We’ve asked this question before but as we get closer to the official launch of the car this fall, the realities of what we’ll all be calling this thing become more real. So we want to throw this question out to the MF readers one more time. What would you like to see the name of the MINI crossover vehicle (aka the R60).
Our money is on something relatively simple like MINI X but than again a historically relevant name like the Moke could be appropriate as well.
Sound off in the comment section below. Oh and bonus points if you actually aren’t sarcastic on this one!

“I was going to go with Mini’s Big Mistake.” Yeah, that’s what I called it the first time around.

But if we’re trying not to be sarcastic, how about MUV or Ute. Those sound no worse than Moke. They could also go with Traveller, which seems more likely.

Unfortunately Isuzu already has a “Trooper”… Its got that quasi-Stormtrooper look (moreso in the drawings than the photos, and esp. in Alpine White); Its designed to cart around a whole troop of gremlins (or half a troop of adults); Throw some knobbies and a lugge rack on it and its got that Land Rover thing going on… (Incidently, I saw an X6 on the freeway the other day. I hope the MINI X doesn’t come out as bloated.)

Either way, if life circumstances warranted a full-sized AWD MINI, I’d name mine “Cooper Trooper” :)

Well lets start by saying that if the Moke name goes anywhere near this Not-Mini I will know for sure that Mini has lost its soul and is nothing other than just another car company that will prostitute the namesakes history for economic gain. I wonder how many dealerships I can get banned from if that name is used!

For a name think simpler is better, while looking at this I try to envision how it will be used and exactly what its standing for. It has no historical precedence so think they should steer clear of names used before. Its not an off road warrior so think anything related to its rally days would be the wrong name. I think that this is aimed purely at small families (that only need 4 seats), think they should find something that works with this owner group. I personally would say the Mini X would be my choice for this.

Having said that still have to wonder just how many 4 seat SUV’s will sell. I am sure the thrashing of everything Sir Alec stood for is worth the sales. I can only hope that once Mini spends many millions bringing this car to market that it doesn’t cheapen the rest of the brand as its minority market share is nothing other than a financial black hole.

”
Lastly, BMW may be looking to continue the expansion of their British brand MINI, with the development of the MINI SpaceBox. We are not sure what this could be. After all, the upcoming MINI Crossover is expected to be about four meters long, only five centimeters longer than the Clubman. Perhaps the SpaceBox is something akin to the Volkswagen Bus. A true “MINIvan,” if you will.

It’s funny, but it seems mostly American’s that are upset by any deviation from their perception of the MINI brand. Here in the UK, the original MINI is part of our heritage.

It was only a few years ago that everyone was complaining the new BMW MINI was nothing like the original.

Personally I dislike the idea of MINI producing cars that may hurt the company, because it means the support/development of MINIs could also be hurt.

I don’t see how anyone could complain the crossover isn’t in keeping with MINI, because my R53 couldn’t be more different than any of my numerous Mini’s I owned.
Apart from the general shape and name, my R53 has never had a bypass hose fail, track rod ends/CV joints/et al wear away every year, leak water through the floor, etc.

I loved my Minis, and now embrace the new MINI without a second thought. I personally don’t like the actual styling of the crossover, but wouldn’t be as harsh as many posters on this site.

If they did call it the Moke, I would be glad they’re cashing in on the name (or selling their soul as it’s been put). Rather that, than not cashing in and it failing, thus losing them probably a whole lot of money they couldn’t afford in this climate.

Sorry to be dull but why not “Minor” another classic Issigonis car which brought decent handling qualities to the family motorist, surely this car could do the same to the small SUV Market.Definately not my cup of tea car wise though.
This would leave Moke name available for something more in line with its predecessor, A fun runabout for those Caribbean Island holidays

KipperFillets I do hear where you are coming from, while I thought the R50 was still larger than what it had to be the new Mini did lend itself to many of the same principles that Sir Alec supported, although one could argue that he would have never supported a luxury vehicle of any kind.

The US does have a really decent classic Mini community, and Mini has done a good job of trying to bring the classic and new Mini communities closer together. I can guarantee you one thing a huge number of the classic owners will be totally hostile towards a Mini SUV. Also add to the fact that this car is still developing a huge split in the new Mini community in what is Mini’s biggest market, I can’t see this as a positive move.

