Here's some news from AutoExpress on the upcoming MINI facelift scheduled for the '05 model year.
“The MINI is all set to get a facelift, Auto Express can exclusively reveal. However, as with some of the celebrities who drive the popular little car, it appears BMW is keen to keep the forthcoming cosmetic surgery under wraps.
We heard about the changes, which will coincide with the launch of the MINI cabriolet next year, through our industry sources. The idea is to keep the car looking fresh – but when we called the German manufacturer to find out more, it refused to comment.
A representative told us bluntly: “We are not prepared to discuss the matter, because there is nothing happening this year.” However, we have learned that the modifications will appear at the same time as the unveiling of the soft-topped MINI Open, scheduled to be at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
Exact details are still secret, but exterior changes are expected to include a reworked front end with a new grille. Inside, the current instruments are tipped to be replaced by chronometer-style gauges, similar to those used in the Lexus IS300. This indicates that the rev counter could become a separate dial inside the speedo.”
This news seems to corroborate earlier reports of a facelift for the '05 model year I've seen for months now. Further from what a source told me we should expect more than just an exterior reworking. Look for some real changes to the console area in an attempt to create more usable space for storage and finally, just for us Americans, real cup holders.

Great Site – Perfect for daily consuption. Been reading for a couple weeks.

It's funny, my 2004 MCS comes in a month. I wonder how drastic the changes will be… Could it include Fender Flare painting as part of the update? Pretty cool stuff. I am really starting to love these cars.

Getting rid of GTI 337 for it, wish I could wait a year.

I don't understand why they would change a thing other than maybe fit and finish. The car is a winner as is!

It looked like the pics taken of the Cab where in maybe Palm Springs area.

RB

Any idea if these changes will be retrofitable to the current MCS? When can we expect to see these new changes? I love the car, but the dash makes the car feel cheep, it looks nice, but is just crappy plastic. I'm happy to see this change. Apparently, Mini has been listening to the message boards.

Also, I'm gettin ready to order my Mini and am wondering whether you would suggest the Leather or Leatherette (Viny) interior?

Josh – I have no idea about the changes being retro-fitable (is that a word?) but I would doubt it.

In regards to seating I would highly recommend leatherette personally.

CC – The exterior changes will be to the front and possibly even to the lower rear portion of the car.

I doubt they will be very drastic – just some nips and tucks here and there to keep it new and fresh.

Paul Mullett over at MINI2 recently looked into his exceptionally accurate crystal ball and saw an LSD (limited slip differential) as an option for the Cooper S beginning in January 2005. That's an exceedingly welcome change and will substantially raise the bar on the MCS's performance.

LSD is a must have.
Hopefully a robust <a href=http://www.quaifeusa.com/">Quaife, and
not something that needs to be reuilt twice a year.

i hope we'll have some hints from the car show circuit in 2004, i should finally have enough money saved to replace my car by then! b.t.w. it's very sad to see my car on gabe's front page

Sorry to constantly remind you of it.

I'm scared.. I hope the changes are not along the lines of the 3 spoke wheel.. And the Speedo/Tach thing really has me worried… I'm not a fan at all of the chronograph style gages, and in the MINI, it would look totally out of place. I do like the idea of a LSD for the MCS though.. that sort of thing is the way they should go (improving upon the MINI, not throwing out things to start anew..)

I'm still hoping to see a MINI in the WRC…

I am so happy I will be picking up my MCS by the end of the month! It means I'll have the new MINI, as it was designed to look!

I love WRC but can't imagine the Mini, as configured, competing against what they have competing now. Way too short.

But hey if they need a test driver my hands up!

Pebbles…….HUH?
