This news will be significant for those of you out there that have had to deal with the dreaded stumble or power surge that some MINIs are affected with. According to a couple dealers Software Update 36 (or whatever it's eventually called) should be out by late November. The update supposedly eliminates the stumble and greatly reduces the power surge. You can read more about it in this post by someone who has already had the pre-release update directly from MINI: The Cooper S Stumble Fixed.

Does anybody know if the 2004s being delivered now have this software version?
Or will all these new Minis have to be updated.

It's too bad MINI can't get their story straight about this one. MINI USA tells me to talk w/ my dealer, my dealer told me about a month ago they expect it out soon. About two weeks ago they switched their story to say it'll be out in two weeks (i.e. now). Now we're hearing late November?

I wouldn't trust dealers to know about these issues as they really aren't in the know 99% of the time with this stuff. MINIUSA corporate has always said the fix will be out by December of this year and it looks like it'll even arrive a little early.

I've heard the current 2004 cars do not have any of these issues.

Gabe, I heard December at one point also, but it wasn't through either MINI USA (i.e. the 800#) or my dealer. I heard it through the forums. Who is MINI's spokespeople if not their dealers or MINI USA? You have to take all the forum stuff w/ a grain of salt, it would be nice to get a straight answer without having to have an inside source at MINI corporate.

Now, that being said, I did get a call from JD Powers last night. They asked me about just this issue (stumble) since I had mentioned it on my customer satisfaction survey. They concluded gathering more information on the problem by asking if I would mind having a MINI engineer contact me. I said absolutely not, I would love it!

cheers,
Mark

P.S. – I don't mean to sound mad at you, just frustrated at them. Love the site.

Hey no problem man – this issue is frustrating to me as well! I have an '02 Cooper and have had the stumble happen from time to time (with the DCS turned off mind you). But I really think that MINI is trying hard to eliminate this issue.

Let us know if you talk to an engineer and what info he/she gives you. I'd love to post more about this.

Nothing quite like ASK-MINI is there?

Me: “Do you know when software version 36 will be released?”

MINI Guy: “Soft…ware?”

Me: “Yeah, the stuff they load onto the ECU. The main operating software?”

MINI Guy: “I'm sorry, sir, this isn't a technical line. You should probably call a dealer…”

Just had my “03” updated for poor cold start yesterday. So far it seems better. Knauz is my dealer.