Think the best two names to me so far in the discussion would be Mini X and Mini Monte (although I have no idea what a soft-roader luxury SUV has to do with the name heh)

Let’s go back to the Moke namesake since the Moke was built to go offroad (designed for the Brit military to drop out of aircraft)…and I wish people’d stop whining about it. It’ll make money and it really isn’t all that big and make MINI more money.

Wolfgang can you explain how their is any relationship between a ultra stripped down very basic Mini and an 3k lbs luxury SUV with what will be almost no offroad capability? I for one would love to drop a R60 out of a aircraft ;)

While I expect them to see more than a few (afterall Americans have shown that they buy into the larger is better concept). My issue isn’t with the size of the vehicle as much as it is that this development goes directly against everything Sir Alec stood for, and against a majority of what BMW Mini said it stood for. There is also no guarantee that Mini will sell enough of these to offset the development costs (while I expect they will) which could mean actually less fund for the entire brand.

What’s happened to the commenting on this site? Honestly Gabe, I don’t know why you bother anymore. The general tone of negativity is disheartening to say the least.

Oh, and I think a lot of the negativity is because of a couple of things. 1) is the obvious contradiction of ‘upsizing’ a MINI and sticking an SUV type of label on it. It really seems to go against what MINI has stood for. And, 2) some of us are really just upset that it’s going to be the only way to get an AWD MINI…BMW’s ego wouldn’t allow them to just license the Getrag designed system and give us a real, all weather, pocket rocket…and they didn’t want to invest the money themselves.

Mark I do agree that there is quite a bit of negativity surrounding the R60. Mini has pushed forward with this development despite the complete knowledge that this is driving a huge split in its largest market community.

I have no doubt that Mini can make great cars and the R60 is likely to be ok, I however have a major disagreement that turning its back on Sir Alec and a sizable portion of its community is a good thing. I have been thinking for a while that the enthusiast phase of Mini is slowly diminishing, partly due to Mini’s own success and partially due to its product development. I am pretty sure the typical R60 driver will be a typical self indulgent driver ignorant and uncaring about the Mini community and a good size of the community will no doubt never accept a SUV in their ranks. Compare this to the sales in a very heavy bit of direct competition and I think the R60 will never be more than a bit player in the total Mini yearly sales.

…well, since the MINI suv will be a hit for the hip-hop crowd who want to,”pimp on a budget”,MINI should call it the following: MINI XL. The,”Biggie Smalls”,of SUVs’.

I am really tired of everyone getting off topic. The topic is what should Mini call the Cross over vehicle, not why you think it will hurt the brand or you think it is ugly. Come on people, keep it productive!

jesus christ we have a bunch on whiners on here…

who cares if they release the R60 ? they need to expand their product line in order to make a profit, im sure we are all mature enough to know how this works…

if you don’t like the R60… well why dont you just whine about it on various websites or forums… ohh wait…

lets try that again.

if you don’t like the R60… how about you just let it be ? if you don’t like what you are watching on tv, you don’t complain about it, you just change channels or switch it off. for those who don’t like the R60 well then just focus on the R56 or what ever you like (SMART even…) MINI will be no different if they release the R60, Perhaps even better…

Its so ugly and so misshapen that its hard to think of a serious name. But…here goes

Mini Bloat
Bloat Mote
Mini Goat
Minipede
Moxie Maxi Mini
Mini Quadruped
Mini Rodan (of Japanese movie fame)
Mini Jong il (in “honor” of that N. Korean dictator)
Mini Goliath
Mini Abrams

Did you people buy a car or did you buy the marketing of a brand label? Too many people are trying to proclaim self identity through brand labels and especially thier cars.
I bought a car for the qualities it had. I dont care about brand image other than the percieved quality/value by the consumer on the resale market.

The fact is that an suv will appeal to a broader range of consumers than any previous MINI has. Four doors in a slightly higher profile is practical. epecially for small families. Products like the RAV4 have become bloated and are no longer small and as economical as they once were. The R60 I would expect will be the smallest and one of the most effecient on the market, making it a great product in a niche of bloated beasts.

