Since MotoringFile broke the story on the official news of the forthcoming MCS automatic transmission option last May there have been lots of emails and comments wanting to know more details. While many of these details have been available within specific articles we thought it best to create a piece that would be a place to go for all pertinent info regarding this option.

Here's what we know. As of January 1st, 2005 the Cooper S will available with an automatic transmission as an option. The transmission will be equipped “steptronic paddles” along with a standard automatic gear lever. It will be option code 205 (for the transmission) and 202 (for the steering w/paddles). They won't be available separately. And finally… it'll be have six forward gears. All this information is based off of MINIUSA documents.

Here's what we've heard. We are fairly certain that the transmission will be manufactured by Aisin… the same company that makes the transmission for both the VW Toureg and the new Porsche 911. We've been told by someone (who's seen a photo of the steering wheel) that the paddles will resemble those found in the Z4 equipped with SMG. But don't get your hopes up… this will not be an SMG style transmission – it will simply be an automatic with manual controls.

The only big question we don't have answer for is how much it will cost. If I had to pick a range, I'd say it'll most likely be close to what the CVT on the Cooper currently costs.
