either way it’ll likely be a sharp looking finish available for the Cooper, Cooper D, Cooper S and JCW. Look for details next week.
The above photo is not the MINI Mat, but it does show how nice looking that matte black finish could look. Original here.

I saw a similar Cooper S at a So. California dealer last week. In that case, the mod was done by the dealership by applying a coat of vinyl. The mark-up was around $3500 for the job. It was matte black over black paint, with black stripes, and an all-black interior.

I seem to remember reading (or hearing on a BimmerCast) that BMW developed a new Matte clear coat for the “Frozen” colors. Perhaps MINI is finally making use of this?

Amigos I got mines done, down here in Puerto Rico I paid $1500 yes I did but everyone else wanted around $2000 to get it painted and guess what some BS warranty. So, I come across this guy and he’s giving 5 yrs on the paper job,you figure where I went then!!! Mine’s is Black Matte all around except the roof I got it done RED yes I copied of this years JCW. Man do I get stopped all the time to inquire about the PAINT Job(LOL) you should see peoples faces when I tell them its 3m Vynil Tape. Anyway I wish I could post the pictures here so if the moderator gives me an email I will do my best to send photos ok

I have one in our showroom right now! People walk right by the Countryman to see it! It is a hot seller…we have done two now and they go pretty quick. Easy to clean…just wash like normal and use windex when you get greasy finger prints.

Hey! That MINI is part of our club: Southern Ontario MINI Club http://www.somc.on.ca. He had it wrapped by the same people who did MINI Durham’s Police Interceptor in flat black for the MINI Canada’s 50th Birthday bash :)

My brother’s a seller here in Belgium and they had a seller’s meeting recently. Somewhere in december.

He took a picture of a matte Countryman displayed, along with 6 other possible colors.
Available @ 2500EUR surplus on the CM, less on other models.

While the car is new, it may look cool but how does this stand up to frequent washing and cleaning?
As well, sooner or later someone is going to try and polish the car and who knows what will happen.
As previous comment, why bother getting a car painted when a vinyl wrap job will be a cheaper option?

That is extraordinarily cool!

If they are also going back to the R50/53 body style, I’m in ;)

I think it will look sharp. How do you clean a finish like that? I already have the model ;-)

It looked smokin. Expensive though.

Sounds similar to the 2010 Frozen Gray BMW M3.