@Mark: Yeah some of these comments are pretty worthless and a few are embarrassing to both the people that make then and the site in general. That said MINI has made a name for itself by being irreverent and thumbing it’s nose at vehicles that live by certain principles. That has both attracted and bred similar views by some of the brands most diehard supporters.

Based on that I don’t think it should shock anyone (let alone anyone at MINI) that a number of their most fervent fans will have seriously ideological issues with this new crossover.

Some have suggested the X-1 (in jest I’m sure) but a simple variation would keep it in line with BMW’s SUV’s: the MINI-X.
I don’t like the Moke, it sounds odd and I never saw any of them in the US. If they use the MINI Carlo (as suggested above) they’ll have to pay me royalties ;-)

Gabe I have to agree with a lot that you and Mark have said, I am sure some of my commentary is less than stellar.

My only point is that the fervent Mini fanatics out there is pretty widely split on this development. Something that I think could have some effect on the brand. I also think fervent Mini owners have sold more Mini’s than the total of advisers at all the dealerships combined. This is something that Mini’s decision has put at risk, no doubt there will be plenty owners still talking up the brand but there will be others that likely will never get past the R60.

Btw kinda like Owen’s name to: Mini Adventure

I don’t know what name they should tag on the vehicle; that’s why BMW/MINI uses focus/sample groups. I do appreciate this site giving an opportunity to it’s readers to have some input to this naming process. However; wry witless comments don’t make for informative or entertaining reading for anyone except the writer. An occasional “shot across the bow”, is one thing but come on; the relentless punishment this vehicle seems to be getting really is unwarranted. I’m certainly no fan of it but I don’t think it deserves all this..

How about the MINI Backlash, a subtle throwback to the days that MINI scoffed at the SUV concept? Rumor has it Stephen Colbert is asking all of his viewers to vote for the MINI Colbert (silent T).

MINI SUMO
MINI Comet
MINI Monster
MINI Mischief
MINI ST B. (Saint Bernard – like the rescue dogs of the alps)
MINI Mission
MINI Meister
MINI Bazzooka

It seems like all the good small but trucky names are already taken, so perhaps to honor the segment of the Mini community that has turned out here with such great suggestions, maybe Mini should name it something that reflects these faithful fans. How about the Mini Bug Eyed Spite? Ehh, the brits have done that, huh. The Mini Venom? Too Shelbyish Viperish, nope. The Mini Troll – yeah, small, tough, mountainish, petty? That really captures it I think, and does the faithful proud.

Delete the Moke name and I like it Dede, bloated indeed

Mini Cooper xDrive2.0si

Guys don’t get me wrong, I believe this will be a decent car. I just think it has the very real chance of doing more damage to the brand image then just about anything else Mini could have done. I also don’t blame Mini as the main problem here, BMW is genetically unable not design SUVs. At a time when more of the market is talking about cost out comes what will be the most expensive Mini of them all. I also will bet that a huge number of people looking for a small SUV are likely to go after the X1 since it will seat five. Throw what is likely to be a similar price point issue that exists between the 1 Series and the JCW and it further muddies the picture.

I’m with JonPD practically word for word, except that I doubt that it will truly have an enormous impact. If the car is succesful at all [self-sensoring snide remark here…], it is very likely to attract a very different audience, that really has no interest in attending club meetings and the like. What continues to be amazingly ironic, btw, is the similarities between the current goings-on and all the hubbub among classic Mini drivers when the new Mini was first getting attention… We lived, and quite a lot (like me) grew fond of the car.

What triggered me to respond is the suggestion to use the name “Moke”. As the car looks to be now, I think that’s a much worse idea than reusing the name “Clubman”, which at least had some kind of connection to the original through the original Clubman Estate (unless you count “offroadiness”, which, ironically, the original Moke never really had, unless you count the one or two twin-engined Mokes built – regardless, their 10″ wheels were still too small). The Moke is a minimalistic car, with a big emphasis on FUN (at least in the end, much like the Mini itself wasn’t originally meant as a driver’s car). It isn’t really practical for anything at all, except having fun driving it. Had a laugh about the Mini marketing people taking a convertible through a car wash? Moke drivers thought of it six years ago. That’s what the Moke name is about and it couldn’t be farther from the idea of a luxury SUV.

