There has been a lot of talk lately about the new MINI Connected system and how it ties your smart phone into your MINI in a really intelligent way. What we haven’t spent much time on, however, is the updated Nav in the 2011 MINI lineup. In this video, we get a great walkthrough of its basic functions and features.

I do hope you can enter a destination by voice, and have voice commands for many of those display options too.

I think it looks more like a “normal” GPS now, but I wonder why they insist on creating their own standards for the map colors when it seems that almost every other system adheres to a nearly standard interface palette. My experience is that these color schemes follow the standards used in printed maps, but Mini, not so much. Can you change the color schemes? Many GPS units let you do that.

It looks like a cool system but still too $$$$

I agree with lavardera but I am happy that MINI finally got away from the BLACK color scheme at least. I have an ’09 JCW and the Nav colors are pathetic. Maybe OK for a night mode, but NOT for day mode. I previously had an ’04 MCS and the Nav colors were just fine. Why screw it up with the color scheme change. Can’t MINI come up with the same new color scheme as the 2011 with the next map update? My only dislike with my JCW.

Doesn’t look that much different than the current NAV, honestly. In the video, however, it was much snappier when the narrator would make a selection vs. the second or two delay in my ’07MCS’s NAV.

@Neal:
The video has a caption that says some elements were sped up so not too sure if it’s actually faster.

As much as having an in dash nav system would be nice the input remains clunky and the display remains outdatted. I bought a nuvi 3790 which is by the looks of it far superior in input and display. Installed a kuda mount and hardwired to the fuse box. A bit of work but it looks pretty claen and it was a quarter of the price for superior navigation.

Personally I would choose to get Nav, but not for only the navigation function. It also gives you so much better integration with other functions such as stereo, iPod, as well as MINI Connected (I want Internet radio). Just one example is the audio controls.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjTbzduDg0sPeople keep bringing up that the factory GPS navigation doesn’t work as well as some handheld units. However choosing the Nav option is not just about the actual navigation function alone.

Last but not least, I don’t like the look of the huge standard speedometer.