And I vote that MINI builds a micro car for JonPD and C4 and all the other whiners who detest anything ” outside the box” and call it the Little Bitch.

Odd that expressing concern for something that you like is considered whining. While all of us should not hesitate to express your view, I personally believe debate is good for the brand. I would bet you that if you set through the development of any product you would have intense debate going on to develop the best and cost effective product possible.

Think bashing each other because of their personal vies is both petty and shallow. I would hope that everybody realizes that each of us shares a common connection of being fans of the brand. I am not worried about being called names or people bashing my view I just have little patience for personal attacks.

I came here to suggest the Zombie, since that’s all I can see when I look at the concept pictures. However, I think the MINI X or someone’s suggestion of MINI Rover would be appropriate.

You have no idea what an “attack” would read like. I was being gentle.

Whiner could be defined as: someone who whines. You have certainly done your share with regard to the R60.

We are all aware of your view (opinion) and your position on how this is “dividing” the community. I like MINI as well as anyone, and God knows I love a good debate. But, your incessant bashing of a model that is designed to meet the needs of someone other than yourself, and provide a platform for growth of the brand, is wearing me out. If the R60 destroys MINI, well then, MINI wasn’t very sound. If someone driving any other model decides to snub me because I am driving a (gasp) SUV that bears the MINI badge, they can go screw. I could care less. What is “best” is really subjective. “Cost effectiveness” can also take on many meanings, depending on who is effected. I purchased an R53 for nearly $28,000 in 2006. I couldn’t even take my family out for ice cream in that car. Do you call that cost effective? Did I care when I wrote the check? NO! Did I enjoy the car anyway? You bet! The point is, don’t try to back-peddle and attempt to speak intelligently when you are really just trying to force your opinion on everyone else for the 10,000th time.

You are right about one thing. Bashing each other is petty. I apologize for coming at you. And I can assure you I am not shallow. In fact, I have the capacity to see the positives and the negatives and respect everyone else for driving the car of their choice, including you. However, I wish you would put a lid on your negative commentary, because we already know how you feel.

RE: the name MOKE- If MINI wants to produce a bare-bones utility vehicle with a removable top, removable doors and little else and name it MOKE, I’ll buy one of those too!

I think a more interesting question is whether or not the R60 will carry the Cooper/Cooper S designations on the hatch!

I recall that the amount of invective and vitriol in the comments regarding possible names for the blasphemy that was the impending production of the R55 was only slightly less than we are seeing for the R60. However, in some ways, that discussion was rendered moot when BMW/MINI chose not to include Clubman on the exterior of the car (since a follow driver without an intimate knowledge of the brand has NO IDEA what the car is called). Consequently, it is entirely possible that history will repeat itself and much animus will have been wasted unnecessarily.

I would suggest “FUNFZIG”. The R60 is coming out on the 50th Anniversary of MINI and it probably wouldn’t have made it without BMW. We can give the name a little German flair. The name has FUN and MINI already uses ZIG,ZAG, ZUG. FUNFZIG sounds better than FIFTY at least in English.

MINIme. Don’t worry…BMW global sales down 90% last year (Carapolypse anyone?)….Quite frankly I don’t see much future for a $35K-$40K bloated “MINI” SUV wanna be in this dismal market.

MINI waited too long to bring it to market. Now the same market will kill it even before the first one comes out the assembly line..

I could only wish C4, the fact though is Mini has thrown so much money at this they are likely at a tipping point where they will have to produce the product. I think BMW/MINI actually thinks this car is also their saving grace to get higher sales numbers so doubt we will see it pulled. Even if so its likely to be the first product once the economy starts recovering.

JonPD, C4 – please keep in mind that we’ve heard your point many many times. We understand and respect it. However it’s not always necessary to remind us every single day in every single post.

1). Metal Slug (Its big and ugly, like the tank in the SNK video game of the same name)

2). GrandMA (Its big, bloated, not attractive, and stinky like a grandma.. but your not going to tell her that because its not respectful.)

3). Sushi Scheiße! (theres nothing pretty about sushi and fish is smelly so why would you want holders for it in your car???? What are they thinking?)

I know for a fact that I’m not the target demographic for this car. I don’t even know who is, I hope they do.

Crossman (but isn’t there an issue with that name?)

Mutt (seriously)

I think Mutt would be a great name for this. It really is a mutt. We can’t say it is a purebred bulldog, right?

Think of the fun! I gotta take the Mutt out for a walk (trans: I need to take a drive). I gotta feed the Mutt (trans: I need gas.) The Mutt needs some grooming or the Mutt needs a bath (trans: obvi). The Mutt behaved badly (trans: up to you). The Mutt’s gotta go the vet (trans: something broke–which, unfortunately, it likely to happen).

Great post Gabe, I agree. I wonder what their bumper stickers say? What ever they say it says more about them.

Moke, But very few would get it as evidenced here by the crowd of haters.

“Oh and bonus points if you actually aren’t sarcastic on this one!”

I was going to go with Mini’s Big Mistake.

Ugly Pug. or SNAFU

I still stick by my original suggestion: “Subaru Forester”, if it’s not already been taken….

I really like the MINI Carlo.

The MINI Monte

I suggest the Mini Target… Afterall, it’s been quite the target for invictive and drivel! ;)

Matt

MINI Puke.

it is not a MINI :-(

What’s happened to the commenting on this site? Honestly Gabe, I don’t know why you bother anymore. The general tone of negativity is disheartening to say the least.

Here here, Mark!

MINI ‘Sclade…

In honor of the Caddy getting better gas mileage.

If you don’t like the R60 hold up your hands! Now it will be quite in here.

Mini Phoenix
Mini Phoenix S!!!

Mini-G

To keep this comment on track with the topic I suggest they name it the Mini Cooper Rover.

I am really tired of everyone getting off topic. The topic is what should Mini call the Cross over vehicle, not why you think it will hurt the brand or you think it is ugly. Come on people, keep it productive!

MINI CrossMan, or simply MINI XMAN

Why bother calling it a MINI at all?

May as well just be a BMW X1

jesus christ we have a bunch on whiners on here…

who cares if they release the R60 ? they need to expand their product line in order to make a profit, im sure we are all mature enough to know how this works…

if you don’t like the R60… well why dont you just whine about it on various websites or forums… ohh wait…

lets try that again.

if you don’t like the R60… how about you just let it be ? if you don’t like what you are watching on tv, you don’t complain about it, you just change channels or switch it off. for those who don’t like the R60 well then just focus on the R56 or what ever you like (SMART even…) MINI will be no different if they release the R60, Perhaps even better…

How about ‘MINI Adventure’?

How about the MINI Driver? Oh wait, that’s an actress.

Its so ugly and so misshapen that its hard to think of a serious name. But…here goes

Mini Bloat
Bloat Mote
Mini Goat
Minipede
Moxie Maxi Mini
Mini Quadruped
Mini Rodan (of Japanese movie fame)
Mini Jong il (in “honor” of that N. Korean dictator)
Mini Goliath
Mini Abrams

How about the MINI Mighty?

How about the MINI Iwillbuyone

Some suggestions:

VENTURE / VENTRA / VERSA

ALL-ROUNDER

PROFILE

REBEL

NAVIGATOR

FLEX

Gabe I have to agree with a lot that you and Mark have said, I am sure some of my commentary is less than stellar.

My only point is that the fervent Mini fanatics out there is pretty widely split on this development. Something that I think could have some effect on the brand. I also think fervent Mini owners have sold more Mini’s than the total of advisers at all the dealerships combined. This is something that Mini’s decision has put at risk, no doubt there will be plenty owners still talking up the brand but there will be others that likely will never get past the R60.

Btw kinda like Owen’s name to: Mini Adventure

Also:

JOURNEY

CONTENDER

TRANSFORMER

Final thoughts for tonight:

SEEKER

CHALLENGE

ADVANCE

LIBERTY (However this has been taken by Subaru?)

How about the MINI Shock?

Main Entry: shock
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: Something that jars the mind or emotions

It has definitely jarred some emotions here.

MINI SUMO
MINI Comet
MINI Monster
MINI Mischief
MINI ST B. (Saint Bernard – like the rescue dogs of the alps)
MINI Mission
MINI Meister
MINI Bazzooka

MINI Thteroid (think about it :-)

the MX (for the two wheel drive version)

the MX4 (for the all wheel drive version)

simple, clean and to the point. I want credit in the form of a new MINI if this is the name chosen ;)

Some more possible suggestions in light of the global recession:

ESCAPE (or XCAPE)

BREAKFREE

PLUS

EXTRA (or XTRA)

…i have made this point and i’ll make it again…

…9 INCHES LONGER THAN A CRX!!!!

…this is not a big car…it…is…still…small…

…it has four doors, it has four real seats, it is all-wheel drive, and it will most likely have a diesel option…

…i’ll call it MINE…

…and it will make out with my r53 in the garage because there will be nothing but mini-love…

…but i digress…

…my vote would be for Traveller or Rover or Scout…

MINI MULTI? As in multipurpose.
MINI-4?
MINI MUV (MINI Utility Vehicle)

I like scout but I thought International owns that one in the US at least.

http://images.wisconsinhistory.org/700003050087/0305001607-l.jpg

Whew! Did you look at that – never thought of the Scout as a preppy truck, but whatever..

And I’m surprised nobody has evoked the Canyonero yet?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8hDUaik7A4

It seems like all the good small but trucky names are already taken, so perhaps to honor the segment of the Mini community that has turned out here with such great suggestions, maybe Mini should name it something that reflects these faithful fans. How about the Mini Bug Eyed Spite? Ehh, the brits have done that, huh. The Mini Venom? Too Shelbyish Viperish, nope. The Mini Troll – yeah, small, tough, mountainish, petty? That really captures it I think, and does the faithful proud.

This is easy..

It’s the MINI Sport Utility Cross-over (X-over).

Also known at he MINI SUX.

Everything to all people….. what a great goal. Don’t defend it, they are no better than the lunkheads at other failing auto companies.

cheers,
jeffro

How about the MINI Backlash

+1 Thats my vote!

I’ll go with the new BMW bloated nomenclature:

Mini Cooper Moke xDrive2.0si

Grossman.

Mini Rally X

MINImum (I can’t believe no one wrote this)

Mistake is my personal favorite

The MINI SPORTSMAN is my nomination.

And I vote that MINI builds a micro car for JonPD and C4 and all the other whiners who detest anything ” outside the box” and call it the Little Bitch.

suppose the name will be free soon:

MINI hummer

Heh MINIme,

@JonPD. http://actingschmacting.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/broken-record.jpg

A consistent point of view isn’t any better or worse with the I love it or I hate it crowd.

Back to topic, still favorites so far are Mini X and Mini 4X

MINI Crossman ftw

Dearest JonPD,

Have a pleasant evening.

@hal:

You missed the sarcasm in the name…..

So: To Cooper, or not to Cooper? Fight!

I would suggest “FUNFZIG”. The R60 is coming out on the 50th Anniversary of MINI and it probably wouldn’t have made it without BMW. We can give the name a little German flair. The name has FUN and MINI already uses ZIG,ZAG, ZUG. FUNFZIG sounds better than FIFTY at least in English.

you heard it here first

MINI XyLo

^Mini Troll!

JonPD, C4 – please keep in mind that we’ve heard your point many many times. We understand and respect it. However it’s not always necessary to remind us every single day in every single post.

That’s all.

Sorry Gabe,

I will temper my commentary, the R60 is just a huge lighting rod.

After looking at awhile I guess the fact it looks like of beefed up Mini, I thing it should be called the “Mini Might”!

How about the MINI SAFARI!

How about the “MINI MOTO CROSS”

How about the “GRAND-MINI” OR MINI “G”

Oh Lavardera…. Don’t get me started…

I like the Carlo,
Monte,
Waaahhhbulance for sure. Get a life fellas.
Maxa To salute a great member of the community available in Rubber Duck Yellow

How about the Kipper in honor of a great poster who gets it?

Or Chipper! Yeah that sounds MINI’ish

MINI Clubman Allroad sounds good
MINI Adventure is good too

People When are you going to learn, Just don’t read JonPuD’s and C4’s comments. They really are downers. Don’t you guys realize that they are really 12 year olds pretending to be adults?

If I can get the scratch for this, I’ll buy it.

I’d go for ‘MINI Stranger’ or ‘MINI Scrambler’.

Thank you for the excellent article. Best thing I read all day. Look forward to reading more from you in the future
